Is it enough?

As clan leaders I am sure most of us have had the problem of people trolling our clan, whether they are bitter rivals, or members who were kicked for whatever reason. They spread lies, they say horrible things, make you look bad, and so much more.

We are told that we should just report and then ignore these people. But is it enough?

I have had people follow my clan members around saying things like:

"Shit clan"
"This clan is shit"
"Kill yourself"
"People in this clan suck"
"This clan is a scamming clan"
"They are all hackers!"

So I told my clan members what pmods and jmods told me. Report and ignore them. They did. Even though these people were telling my clan members to kill theirselves...nothing came of the report. Aside from the kill yourself and other things, there is another issue here at hand.

No matter who we report or ignore, by people saying these things (with little consequence) they are attaching a huge negative stigma to your clan. Essentially, destroying your rep to the public. Which is another huge problem. How you are viewed by non clan members is a big deal in terms of recruitment, and interacting with other people. You can ignore them all you want, but it doesn't stop the issue.

*DISCLAIMER* I acknowledge that reports yield results for some. But when it comes to personal experience, it hasn't happened.

No it isn't good enough, but is there really anything more that can be done about it ?

These people trolling, be it in clan chat, out of clan chat, next to clan members or randomly on world where we don't see them, there isn't anything we can do other than report and ignore.

We have to be the bigger person and just let them get it out of their system, eventually they lose interest without a response and move on. After all, we can't be that bad if someone wants to waste all this time and energy on us ;)

The first is most likely only a problem if you take underaged players into your clan, I'm pretty sure no one above the age of 12 cares what people tell them to do online.

Besides, how are a few trolls able to ruin your reputation to the public? Where do they spread their lies in such a manner that it actually affects your clan reputation? O_o

Honestly all you can do is report and ignore. They'll just have to learn they aren't welcome anymore. And obviously attacking random clan members is pretty weak, but that's really just more proof they couldn't have lasted long in the first place.

Its them who are wasting their time with it. The only thing that can be done is that reports are taken seriously. That goes for any reports really.
I don't know what to put here.

The phrase "The best thing to do is report and ignore them" really should be replaced by "The most you can do is report and ignore them."

Time and time again it feels like my clan is having to turn to people not affiliated with Jagex in order to resolve rulebreaking issues. I can recall a specific time in the past where I posted on Flag A Concern about a player trying to sexually harass several of our female clan members. Matthe told me to "report and ignore him," which wasn't good enough because this player kept harassing more of our clan members, and was never punished by Jagex. We ended up having to hire a group of people to find a way to resolve the issue, because Jagex allowed that behavior to happen - even after being informed of it. It's honestly very sad when we have to resort to player-run groups that use unconventional means of rule enforcement because Jagex either can't or won't take action against the offending people.

Oh and for anyone who is familiar with the legal system, encouraging suicide (i.e. "kill yourself" ) can result in a 20 year prison sentence in some states and countries. It's really a good idea for Jagex to crack down on what these people are saying before Jagex gets pulled into a legal battle for not properly handling it.

Even putting aside the clan element in this situation Jagex do no where near enough to stop people who continuously harass and say despicable things in game.

Solutions.

1. Real mutes, this includes up to 1 week, 2 weeks, 1month, 6months depending on the severity and continuation of the abuse.

2. No quick chat with mutes, remove people from being able to quick chat when muted, its just an excuse to be even more annoying using quick chat.

The game is rampant with people who continue to use disgusting language and have no action taken against them, Jagex have slacked big time when it comes to this they use to be a lot more on the ball in previous years.

Tackling the bigger offenders will have a knock on effect and the lesser offences will also start to decline.

Reporting and ignoring usually work fine when anyone feels like being disruptive towards my clan. A little bit of humour, saying why their behaviour is unappreciated, and suggesting an alternative way to express themselves are also things that can help.

Does reporting work though? I find most people who get reported nothing happens to them and when they are muted they spam quick chat for a few days and back to their horrible selves.

Real punishments will produce real results.
