if forums was still popular the petition could work. We are beating a dead horse.
still there may be a 1% chance ......
If the forums were more popular, smaller percentage of people would have to vote with their wallets to change Jagex's mind, but if the necessary amount of people won't vote with their wallets in protest, it doesn't matter whether the petition is signed by 10 or a million people, the chance is exactly 0%. The point of a petition is to demonstrate the demand for whatever the petition is about, but since Jagex has all the data available to them about how many players have membership, what kind of membership, whether it's still recurring etc, they can use that data to see whether people are truly serious or just bluffing about their anger.
And since the deadline for the forums becoming read-only is tomorrow, and there seems to be no updates to this from Jagex's end, it looks like this is just another case of players saying "we're mad, but not that mad to quit over it", otherwise Jagex would've likely responded by now. This is why you have to also walk the walk, not just talk the talk.

Speaking up on all avenues still matters. Even if individual attempts aren't successful, repeated demand and persistence can still make a difference. Post forums, that means talking about the forums in the surveys, on any of the other platforms you choose to be on and potentially even emailing them directly.
I find a good policy for MTX is to only buy if you feel the peopls you're paying are worth supporting with no return. Big issues like the forums you're not ready to outright quit over are the kind of thing you'd deny additional money over in addition to the scummy MTX stuff they've been doing. With F2P how it is, you might as well quit if you cancel your subscription. I think people will genuinely quit over this, either directly or from its longer term effects. Don't forget community backlash got through to them over Hero Pass.
Yes, speaking up is important, because if people just quit in protest without saying why, Jagex might not realize why they left, but if the *only* thing you do is speak and nothing else, it won't change anything on its own. It's especially important to vote with your wallet *before* the unwanted change happens, because once the forums are shut down, even if you keep speaking about it afterwards, it'll be more difficult for Jagex to restore them, than if they didn't shut them down in the first place.
And yes, I remember Hero Pass, that time people actually did vote with their wallets, but they still calmed down too easily: not only wasn't HP removed (it was "discontinued", but it ran its course as scheduled), there was no punishment for Jagex, to discourage them from making a similar mistake in the future. I've no doubt they'll attempt a reskinned Hero Pass again in the future, when they feel like the players have become more tolerant towards the idea.

It's heartwarming seeing players banding together for this, i think we have well over 200 signatures...i doubt it will make a difference in the end, since money talks in another language
But at least we can say we tried, and i would rather support something i strongly believe in, even if enveloped in futility, than not try at all
Thank you to everyone who signed, we still have until tomorrow
I have such tremendous respect for you

for creating this petition. Although it may not result in the outcome many of us want, it allowed folks an avenue to voice their opinion. I am still disappointed there wasn't a poll/survey, or opportunity for the entire community to provide their feedback about the future of community social network preferences. Discord, Twitter, and Reddit are all except platforms - no one is arguing social media usage and engagement shouldn't evolve. These platforms all have different strengths and weaknesses, and the formal nature of the forums always made it a unique space for scapers to provide constructive feedback.
This thread really represents the forum community in the best light possible and reminds me of many other posts over the years where folks would post suggestions, engage in discussions, or even just stop by to mention a simple "support".
Well 'Scapers, if this is to be my swan song, I reckon it's a good one to go out with.
A song about the end of RuneScape - a sad thought which may come to pass sooner than anyone wants.
Apologies to Ultravox. Archived to RuneScapian Rhapsody in General.
Thanks to everyone who commented on and enjoyed these songs, as well as a huge thank you to Trewavas for having his thread, and for inviting me to participate.
It was a fun time.
