Yup! Just remove the last quest, put the dungeoneering reward in the dungeoneering reward shop (easiest solution, I don't even know if it is worth bothering with the experience rewards) and leave the town in a state of sea slugs controlling nearly everyone.

Then add a few hints here and there linking Mother Mallum to Xau-tak: which should be extremely easy considering how Mother Mallum rose from the ocean, which is often linked to Xau-Tak. Just add some lore books here and there (some hidden in Witchaven, others put in locations clearly linked to Xau-Tak). Something about Mother Mallum being one of Xau-Tak's minions, capable of acting on its own to further Xau-Tak's goals (even in the absence of Xau-Tak).

And then just leave it at that. Have the constant feeling of dread when you enter the town of Witchaven, as if you could get caught by a sea slug at any time. The idea of impending doom, yet without a clear way on how to stop it (I mean you would like this Mod Raven right? :P ).

I have to admit that I haven’t paid much attention to the lore pertaining to Xau-Tak, so I won’t comment on whether it should be included in the Sea Slug quest series. However, I definitely agree with Big Storms that a subtle alternative to Salt in the Wound would be preferable to a direct replacement for the quest, not only because the former would be much more easily implemented but also because a degree of ambiguity would enhance the narrative of the series.

I was thinking: should I make a similar thread about Fate of the Gods or Missing, Presumed Death? Those are quests a lot of people seem to like to all the more reason to explain why (I think) they are pretty bad.

I would be interested in reading a critique of either quest. One major fault of Missing, Presumed Death is that it directly undermines the significance of actions meant to have been previously taken by the player.

During the closing stages of Ritual of the Mahjarrat, the player, with assistance, teleports the Stone of Jas to an unknown location in an effort to prevent subsequent misuse of the Stone. However, the plot of Missing, Presumed Death depends on the assertion that Sliske has gained possession of the Stone. This underlying condition acts as the central catalyst (no pun intended) for the events of Missing, Presumed Death, rendering what would have been one of the most consequential outcomes of Ritual of the Mahjarrat utterly meaningless.

Kinda burned out on Xau-Tak.
Wouldn't be stunned if reviving the Slug Queen and using her (and thru her, the ability to control lots of people) would make for a far more effective means of getting in that the path The Ambassador took.
But be nice to finish a quest series without some "divine intervention" be the cause of the problem.
Can't we just finish it off like we used to? Through good old fashioned shooting/blasting/smashing/stabbing it do death.
