My usual account here is stoat_king but i have forgotten the password dammit.

So sorry for that. Losing access to a long time account is akin to losing a part of yourself. Hopefully you remember your login details at some point. Kinda miss Stout King's posts.

It wasn't just social media that killed the forums. It was mobile technology in general . The design, function, and moderation of the forums in and of itself is almost entirely irrelevant. To really use the forums you kind of need to be at a computer. Less and less people communicate that way every year.

Old school style forums like these don't work very well on mobile devices. Even as smartphone processors have reached laptop-grade in recent years and screens have gotten bigger, it still pales in comparison to using the RSOF at your desktop.

Good bye Mrs Ana and all. Thank you for your kind words on W & F chat thread Mrs Ana - I remember you too! I didn't want to post there again, since there are so few posts left for others to use. The demise of the forums is sad, but I fear inevitable :( Good bye forums. We will remember you with fondness! :(

That's so true, trying to use the forums on my phone is really frustrating.
Makes you wonder if the forums would have been more popular if they'd implemented a "mobile device friendly" redesign.

Forums are dead because:
Too many subforums, too few players. There are more subforums than there are active users, and some subforums are self-contained. Off-topic users will stick to off-topic. Oldschool users, which has more players but less forum users, obviously won't partake in RS3 topics. It's hard to have a discussion when everyone is divided.

No JMod presence. People will go to where they can get their feedback heard. It isn't here.

There's also a few persistent, toxic members of the community that moderation has done little about. While in isolation their comments aren't particularly offensive, new players will leave feedback, get a pedantic troll post that takes their feedback out of context, and be discouraged from ever posting again. Even if the post itself isn't technically against the rules, the damage done to the community cannot be undone, and moderators' hands are tied.

All of these factors mean that there's no new blood flowing into the forums, and they're all leaving for elsewhere. Lack of Jagex support, lack of clear direction for both the game and its forums, lack of communication with FMods, are all bigger issues. FMod power abuse is a rare thing, and FMods acting in bad faith are easily removed by Jagex.
Don't forget – RuneScape members get TWO free spins a day instead of the usual one!

I think the Jagex accounts had a hand in this too. The launcher keeps you logged in for a while before you have to re authenticate but you have to log in every single time you want to post on the forums. It was annoying enough when this meant having to either keep from timing out or relog multiples times but got even worse when that meant having to open your email to receive a passcode too. It cut down on my forum activity and I'm sure it did the same to others as well.

The trolls going unchecked and the effect that has on forum activity is definitely a major issue but I think the broader one is sheer neglect. The forums died because Jagex couldn't be bothered to update them with things like a block button or other major QoL features necessary to make it a good experience. That and its consistent exclusion every time they listed their community platforms actively pushed people away from joining and engaging with the forums.

The sticky will go past 2,000 posts, so we should be fine until the Forums are made read-only.

Thanks for everything you did during your time on the Forums, especially, during your Greenie days ;) !
