Another thing that could be interesting to question: Even if the yew tree was changed to be p2p only (ultimately it's up to Jagex to decide, but if it 'survives' the tier rebalance for the related skills initially due to a potential oversight, it should remain f2p forever), its logs - and magic logs - would continue to be available as drops (unless they're replaced by something else like they did with herbs, ores, bars and metal equipment in the past). By definition free players should be able to continue burning them, since they both are rewards from f2p content and it otherwise would affect their possible experience rates - or should they be reduced to pure commodity (or something to keep for a potential membership). I'm warming up to the idea of yew trees going P2P. When fletchable bows are re-tiered to match the new Woodcutting requirements, that will require introducing bows crafted from teak, acadia, and mahogany. As maple bows will be raised to level 40, they'll be on par with the historical ceiling for F2P equipment and only one tier below the typical modern standard. I don't see why acadia trees couldn't be introduced around Al Kharid, Het's Oasis, the Garden of Kharid, and the Mage Training Arena, bringing F2P-harvestable Woodcutting resources up to a respectable level 50. Similarly, teak trees can be added in suitable locations to fill the vacuum at level 30, while more maple trees can also be introduced to make them more convenient to chop (not to mention eliminate the needless Dungeoneering requirement). In order to ensure existing Woodcutting spots would retain their value on F2P worlds, here are some proposed changes to trees in F2P areas:

Al Kharid
-Add acadia trees around the small oasis north of the city gates
-Add acadia trees to the Garden of Kharid and in spaces north of Het's Oasis

Mage Training Arena
-Add teak and acadia trees to complement the magic trees

Lumbridge
-Replace the lone yew tree behind the church with a grove of teak trees, as it's near a warm, tropical-esque estuary
-Add maple trees to join the yew trees west of the market

Varrock
-Add maple trees south and northeast of the city, interspersed with the yews
-Add maple trees at Varrock Palace, to complement the yews
-Replace the lone yew tree by the museum with a maple grove

Edgeville
-Add maple trees among the yews in the ruins

Falador
-Add maple trees south of the city, to complement the yews and elder
-Replace the willows along the coast east of the city (near the Crafting Guild and Dark Wizard's Tower) with teak trees

Port Sarim
-Add maple trees alongside the yews by the path to the north
-Replace the willows along the coast to the southwest with teaks

Rimmington
-Add teak trees throughout the area, to complement the yews and elder

Chopping a yew log and burning a yew log are two requirements to earn the Explorer's Ring 4.

If free players lost access to yew trees, and yews aren't replaced with a lower-tiered tree for those hard achievements, F2P would be blocked from obtaining the Explorer's Ring 4.

That would not be a QoL update for free players, no matter how you want to spin it.

I get what your saying about the T50 "cut-off", Rikornak, but this is more of a guideline than a hard rule.

Agreed.

Access to the Mining Guild requires level 60 Mining, while access to the Dungeoneering resource dungeon in Al Kharid requires level 75 Dungeoneering, Will members also advocate to make these areas P2P-exclusive since they both include member content?

Original message details are unavailable.
Some rebalancing may be in order. Generally speaking, it will not be the worst thing for RuneScape if free players are allowed access to a little bit of higher-end content, provided they have the skill levels, of course.

I remember when 85 Mining was needed to mine runite ores. Hell, 70 Mining was needed for Adamantite ores. So no, level 70 Woodcutting is not some outrageous goal for F2P to reach.

Historically, we F2P have had a small minority of higher-level content to look forward to, and to work towards. Yet entitled members seem to always want F2P to have less and less content to enjoy. Why should we not have a few nice things?

@Seasons Past - That certainly are some great suggestions. I would prefer to keep things nice and simple currently (alone for the amount of space I got available for suggestions), but I do think free players should have one or two clusters of maple trees, that aren't locked behind secondary requirements. They have added acadia, teak and mahogany in some additional spots for members for the very same reason after all. So all in all I'll suggest two clusters for teak, maple and acadia each.

/edit: Also suggested adding a deposit box to the daemonheim resource dungeon, in order to elevate it to the best option due to its increased requirements.

@Shaydesshadow - You made a point with that achievement diary requirement - albeit you already got punished by needing 70 instead of 60 woodcutting now - and expect the same to happen with firemaking eventually. But let's be real, they quickly came up with 4 new comparable tasks when the lumber yard was removed in favour of fort forinthry a few months ago, so I hardly expect they would lock you out of your diary reward for too long (if at all). And if it's just changing both tasks to acadia.

Otherwise - feel free to read my thoughts for that on the last couple of pages - especially in regard of pseudo post level 50 things. I won't repeat for you why none of the old metals and logs were even remotely what you might think they are, just because of that random level requirement to gather or process them they slapped onto them back in 2001.

I will not actively advocate removing access to yew trees - solely for the reason the game allows free players to do a lot of things, that does not directly fulfill purpose for them with the exception of preparing something for future membership or outright creating commodity members can process further - just don't expect I'll suggest re-adding them afterwards if their removal happens.

And yeah - I literally suggested access to that al kharid dungeon back then myself. Not because I thought it would be an ideal solution (and we had had discussions due to its level back then in here), but it was the easiest way to give free players access to semi precious gems (instead of adding them somewhere else) for that fancy new silver jewellery they added shortly before. Not even remotely needed nowadays, since they extended the burthope mine a few years later - which certainly was more elegant. Does it need to removed because of this - nope. It's not like it would tease you something you can't reasonably use anyway - while you just can't mine the ores or catch the implings in there - the gems still are available to you.

I'm all in favor of what I think of as "F2P endgame" content. As an example, I remember t40/50 fish being suggested as an addition to Het's Oasis, so that F2P players would be able to utilize the area and have higher-level Fishing content to work towards.

While a lot of people are entitled and also enabled by social media, in practice the F2P game has been expanded over the years, very much in spite of the idiots who want to shut down F2P and force all new players to leave and not even join in the first place. Fletching used to be P2P but was opened to F2P a few years ago (back when Mod Osborne was lead designer);

(As an aside, the irl resource cost to sustain supremely stupid technologies like AI and social media is laughably unsustainable. The social media morons' "culture" will wipe itself out within our natural lifespan.)

I don't think level 70 is at all an unreasonable goal for F2P to reach. On my first account, I remember getting my highest stat up to the 80s before I finally got membership. Coincidentally, that skill happened to be Woodcutting, which was a reasonable money-maker back then.

One thing to note is that F2P can't use the orichalcite rocks within the Mining Guild, even though those who enter the guild meet the level requirement. There are similar cases for other resources - such as drakolith, necrite, and banite rocks, all of which can be found in the Wilderness (which has been nearly fully opened to F2P).

The mining guild also was such a thing... yep, it needed 60 mining to unlock. But do you know what was in there? Coal. By definition something you could start mining from 30 onwards elsewhere. And not even a good spot for that one. That level 60 thing felt really rewarding. I think I literally entered it once and never again before they've added resource dungeons - which gave it some reason to exist featuring the sole f2p runite rock not located in the wilderness.

OS made it better by adding an hidden mining bonus, a plethoria of other ores and a bank chest (p2p section my bad), as well as a p2p exclusive expansion with some features exclusive to the guild. RS3 made it better by adding the selection of ores it features today - albeit it obviously is more useful for members than it would be for free players.
