Spot on. It's a "vicious circle" - people don't want to use the forums because they need modernising, Jagex don't seem to want to modernise because people don't use the forums enough (that's my assumption anyway)

Developer time is expensive time. They aren't about to dedicated anyone to modernizing the forums when all their projects are already lagging behind. Yet's face it the forums have been relegated to the status of Runescape Classic. Once they inevitably break beyond simple fixes, I see Jagex removing them completely. They still exist for the loyal base and any that happen to find these halls, but with the game being client based rather than web based, less and less seek them out.

Points at the fact one must open the web browser, come to the main runescape site, login, hit the community pulldown tab, select forums, the peruse the forums for what they seek.

With the client launchers on our main desktop, no need for any of that so most new people don't know the forums even exist to begin with. One day they'll just be gone.

Just wanted to chime in here and say that social media has killed forums in their current state. People want to have a more instant way to communicate and forums are very 'analogue' and slow compared to the likes of Twitter or dare I say Reddit.

If the forums had a big upgrade to modernise them then it may help as they haven't really changed in the past 10 years. As much as I love the aesthetic of the RSOF, it's not made it easier to talk about the game.

Imo, Forums serve a purpose today as the place to say hello to old friends who care enough about "old friends" to bother to say hello and find out if they are ok.

As for discussional values forums are for the most part useless, random help, regular hello's, bit of fun here and there, item trading and moaners being snitchy moaners is the forums..

Even with all that, some of us "me included" still love these forums and are happy that they still remain in some way <3

Much love

Scouse - Did i forget to mention, a place to sometimes, not often, flip a bit and lose my your temper and become lovingly steered back to the right path by people who care <3

Yes they did have a role in the decline of the forums. Certain fmods have beefs with certain players, which leads to some players getting frustrated by the fmods response to them and then leaving the forums.

Maybe there is a snippet of truth in that yes but some people who may have gone through this scenario have stood back and not allowed it to continue.

Social media wasn't a culprit ... merely a new tool at that time, which is why new tools do not change anything but more or less make things far more complicated ... social media is slowly dying becoming worthless, full of scams spam and other frustrations.

The Grand Exchange ... never was a cause.

Jagex/JMods being everybodies friend ... they still are so that hasn't changed.

Interestingly FMods Team, active part, have been extremely decimated to a 'handful Team' of moderators whose work is well done.
They changed ... quite acceptable ... their contributions to improve are good ... and nobody is complaining.

Interestingly more things have changed rather for better than for worse.

All together ... The RuneScape Official Forums still stand strong and have withstand the sands of time quite well.

The fact that there aren't that much contributors at the moment is the fact about what is happening right now in the real world which keeps us occupied differently and more quietly.

Maybe people are fed up of discussions seeking for more silent moments to think things over thoroughly.

OMG Chee thought that pic was funny.

The team is caught in a catch 22. Can't share their directives with non-mods.

Jagex's directives this is your course of action, til we say otherwise... Jagex changes course, f-mods now look like power mad sociopaths. Queries why were we given no heads up.

Jagex goes oh yeah here's your new direction til we say otherwise. Rinse and repeat.

That there was the vicious cycle. I think you all would be amazed as the amount of things the team agreeed with that had to be shutdown because of the directives from Jagex. There were certainly things that I found to be funny, that weren't appropriate here but made me laugh.

My usual account here is stoat_king but i have forgotten the password dammit.

Im sure you will find it ironic that, now im a mod for one of the larger subreddits, I can see that most of my criticisms of the mod team here were wildly misguided, and for that I apologise.
In truth, you cant really know what moderation actually involves unless you've done it.

On reddit, the mod teams are self governing and thats hard enough. But to have your rules imposed in a top-down fashion by people who have no clue must be incredibly tough and put you in an impossible position much of the time.

I dont think that would be viable for the mod team i am a member of - its just too busy with about 70K posts a week. Unless there was some flexibility, it would become impossible. And by the sounds of it, you have no flexibility whatsoever.

Another thing i have realized is that accusations of 'inconsistent moderation' are based on a fundamental misunderstanding of what is going on. It would be inconsistent even if there was only one mod. The best proofreaders only achieve an accuracy of about 90%.
The only way to ensure 100% consistency would be moderation by software and the cure would definitely be worse than the disease.

Another irony is that the mod team I am a part of is far more hated than the RSOF mod team ever was lol
