Imperial soldiers caught outside of the ruined buildings in the battle zone were mostly smart enough to avoid open combat with the enemy. Such an action was reasoned to be foolish. Most soldiers who could not find a place to bunker down in resorted to ambush tactics. Any enemy soldier foolish enough to allow themselves to be separated from others would soon be treated to a bullet to the head if unlucky or a knife in the back to attract their comrades if unlucky. When help would come, the would-be rescuer would quickly find himself in need of rescue. Despite seeing success with these tactics, the Imperial soldiers knew that they would eventually be discovered and killed. Should help not arrive, it was inevitable. These tactics were not meant to hold the city. They were meant to make the enemy pay the highest possible price to take it.

Those soldiers not in the streets hid in ruined buildings. Their tactics were more straightforward defensive ones. The soldiers would fire out of the ruins and onto advancing enemy soldiers. Occasionally, these soldiers would wait until the enemy had passed by before firing at them from behind. Taking these buildings would be a costly process.

Outside of the city, artillery began to fire at the mountain ranges surrounding the city. While a few had been brought in to support the upcoming battle, most had already been set up to support the initial push onto the city. The aim of the artillery was simply to cause havoc. It was obvious to everyone that the mountains made it difficult for them to do much damage. At the same time, it was hoped that the occasional shell would fine a target or destroy a defensive position. Other soldiers had already begun to stream in from across the Imperium. Though they arrived in great numbers, it would be some time before the entire army was assembled and ready for battle.

As was usual, Matt spent most of the flight to the Soulbound chatting with Caelidorus about whatever came to mind. When it was apparent that they were close, Matt grew silent for a moment to think about the upcoming meeting with Soul. " Well, here we are. It's hard to believe that we are really going through with this. Had you told me a year or even a month ago that I'd be taking part in a complex ritual that binds my soul to that of a dragon... well, I'd probably have them locked up. It's strange how things end up working out. I suppose there are worse ways to end up then this." Matt remarked.

((Just a quick update. As you can tell, I obviously have (finally) become a member and thus changed my name. I don't know if there is any editing in the thread that needs to be done because of my name change...

Also Darlantan, I would still like to get in touch with you at some point about the thread. I would like to figure out who is going to win the big battle we are fighting. In addition, I have an idea that I would like to throw out at you. I don't want to interrupt you in-game if you are doing anything, so why don't you get in touch with me when you have a free moment? If you don't want to do that, then we can figure out a time and talk then. Anyway, sorry for the long OOC post. I just wanted to make sure we were on the same page.))

Rhen pondered Umbra's words the rest of the way to the Soulbound. Umbra was right in many ways perhaps there was hope that he could return home. As for the Void, Rhen knew himself that the Void was in him as he was corrupted by it. But perhaps Umbra had meant something else by his remark? Who knew, but what Rhen did know was that he had to meet Tenebra. Rhen hunger for knowledge of the Void was a health one to be sure as no one knew much of anything about it. To possibly meet a being that might know everything there is to know on something so little knowledge existed about was a chance Rhen could not miss.

''You said you sensed the Void in me. I know I am physically corrupted by it and my mind is clear of its influence but yet you sense something. Is there something that you can sense that I cannot see and Animus cannot see in my mind?'' Rhen asked Umbra as he came out of his own thoughts in a mellow tone. "I feel explicitly drawn to the Void. I want to study it, to learn as much as I can about it, as if there is some deeper connection that ties me to it that I cannot shake. My mind is clear yet I hear a calling but from what I do not know. I know the Void does not have a draconic aspect to rule over it as Soul told me that it currently does not play a big enough role in the world to warrant spawning an Ancient. But yet something calls me to the Void and drives me to study it and to come closer to it. It is not a physical or mental call however, more like a pulling force. Perhaps it is tied to what you sense perhaps not. But if what you say about Tenebra is true, he might know. But I must maintain my focus and help everyone else defeat Nihil. I cannot waver in my conviction, my own goals must come second unless they run parallel with our current goals.''

The defenders' tactics remained unvaried now for the most part, simply pushing at the remaining pockets of resistance. The soldiers had a surprising level of discipline for an army with no record of actually existing, remaining organized in small squads when splitting up.

The response from the forces entrenched in the mountains was minimal, occasionally firing back in response to the attacks. It was quite low compared to the barrage the aircraft had encountered suggesting the mountain garrison did not plan on revealing its positions just yet.

Peter came to a halt in one of the well-secured areas of Glaruinem, iconic structures of the city lying as rubble behind him. A film crew began the process of setting up to record his speech; it would be broadcasted shortly after, the recording needing to be physically removed a fair distance from Glaruindem for it to actually reach anybody. Meanwhile the message of evacuation would be circulated among the citizens, hopefully in time to escape whatever was coming.

"I think I'd have reacted similarly if I'd been told fate would carry out this way," Caelidorus nodded thoughtfully. "Particularly given how my clan would likely view such a suggestion. Hah, there certainly are worse routes to go. Such as death... or comitting unpleasant things. I am curious exactly what this ritual will entail."

"You may simply have an unnatural interest in the void, although given your nature it might even have something to do with your creation," Umbra remarked, tail flicking lazily. "I might not know the exact details but I do know magic is typically a rather complex mixture of energies. Such can be rather chaotic... and some may be more present at one moment than another. Including those associated with the void. However, I'm not entirely certain Soul is correct. While there is no ancient aspect of the void... well, it's like it has a certain quality to it. Almost like the faint scent of an ancient."

