Listing the names is a terrible idea.

If someone knows a name they want, they'll go for it. Releasing a list just makes this more about who will be logged on at the time the list is released.

I agree with this so much. I feel like if someone really wants a particular name, they'll try it. Releasing giant lists seems to me like it would not be such a great idea.

I agree too, or atleast, one week after the names has been released, they could do the list of names remaining from the first batch.

This is ridiculous and completely bizarre, it's not fair to players who take long breaks from Runescape, it isn't justified, it's pointless. And using the excuse that players who want a certain name can't get one because a currently inactive player has it, is completely stupid. Take for example veteran or well known runescapers who haven't played for some time, what happens to their names? (The Old Nite, etc) this honestly just seems like another service implemented by jagex to squeeze as much money out of bonds as they possibly can. Correct me if I'm wrong but NO other online game has implemented such a bizarre and unfair service. That idea in the back of your head that your players name is not set in stone and can be used by other players is completely repulsive for me, look at the big picture Jagex, this is a pointless cleanup for an issue that hardly affects users, *type your username*, *sorry that username is in use* BIG DEAL find one that isn't it's been so for years.

The Old Nite is deceased and Jagex locked his account.

To answer your other statement. I am not sure at the stance of Jagex with mentioning other games in the forums, but I will point out one game I know and I have posted this before on the forums before this step about account names was taken. LOL has the automated system that contacts "summoners" via e-mail that their name will be automatically released after the given date, since they have not played a single game for a long time (usually a year since the last game they played) - which is much less compared to RuneScape. If they want to reclaim their name, they were given a time period (a month) to play one match, or the name will be available to other players.
In the e-mail, they also provided the major content/updates that have been added into the game during their absence - which is another opportunity to "re-advertise" the game.

And I'm sure it is NOT the only game that has that automated system, in fact I would be safe to say that RuneScape is FAR behind and this system should've been implemented years ago.

i do like the username cleanup but I got to agree with mong5676 he made that sound reasonable and it is pointless to clean up the accounts when most people take a break. if this gets released it will be sad that all the people will lose there names to some random people.

What are you talking about? It's just the name being taken from the inactive accounts, not taking the accounts themselves or deleting them. As with all accounts that have lost their names, they will be set to something like [#S123RFQW] and if they ever get on RS again, they will be prompted to get a new name.

I have mixed feelings about this. I have many friends that have gone inactive and I'd hate to see their "unique" name in-game only to find out it's not them. At the same time, though, I understand that the game evolves and people move on. But can you make exceptions to this "two year rule?" For example, someone who is maxed can keep their name? Or has a 200m stat? Their history shouldn't be in someone else's hands.

Anyway... Good luck everyone. :) But whatever you do, Jagex, DO NOT CREATE A LIST AND POST IT. LET PEOPLE FIGHT FOR THE NAMES THEY WANT.
