So I may be committing several kinds of heresy here, but... I really do think I see and understand what Jagex was doing with SITW. They wanted to make a quest series that could be completed in its entirety by mid-level players. Which in my opinion is good, admirable even. Why should all storyline conclusions be locked behind high requirements, anyway? Throwing weaker players a bone is totally understandable, I think. And to do that, they had to make some sacrifices, like cutting the penguin connection for instance. Was this worth it? Maybe not, but I can at least see why it was done.

Thoughts.
I agree wholeheartedly with the idea of throwing low-mid level players the proverbial bone. I feel like there was just a better way to end it than with a Pillar.
Maybe have Mother Mallum weakened by something, making her vulnerable and weak, so that it becomes a mid-level boss?

Though about the pillar... might it be worth mentioning that in the original "Call of C*hulhu" the title character is defeated by a boat? Seriously.
Perhaps the pillar was dropped by Xau-Tak who got tired of Mallum's failures and wanted to replace her? It gets me thinking that it wanted Kennith to take over.

I do keep wondering if the slugs and Xau-Tak are related. Only similarities are invasions of multiple worlds and relation to the sea, but there could be something else there. That said Mod Wilson never worked on the slug series so I'm certain he didn't plan anything.

@Klap Trap: Such a premise would have been fine, really. But the quest is so inconsistent with its prequels that that isn't much of an excuse, unfortunately...

@Lord Drakan: There have been many blanks and holes left after Salt in the Wound, but they can be filled in. Jagex need to fill in these blanks, but they have to take their time over it and not rush. The best stories and works of art are done slowly and with deep thought.

There is space for a god to be involved, and I think that Kennith and Rabid Jack could be linked. Assuming that Kennith has a slug prince inside him which gave him powerful magic, control over the slugs (this could mean the slug inside him was the true master of the slugs ready to overthrow Mallum for its own ends), and allowed for fast growth from a small boy to a fully grown man in, say, a few months (this is the only way to explain the 'timeskip'), the prince could be the brain of the slugs.

As for Rabid Jack, we know he made off with a treasure chest and 'killed himself'. And there are sluglings being used to make Braindeath 'rum'. If Kennith has a slug prince or master slug inside him, Rabid Jack could have one as well, granting him control over the smaller slugs inside the 'rum'. This could mean that Jack is the key ingredient to raising the Underwater City as well as being the slugs' commander (and therefore Xau-Tak's lieutenant), while Kennith is destined to be the king, which is shown in Kennith's Concerns when he controlled the citizens of Witchaven to attack Kimberly. However, he does have control over this slug. He used this power to get revenge for losing his toy train, and develops a better personality while 'growing up' and commands more focused and better magic for fighting.

Even if they're not destined to lead together, this could actually lead to a fight between Kennith and Rabid Jack, assuming the slug series is going to tie in with the pirates.

This'd tie it in with the pirate series, though, which would lead to (grand)master level quests, which is exactly what they were trying to avoid. :P Still, interesting

Instead of going to (grand)master level, this is why I'd rather tie in the slug quests to the Elder Gods, particularly Bik. Her resting place of Entrana should be something the Temple Knights may be concerned with. I'm… surprised that Bik's element is the earth, though. Still, I try to hold up to how the poll that gave us Heart of Stone had the "Bik and the Oceans" option.

Plus, look at Bik's Elder Chronicles.

"From matter is born shape, ever growing and changing. The youth increases in knowledge and power. Thus came Edda-Bik."

"From Bik, the clay to shape, to build and destroy. Form and reform. The changing of states, of forms, of function."

Her aspect of time has been described as "alteration". Mah's role is to control potential and prevent the birth of mortal life. Mah failed in that, and has instead done the exact opposite, but Bik is right next in the sequence. If life is born, then why not put it to good use? So Mother Mallum and the sea slugs could be Bik's failsafe against Mah's absence, bringing mortals in line. While Bik might not completely change the form of humans, Mother Mallum can certainly change their form and function. In a way, Mother Mallum and the sea slugs could play a role similar to the TokHaar to Ful, or what the Dragonkin have been forced to do for Jas.

That's an interesting theory, but it wouldn't exactly explain why she is, well, you know... EVIL. :P After all, the slugs hop from world to world to conquer, like alien invaders.

Which is kind of unsettling...what do they do after successfully conquering a world? Perhaps a slug prince is born, who then grown into a slug king and remains behind to rule the planet of slug-controlled puppets while the Great Mother moves on... Oh gods that's creepy.

Maybe the slugs are just spawn of Xau-Tak.

I was thinking: should I make a similar thread about Fate of the Gods or Missing, Presumed Death? Those are quests a lot of people seem to like to all the more reason to explain why (I think) they are pretty bad. Bizarre Boron Fusswell, scryer extraordinaire.
