My smartphone costed me $50 and you can easily get a "pay as you GO" smartphone for like $1 or a contract phone for that I think. Smart phones aren't expensive and you can put this on a USB flash drive if you don't want a phone.

Why wouldn't you use your phone for the code, in staid of a computer? or is your phone really old? The device I use some times lets me multitask...

JAG is actually less secure than the new authenticator. With emails potentially being hijacked by professional phishers, accounts were still at jeopardy.

This new authenticator, however, uses 2 step authentication. In order for someone to hijack you, they would need to steal your cell phone in real life. This makes the chances of getting hijacked nearly impossible for someone with the authenticator.

Folks who had JAG without using an email with 2 step authentication were still easy phishing targets for hijackers, because gaining control of the email account would enable the hijacker to easily gain control of the account.

I'm trying to get my reward for the security stronghold, but since you replaced recovery questions with the runescape authenticator, I can't get it. So is it basically impossible to get the reward now?

I just started playing oldschool runescape again, and those money would be really helpful!

The only reason Jagex would do this is because they got some BIG money from Google, which is sad they are willing to make a lot of hassle for their PAYING members, I may have a smart phone but I don't install programs that ask for private data that I don't want anyone but myself to access, for instance in order to use the Authenticator on the phone, you need a barcode scanner, and in order to install a barcode scanner you have to agree to it, and in doing that you have agreed to what that app can access on your phone, as in, the app can access it without you knowing that it is! and right now in order to download it you have to agree to...

A) This app can view my information about activity on the device , which apps are running , BROWSING HISTORY and bookmarks.

B) Contacts/calendar- Uses one or more of: calendar, contact information.

C) Photos/media/ Files- uses one or more of: Videos, or audio, the devices external storage.

D) And it can view my Wi Fi connection information which allows app to view information about Wi Fi, such as whether Wi-Fi is enabled and names of connected devices.

So in a summary this app can see, what apps I use, what I do and look at when I'm on the web and my history (everything I ever looked at in the past)!!! It can view my calendar (so it knows what I plan to do in the future) , And it can view all my contacts, it can access my storage, and it can access my microphone to record me when I'm not aware of it, ect ect.

I and many other people don't install apps that ask for unnecessary information, And I'm surprised that Jagex wants us to give away personal information to a unknown source in order to have our accounts protected on their game! This is disturbing.

And trying to use other methods of the Authenticator is a big hassle for people who don't want it and new player that just join RS. Thought I would say that so Dark Jam*i won't post something like he has been posting lol.

Then install a different one, one that doesn't have all these requirements of needing to know your details etc. It is not just google who has this app. They recommend Google, not say you have to use that.

I am using FreeOTP by Redhat, there are no extra requirements with this one. Redhat is a very respectable company who produces other software for Linux etc. FreeOTP has the scan app included so only install one app. All it needs access to is your camera, which makes sense I guess ;)

This is a good idea for some but for those of us that don't have one of these phones it is quite unfair. With JAG being removed those of us that can't use the new system will have no protection. You should add another type of protection for people who can't use this one so we all can be protected or keep JAG and let us chose which to use ourselves.

I don't even use google as a search engine, so why in HELL would I trust them with autheticator codes and access to my phone or computer? How many of you, including jmods, know exactly what google or these other companies can glean from you agreeing to let them into your phone or your computer? Is a dying game worth losing everything?

I've got Win Auth Set up it's working fine but I would like to ask one thing, say the unexpected happens and my pc stops working, how do I then get it working with my runescape account on a new system? 200m Dunge, Rc, Mage and invention accomplished, + 120 Constitution/Slayer/Range/Summoning/Woodcutting/Mining/Defence/Strength and 110m fishing, got comp/MQC and 200m Fishing/Woodcutting/Mining as well as 120 herb/Farming/Cooking most 120s just Agility, Theiving, Hunter and Prayer left
