This thread on the General forums got me thinking today.

W hat w ould y ou d o i f: you walked in on a clanmate who was dressed to the nines with third-age melee armor, a partyhat, etc... and was standing in the Grand Exchange spamming "Rewarding kindness" and "First person to trade me 5mil won't regret it!"?

I know quite a few people feel very different on whether or not this behavior is a form of scamming, and I know even more people have different clan policies on scammers. As a result, I'm quite curious to see how you as experienced clan leaders would take to seeing one of your own partaking in this behavior.

To summarize the scenario: You walk into the Grand Exchange to see a clanmate wearing as many "wealthy" items as he/she can, and they're "deceptively begging."

If I knew 100% that they were scamming I would ask my co-leaders what they think and it would be voted on if we want them to remain in the clan. I try not to get involved with what people do outside of the clan chat, as it's none of my concern really.

If the vote didn't pass that person certainly would be blocked for obtaining any high rank within the clan.

In honesty, I would kick them. Even if they aren't actually scamming people I don't wish to take chances - never have I known someone stand in the G.E. saying that sort of thing without being a scammer before. As such, I wouldn't trust them. I might ban them, but probably not unless I was certain it was a scam. MrBrokenBow - Former Leader and Founder of

According to the Official Rules regarding Scamming , "An 'item scam' is to obtain GP and/or items from another player by via dishonest means," and "misleading other players for your own personal gain is not in the spirit of fair play."

Judging solely on those statements, I would classify this scenario as scamming disguised as begging. Players who fall victim to giving their hard-earned wealth to these "scammers" draped in equipment worth billions only do so in hopes of receiving a payment (cash or items) of a greater value than they traded away.

If that doesn't fit the criteria of "obtaining GP and/or items from another player by via dishonest means," then I would like to see it explained so I could see otherwise.

If a player in my clan was caught doing this, I would question their motive behind it intently, as this is not the type of representation I want my members to portray. This would highly-likely be followed by their removal from the clan, but without having dealt with this issue personally, I cannot say for certain.

I have, however, kicked several members for scamming in the g.e. & duel arena, and botting. Though these issues are not directly taking place within our Clan Chat or to other clan members, these players are still breaking rules and proper action will be taken accordingly.

It's 100% a scam and there are no two ways about it. If you're being generous, you will give directly and won't insert any conditions or steps/tricks before doing that. Very similar to that is doubling, for example, which is officially classified as scamming by Jagex, and simply saying 'doubling money' and being reported for it results in a 24-hour mute offence.

To me it's an instant kick , no matter how the person tries to wrap it up because lots of people have suffered to and been deceived/scammed by his kind. There is usually little to no discussion required or necessary between leaders about it.

Even if it hasn't happened in the clan/chat, it's a matter of morals and ethics (which we govern for a player as a whole and as a person, and extends beyond the clan environment) and I'm always concerned with how members could be representing the clan in public, and misbehaving/trolling/rule-breaking in public would obviously result in a kick from the clan, especially as a community clan with the best interests of the RS community at heart and how each of our members can make a difference to make the community as a whole a better place and experience for all the players.

If I was a Clan Officer in a Clan where I saw that? I would want that person to not be in my Clan anymore. Personally speaking. Mod MattHe | Former Community Manager, now in Events & occasional Lore Monkey

I would talk to them and find out why they are doing this, but it is very likely I will have to tell them to leave the Clan if I felt they are not being honest about the reason, or willingness to stop such behavior. I always have a zero tolerance policy, however, I don't think prioritizing the use of authority is always the right thing to do. Often, it is communication, discussion, and reason which will have better effects than use of power.

Make no mistake though, a dishonest person is not destined to ever stay in our Clan.

Wow, this is a much more unanimous opinion than I thought X)

Matthe, I'm a little curious: Do you consider this behavior to be a form of scamming (Personally speaking, of course)?

I would remove them from my clan.

At best, their motives are questionable. Regardless of whether they were actually scamming or not, the actions are not what we expect of our clan mates, and we would not want that sort of behaviour associated with the clan.
