"From what you have spoken of your people, they do sound as if they possess many similarities to my children," Umbra remarked, tone unchanging. "Albeit... more careful. The dragons of shadow hoarded knowledge and skill much in the way many dragons hoard gold, but they were... freer with it, in a sense. Not as if they went out to share and teach what they knew with other beings, but those who befriended them could learn a great deal. They also took no measures to remain hidden from or avoid other creatures, although they were generally unknown to most races of the world. Our civilization was crafted entirely within the bowels of the earth, the only great contact with another civilization being when they tunneled into Terra and encountered her children. Very few ever saw the light of the sun, yet few cities beneath its warming rays could match our prowess, whether in the form of magical and technological advancements or that of culture and art. I often wonder what would have became of it when they inevitably came into regular contact with surface civilizations."

"That is an amusing notion," Caelidorus said softly, tail flicking. "That would certainly make her appear more attractive to younglings. For whatever reason, hatchlings seem to love playing and rolling about in fields of flowers."
"Then it very well may be delayed until further in the future," Forlirn stated, gazing off at the horizon. "Soul may not allow the ritual until you have thought on it at great length. It is not a matter she takes lightly."

As the next wave of attacks began, Heinrich sighed. His defensive strategy would have to wait. All that mattered right now was repelling the current assault. His advisors were asking him for his next move. After a moments pause, he gave them his orders. "Get any civilians in the area into the metro tunnels. They might say that they want to fight, but ignore them. I will not have innocent people die on my watch. Meanwhile, have the defenders initiate Defensive Plan B."

The orders were transmitted via Morse Code to other pockets in the city. Any soldiers not involved in fighting spent their time rounding up refugees and escorting them to nearby metro stations to wait out the fighting. Many protested. They had seen the invaders butcher surrendering soldiers and knew that their backs were against the wall. Once in the tunnels, many of the civilians began to think of ways that they could contribute to the Imperial defenses. It was better then slowly suffocating in the dark tunnels of the metro system. It didn't help that many of the leaders of the initial rebellion were in the tunnels stirring up trouble.

While this was going on, the defenders responsible for holding off the main enemy thrust into their territory began to execute Defensive Plan B. As soon as the order reached the defending troops, charges were detonated. Several tall buildings (which were scheduled to be destroyed anyway due to the Imperium classifying them as having an 'improper appearance') were demolished; filling several streets with mountains of rubble and effectively preventing the attacking forces from using those routes. Any attackers who attempted to climb the rubble (a slow process at the best of times) had to deal with accurate sniper fire. Thus, the attackers were forced into preselected attack routes.

Defensive Plan B did not end there. The streets had been mined and filled with small explosive packs which further hampered the attackers. Should an invader overcome these, they would have to deal with concentrated machine gun and rifle fire. While the majority of the Imperial Forces would hold off the attacking forces using these chokepoints, a small number were sent behind their lines to prepare for the next stage of the plan. Machine gun emplacements (with guns facing both deeper into Imperial territory and towards the enemy lines) were set up and the streets were again mined. Meanwhile, a smaller force were sent into the cramped sewers to plant more explosive charges underneath the attacking forces. A quick look at a map would reveal that, outside from any underground locations that the Imperial Army was not aware of, the only thing underneath the chokepoints were sewer tunnels. With so many invaders above them, the explosives would hopefully devastate the enemy ranks; negating any advantage in numbers that the enemy possessed.

Another plane was downed by the lightening blast; it's systems shutting down and the pilot having no choice but to bail out. The four other aircraft continued on their respective ways. Two flew back to Imperial territory with news of an unknown draconic force within the mountains while the other two flew towards Glaruindem. The aircraft were outnumbered, outgunned, and outmaneuvered by the enemy but they still possessed one attribute that the enemy could not beat: speed. Though the enemy dragons were undeniably fast, they could not beat the jets at supersonic speed. Using this speed to their advantage, they sped towards Glaruindem. Reaching the city, it was apparent that something had gone horribly wrong. All across the city, one could see explosions and bursts of gunfire. It was difficult to tell who was fighting who or how the battle fared from the sky, but it was clearly an intense battle. On the ground, Imperial soldiers cheered upon seeing the aircraft. Seeing some sign of the outside world raised the morale of the defenders significantly. They were no longer alone.

The airplanes took photographs of the situation for analysis back home. No doubt the intelligence forces would be able to figure out exactly what had happened and develop a countermeasure for it. On the third pass, one of the pilots saw a red flare rise up from a tall building in the city. The meaning was clear: a red flare was used in the Imperial Army to designate a unit under attack that was in danger of being overrun. With this knowledge in hand, the planes made course for home.

((Fair enough. Let me know if you believe I am being unfair in my roleplaying. I am trying to write Imperial commander Heinrich as if he is a talented military figure who is able to understand and react to his enemy quickly. I want for him to be an excellent commander, not a god of war.))

