I recall the day the newspost about it came out. When reading it, I was like "really a finale?". I see that as one of the problems. This quest came across, to me at least, as someone suddenly saying lets wrap this up. This left to an unsatisfying conclusion and points like the slug prince where you could tell things had been changed.
Really this should have been a five part quest series. The first two are fine, kenneths concerns goes on a detour but the only problem with that is that they failed to tie it in properly. Salt in the wound just threw stuff out and it didn't stick.
It's a shame since an ancient evil rising to take control could be a terrific story if told right. If I was writing it taking over after Kenneths concerns, quest 4 would be researching a proper cure with the returned slug prince the boss ending with one of the group being controlled (I'm thinking kenneth) destroying the last bit of knowledge we need and possibly killing someone. Quest 5 would pick up with the bleak situation and explore the ramifications of being controlled until we finally stop the slugs. Both quests going into the events of the past invasions for background knowledge.
I do see dungeoneering here as force included. Whenever a new skill comes out, it doesn't seem fully formed. Several additions updates (expansions, quest inclusions, D&Ds, ect) seem needed to become fully fledging game features. I imagine it was a bit of "dungeoneerings just come out, resource dungeons and sagas are coming, lets add it in a quest".
