Original message details are unavailable.
I think Ale refresh should be included here but expanded or all ales in a separate thread. But good catch and good idea.
I only listed the ales I think need improvement. Greenman's ale and axeman's folly are already in a good place in my opinion.

I didn't touch the ones that can't be brewed, with the exception of ranger's aid. That one can be merged with cider, which would make the Ranged ale brewable. Asgarnian ale boosts Strength and wizard's mind bomb Magic, both of which can be brewed.

@Seasons Past.

I do think construction should be left as is, with no additional content yet. Making the teaser content all P2P would cause a lot of backlash, and Mod Stu (a senior developer) was lucky to give POH and construction as a teaser.

Here is a little bit of history. It would be like with Canifis gloves problem in 2004. Gloves are available for F2P for a month when released. When Jagex realized it was a bug, they immediately caused the colored item to be P2P. There was a lot of backlash and a lot of players, including members, and at that time, the users of the Jagex messaging system were complaining and ranting to Jagex. So a week later, Jagex retracted their decision to make gloves F2P. Currently, in regular runescape, the glove has no value for armor.

Back then in RS2, f2p updates were rare to get.

Anyway, a combat update is coming soon. It looks like they're only buffing the offense skills (namely attack, strength, range, and magic). Ever since necromancy was added, a lot of enemies had their stats adjusted, mostly with higher HP. Hopefully, the buff will actually be good enough to battle enemies. Next, after beta, I hope Jagex will buff defense.

I'd like to address all of the points you made about Construction exclusivity.

First, I acknowledge that there would be backlash to making the skill once again fully P2P.

Second, you've explained that making the Canifis gloves F2P brought no harm to the game, even though it was unintentional at first.

My own counterarguments:

Construction has always been an outlier. Until Dungeoneering, it was the only skill that couldn't be trained or even engaged with outside its own confined area. This severely limited its potential mechanically and content-wise.

Fort Forinthry finally fixed this restrictive situation by making Construction an integral part of the main game area. No longer is it mechanically severed from the rest of the game as it was prior to this year.

The purpose of a trial is just that - a trial. If something is demoed, it should serve as an enticing and fairly accurate representation of the larger whole. The implicit goal is to make a positive impression so that people will want to seek out more content on their own.

The Construction trial doesn't achieve that goal. Fort Forinthry has become what the POH always aspired to be but could not have been because of inherent design limitations. The purpose of a trial being what it is, what does the POH have to offer in the first 20, let alone 5, levels? Do the first 20 levels (without access to Fort Forinthry) provide a good impression of what Construction, much less the game, has to offer?

To be crystal clear - it is not the POH directly making the game worse off; it is the fact that F2P have access to something of very poor quality, which will dissuade them from playing.

Regarding the controversy aspect, popularity should not be used in exclusion as a gauge of whether something should or should not be done. It is relevant, because other people obviously are affected by changes, but should never be the deciding factor. What is best in the long term is not always popular, and vice versa.

While I am aware of and appreciate Mod Stu's efforts in developing the POH tutorial, I do not believe that it is in the interest of the game for new players to be shown that content. The POH lacks appeal for a modern audience and makes a poor impression of the game. That is not what we want as players, nor what the developers intend.

I have always felt that the 5-level trial for members' skills was a mistake. 5 levels is just enough to showcase the most bare, basic, and repetitive mechanics, only to abruptly cut off access. The message this sends is: We don't want you to continue playing.

@Seasons Past,

I understand your point of view. I appreciate your explaining things.

I do not think a developer made a mistake in making the POH teaser. It is not one man's decision on the Runescape team. This was obviously a team, a director, and more likely a higher-up's decision. As someone who knows about technology, software, and designing. Sometimes cases can be easy to change, but it usually takes time to change or could be difficult at times. In terms of adding, modifying, or removing things, it takes time, cost, and resources to develop content. Another reason to change content is if consumer feedback is huge, worth the effort, or a business decision. All we can do is guess, but we do not know what the team was planning at the time in the past or now.

However, developer vision is not always consistent; the past, present, and future can have different views or policies that can change or affect the software.

Back on topic, I was not referring to popularity in the previous post, implying the time length for the POH teaser. If this had happened within 3-5 months, it could have been easier to reverse the changes based on feedback or balancing. But like I said, development to change contents takes resources, feedback, time, and money. Construction is out to f2p upto level 5 for 5 years.

Anyways I keep it aside for now and leave it alone. I hope this enlighten you with information.

I agree that up to level 5 is not suitable for a teaser for mostly P2P skills.