"I will speak of Draxta if I desire to." Michael said in a quiet but firm voice. "I will also talk about your dead son if that is what I want." Michael paused for a moment. "With that being said, I did not come here to talk about them. I have other things that I wish to talk to you about. But first... I suppose it would not hurt to make you more comfortable. I imagine that looking at me with that chain around your neck is uncomfortable, to put it mildly." Michael paused again to knock on the cell door. The guard entered the cell and wordlessly unlocked the collar and any restraints that were preventing the dragon from sitting up before again departing. Michael smiled. "That's better. Now then, please do as I asked, Ventrus."

Although it had only been a few days since the occupation had begun, Elmsbourg was already a completely different place from what it was before. Imperial banners hung from the sides of the tallest buildings, statues of non-human heroes had been destroyed, and the square in front of the former council chambers had been turned into a gallows of sorts. Despite this, many of the human residents found themselves saying that things were not as bad as they had expected them to be. Whether it was out of genuine kindness or a simple attempt to win the human population over, Imperial forces treated the human residents well. Homeless people were taken off of the streets and offered jobs and an apartment, as an example. Many humans, especially those who did not really associate with non humans anyway, found themselves saying that things might not be so bad after all.

"I know what you mean. Back home, children are subjected to those images all the time. Even as a child, I never understood the appeal. Back then, I was more interested in soldiers and things like that. Back in the day, all the kids in my neighbourhood would go out and pretend we were soldiers fighting a war with the good soldiers in the Imperial Army fighting off the evil dragon worshipping cultists. It may have been childish, but it was fun. But anyway, I have to confess that I am even more excited to partake in this ritual then before. To be honest, my initial excitement came only from knowing that I would be able to continue on with you after all this is over. I wasn't sure how I felt about joining your clan. But in the past few days, I've thought about it some more and decided that I am genuinely looking forward to experiencing your clan firsthand and helping it grow and prosper. From what you have shared, I think I will fit in rather well. I just hope I live up to whatever expectation that you have for me." Matt said, glancing around as he spoke.

Matt turned back to Forlirn. "I can appreciate that. I don't think either of us want to just rush into this without knowing more about it anyway. If Soul wants for us to wait, then I have no problem in doing so. I'll be happy just to find out more about it and get the process started so that the two of us can come back to it at a better time." Matt said.

((Hey Dar, I'm thinking it would be interesting if the Imperium defeated the Tempests at Glaruindem. If you think about it, an Imperial victory there is a blow to both the protagonists and antagonists. The Tempest Empire is weakened while the Imperium remains a wildcard of sorts that is not under the control of either side. We can talk about it ingame, if you would like.))

''If I offend you by say this I apologize in advance but, after this venture is over....if I am permitted to re-enter my own home...you are more than welcome to come with me. With the similarities between my people and your children I am sure you may find some comfort there. But I understand if you would not want to, I thought I would just offer.'' said Rhen.

In truth Rhen was sincere in his offer, but in another way he wanted the company of the Ancient so he could learn more. After all that he had seen and heard, the Ancients fascinated him and the knowledge they had intrigued Rhen greatly. Plus, if Umbra wanted to pursue the offer Rhen made about building him a body, he would need Umbra to be there to test the enchantments and make sure everything fit well. But ultimately it was Umbra's choice and Rhen would not push the issue.

~Now that I think upon things......the worlds will never know what we are doing to save them. Such is the life of heroes and exiles.~ thought Rhen with a bit of grim humor while he picked at the crystals encasing his arm.

((As I'm extremely overdue for a post and still have yet to find the time to reply, I think I at least owe you an update. I began graduate school approximately a month ago and it has left me quite busy. Busy enough for me to doubt I knew what it meant to be busy before. Important part is I still have no intention of ending or leaving the thread. Bad part is I still do not know when I'll have time to reply. I'll try to post when I can, but I cannot promise to do so regularly.))

Still holding out? By the orders of a human commander no less? Fine, he was impressed; Argentus wasn't fool enough not to admit that. Shame he'd not have the opportunity to duel this enemy commander following the battle; the man had earned that honor even if he served the despicable 'Imperium of Men' or whatever the craven leaders called it. To have effective countermeasures already prepared directly after a victory when nothing hinted at a counter-attack... he'd underestimated his enemy. No more of that. Clearly the man was planning something; the blocked off streets were no-longer viable avenues of attack, so why block of some rather than all? Clearly a trap of some sort; he'd order the troops to back out of the assault and form a defensive perimeter, something the Tempest found reminiscient of siege warfare.
A typical battle would be constantly adapting new tactics to foil the enemy's newest plan until the enemy simply could not keep up. However, the urgency of the battle combined with the resilience of the enemy made this much less viable. The hope was most of the city would still be standing at the end of the day, but that simply could not be met. It was time to bury the pockets of resistance in the Undercity.

While some of the defenders had rushed the choke-points before the order made it through, most remained in the liberated portions of the city, ready to exchange fire with any Imperialists who showed their heads. They were quite intent not to let a single man through.
Hardly a minute later a deep rumbling would shake the city, much like an earthquake. The source would not be immediately evident, but the trembling of the very stones of the ancient city certainly made it seem as if a sudden earthquake had struck.
