Instead of getting rid of JAG, why not just keep both JAG AND the Authenticator.. Not everyone has access to smartphones, and this includes new players. Basically, for us to have extra security, Jagex will expect us to have a smartphone. Most smartphones that have app stores cost a good price, and the plans are even worse. I do not use a smartphone, and I cannot afford to get one. There are a good number of players, like me, who cannot afford to get one.
Jagex says they are keeping JAG around "for the time being" but "new players will not be able to use it". What about the new players who can't use the Authenticator for the lack of having a smartphone? So these players just go without that extra layer of security we were promised to have? Or do you guys plan to provide us with the money to get a smartphone so that we can use the new security plan?
Edit: To the people saying "you don't need a smartphone", the other methods of using it include a lot more hassle, and it's from unknown or untrusted sites in most cases. It's not worth it to put out a lot of personal data or risk for a game's security.
To the people saying "phishers were hijacking accounts with JAG", the only people who would get phished while having JAG were people who were oblivious. They didn't only need to have your email, but they would need your security questions as well. Your security questions are not stored in your email alone, they would need to know the answers to all of your questions (or most of them) to get into your account. What idiot would give away their answers to their security questions?
BOTH methods of security should be kept. This way people who like JAG, can use it. People who wanna use Authenticator, can use it. No harm in keeping both, and I'm sure since you're capable of holding both up "for the time being" now, you can keep both up indefinitely. So think of the rest of the people who can't use Authenticator.