Heinrich smiled as the latest messenger from the front departed from what remained of the Imperial Headquarters. His little pocket of resistance was holding firm against what could only be described as a relentless enemy advance. This was a temporary state of affairs of course. Still, maintaining a stable front line for even a few hours bought the reinforcing troops that much more time to relieve his battered troops. It would only be a matter of time before his soldiers would be forced to retreat again. Despite this grim state of affairs, Heinrich still had a few tricks up his sleeve. The few soldiers that could be spared from combat were busy planting the remaining explosives behind the front lines. When the bulk of his soldiers were forced back, the enemy would be destroyed or badly damaged by the following explosions. Again, this could only delay what was currently inevitable. But at this point in time, that was the best that could be done. Morale among his men was still high. The enemy had been badly bloodied. No doubt the invading commander was seething in rage. Many thousands of heathen soldiers lay dead. The green dragons (who were apparently in charge of the enemy army) had underestimated mankind and the Human Imperium. Now, they were paying the ultimate price for this.

The next phase of the initial bombardment began. Thousands of aircraft suddenly emerged from above the clouds. Flying at near supersonic speed, half of the air force dropped their payload upon the mountains while the other half bombed key targets within the city and the surrounding area. Accompanying the bombers were fighter jets that engaged any dragons that took to the skies to fight back.

"Oh, no doubt we are going to be subjected to physical and mental torture that will be so intense that even you will be screaming from the pain by the time she is done. I'm sure our mental health will be in a terrible state when this is all done. If you ask me, the whole ritual would still be worth it." Matt remarked, as he chuckled from the joke. " My only regret about all of this is that we will not be able to celebrate this in the proper Neuvian way. Something like this... I'd imagine that we would have had a massive feast or celebration were this to happen back home. You'd have a good time. From what I understand about your clan, it sounds like something they would approve of. Well, regardless, we will have to find a way to celebrate. It's not every day you have your soul torn from your body and combined with another, after all. In all seriousness, I have to admit that I am looking forward to the reaction of your people when we go to your capital city. I wouldn't be surprised if some of your people think you are insane or have gone soft because of me. It should be interesting, to put it mildly."

''I see. I guess my interest really comes from the fact that the Void has been left unstudied by any race that we know of. It is a massive hole in our knowledge of magic and energy and without knowing more about it we cannot know its potential dangers. In a way that both excites and frightens me to be honest. As to you saying Soul might be wrong, you think there is something in the Void? Something either tied to Ancients or maybe, just maybe the beginning of a new Ancient possibly? Either way it would be wondrous to go to the Void and study whatever it may be, if I could survive the Void that is.'' said Rhen with a slow nod.

Rhen pondered Umbra's words further as he reflected on his own. Perhaps Umbra was right, about his interest in the Void being unnatural. It was considered forbidden by his people for a reason, but just what was that reason. The question begged to be answered yet what would it end up costing him in the long run? It had already cost him an arm, his wings, and the love of his people, what more aside from his life could his pursuit take from him? For one he knew it might take the rest of his body, or at-least the Void itself would with how it was already corrupting his flesh, his mind however remained strong until now, Rhen has hopes that it would remain that way. It seemed that every time Rhen drew closer to answers on the Void, more questions arose, and that intrigued Rhen for his thirst for knowledge was great as he had spent his entire life dedicated to unraveling the secrets of the Void.

Without warning the skies were suddenly full of opposing aircraft opening fire on the Imperial airstrike from three sides. It wasn't as if they'd suddenly appeared from the clouds or rose from the ground; in a blink of an eye, the skies had gone from empty to filled. The defenders clearly had more tricks up their sleeve although it remained a mystery how they achieved invisibility or where the technologically advanced army came from.

"Imperium," Peter's broadcast began once it was brought out of the city limits. "I am the head of one of the ruling family's of Glaruindem, the family best known for watching. I have watched your plot to surreptitiously take control of Glaruindem unfold and prepared our allies long in advance to repel you assault. You have attacked us without provacation, you have sought to slaughter the nonhumans of a multicultural city which has stood as such before your mighty nation had but a city. I speak to you now to offer peace in exchange for your withdrawal, for in attacking us you have taken far more than you have bargained for. Beyond the mountains exist the great nations of nonhumans, held together in an alliance vaster than you entire empire. Things are different on this side of the mountains; here we stand as brothers, human and inhuman, man and non-man. Any presence of your nationalistic genocide will not be tolerated here; any attack on us is considered an attack on all. Unlike previous opponents, you now face an alliance larger than and as well equipped as your empire, an alliance as willing to fight to the death as your soldiers would through themselves under the treads of a tank at your command. Withdraw and we shall leave your nation on the west side of the mountains at peace. Continue and we shall not only drive you out but assault your nation with the same ferocity you have attacked us. Consider carefully; your nation is not the only with a bomb which can level a city."

"We quite enjoy times of revelry," Caelidorus replied, nodding his head lightly. "It is a common occurrence at times of victory or when enjoying a surplus. And... well, we often enjoy surpluses. Perhaps we should go for a hunt and enjoy our kill a bit more excessively than we normally would. And yes, some would consider me rather mad for such an action. But, they would continue to heed and respect my words; my standing is quite important in our society."

"I wouldn't say the beginnings of a new ancient," Umbra shook his head, frowning in thought. "An ancient... there is no 'beginning' or formation process, an ancient simply is just as the moment before the ancient was not. But there is something which reminds me of ancients, something I've never been able to place. It's like a scent. An unfamiliar scent... but one with certain similarities to bring up unrelated memories. Either way, I would not recommend a trip to the void. You would need extensive, perfectly crafted protections. A bit like visiting the Abyss albeit slightly less risky. The void is corruptive and destructive of all which enters whereas the Abyss actively seeks to consume anything which enters. Although I am curious what you would see."
