Unfortunately for the occupying forces, the centuries old-and-forgotten Undercity of Glaruindem appeared only on the oldest of maps, an unkept secret of sorts known only as a footnote in local museums of the city's history. It was a good deal deeper than the more modern sewage system, sizeable enough to be a large town. Perhaps ironically, the defending forces had just detonated a series of charges beneath the pockets of resistance, completely unaware of the Imperialists' similar plan of action. Massive sinkholes would form throughout the city, rapidly collapsing into the abandoned portion of the city beneath. The buildings would collapse soon after the detonations, nothing built with enough integrity to hold together with the ground collapsing beneath. Massive clouds of dust would raise into the air from the collapsing segments of the city, obscuring vision and choking any caught within.
The defenders held their positions to catch any Imperialists who might try to flee the collapsing buildings, steadfast despite the destruction.

The pursuing dragons would abandon the chase for the aircraft heading back into the Imperium, not foolish enough to expose themselves to whatever ground forces might normally be patrolling the Imperium. The assault would not let up on the aircraft which made it past the mountain barrier, the force occupying the mountains preparing for the planes to return while continuing to fire from range. Attempting to pass back over the mountains later would seem almost suicidal; the abnormal U shape they made around the city made it extremely well defended by any forces in the mountains. Added to that was the thousands of Tempests securing the countryside between the city and mountains; they'd waste little time lighting up the sky with a seemingly endless hailstorm of lightning bolts. The aircraft would also be subject to the mysterious deadzone around the city. Not enough to knock them out of the skies, but it would disrupt any of their more sensitive instrumentation. Likely far from ideal when a few thousand Tempests were focused at knocking you from the sky.

((That would be an intriguing turn of events, although such a victory would not be easily won. Although the Tempests are arguably the most dangerous combatants present, they are allied forces present due to obligation as allies. The ones actually fighting are inhabitants of Glaruindem defending their home and others beyond the mountains come to make a stand against the Imperium. You are welcome to speak to me in-game about it, if you catch me online.))

Ventrus let out a soft snort, although the dragon said nothing more. Rather, he slowly lifted his head and stared the man dead in the eyes without blinking. It was a fairly empty stare, a very human stare of one who no longer cared about anything in the world. Many would find it unsettling to look into eyes like that.

"Mostly we trained. Hatchlings among the Tempests don't tend to be given a tremendous amount of time for play... although many of us viewed training as play, in a way," Caelidorus mused. "Always curious how others are surprised at our fighting prowess, considering we're trained for at least a century before we even begin actual battle. Hard to say what would be expected of you. There hasn't been a human as part of the clan in all of recorded history. And our history stretches back millennia, well into the times when dragons controlled Neuva mercilessly."
"Well then, shall we be off?" Forlirn questioned, perhaps a tad bit impatiently. "The safety of our target makes me anxious... we may very well never get another lead if the Imperium snatches him up. Or if he gets eaten by a dragon..."

"Offend me? Hah, you'll have to try harder than that," Umbra snorted with amusement. "Your kind intrigue me greatly, given your obvious magical nature. Nothing like you exists in any of my memories, although again I haven't quite been able to witness most of history passing me by throughout the eons. Yes, I think there's a chance I may take the offer. After certain matters are in order... I would like to see if any of my children managed to escape and still survive in this day and age. Although if they do not, I don't exactly have anywhere I need to be."

Rumbling... trembling... on her back...? Was it time already...? She'd only just started napping, it was much too soon to be woken up... wasn't it? Wasn't her brother either... but it was just far too soon to be woken up already, best to just keep napping. Sleep made for a delightful slumber... the scent of blood always made it less restful though...

((I'm currently on break, so I may be more available for posting for the next week or two.))

As soon as the vibrations began, Heinrich and his staff took cover under tables and desks to protect themselves. Earthquakes were an unfortunate fact of life in parts of the Imperium, and the defenders simply assumed that this was one of those. When Heinrich felt the sensation of falling, he realized that this was no earthquake. He was on the ground floor of a house with no basement, yet it felt as if he had jumped off the top of a skyscraper. His mind was a jumble of thoughts. ~It must be the explosives that I had set. No, but the explosives were set several blocks away. There shouldn't be any damage here! Is this only happening here or is it all over the city?~ His thoughts were interrupted when the entirety of his body violently hit the floor as the falling sensation stopped. He looked around. What was once the dining room of a nice house in a prosperous neighbourhood of the city was nothing more then a pile of rubble. There was nothing in the rubble to indicate that this was once part of a house other than the occasional piece of furniture that had managed to avoid being badly damaged by... whatever had happened. It was hard to see anything. The... event, had caused a cloud of dust to shroud the entire area. For once, Heinrich envied his soldiers. They were each given a gas mask that would make breathing in these conditions easy. Being an officer behind the lines, he had not bothered to keep such a mask on him. He regretted that decision now. He began to violently cough from the dust. Little oxygen was reaching his lungs as a result. ~Goddess, I didn't expect to die from something like this.~ Just as he was about to give up hope of surviving, he heard a faint voice. "My Lord," it began "put this on." A mask was pushed into his hand. Desperately, he forced the mask onto his face and paused to take several deep breaths. "Thank you soldier!" He gasped.

With the immediate danger having passed, Heinrich took a moment to consider the situation and how to respond to it. As he saw it, what had happened was both a blessing and a curse. For the time being, he could not communicate with any of the other survivors (If he had survived, he reasoned that others had survived as well). Each soldier was on his own. Although Imperial soldiers were trained on how to survive on their own and without communication from a superior, the lack of control bothered him greatly. On the positive side, the apparent destruction of much of the city made the defense of the ruins much easier. The battle had shifted into a type of urban combat that his men were familiar with. Front lines and zones of control were meaningless now. What mattered was who could navigate the ruins of the city and exploit the piles of rubble for their own purposes. He was convinced that this was something his men could do. He looked around at the rubble of the house. In the right hands (such as his own), the rubble could become a makeshift fortress. Though the enemy had appeared to cease his attacks just prior to whatever had happened, he believed that any future attacks would be swiftly repelled with heavy losses. ~How ironic.~ He thought ~The invaders no doubt believed that they had won the battle with this attack. In doing so, however, they have sealed their fate.~

The surviving aircraft had almost left visual range of the city when the pilot noted a peculiar sight. Part of the city (the part that the fighting appeared to be centred around) had sudden collapsed into the earth. The pilot was tempted to fly back to the city and see what had happened, but he thought better of it. He had been lucky to avoid being destroyed by the invading army thus far. He did not want to tempt fate by going back into a danger zone, especially when he had intelligence that was desperately needed back home. Thus, the aircraft continued until it landed back at the airbase from which it had originally departed.

When the aircraft landed, the photographs and a copy of the pilots report were transmitted to army command. Shortly after, the Emperor himself was looking at the photographs as his generals awaited their orders. The available options were somewhat limited. Either the Imperium needed to leave the surviving soldiers to their fate or they needed to launch a counterattack. Diplomacy with the invading barbarians was out of the question. Time passed without anything being said. The Emperor merely stood there, looking at the same photographs over and over again. ~Goddess, I feel tired. I'm an old man, but I have never felt old before today.~ He thought. Eventually, one of the generals in the room spoke up. "Great One: with respect, we need a decision." He said, his voice soft and cautious. The Emperor looked up. "I will not leave my people to die at the hands of these swine. We attack." The Emperor said, his voice sounding just as tired as he felt. The general nodded. "I shall obey, Great One. Where would you like for us to attack, and with what forces?" He asked. And then the planning of the attack began.

Michael returned the stare. For all he knew, Ventrus was attempting to intimidate him or see how sincere he was in his beliefs. He wasn't about to let an inferior creature believe otherwise. Eventually, he grew tired of the silence and continued speaking. "Good. I'll order you to be moved into the city palace shortly. I expect you to obey any order given to you by a human while you are there. If you do, I will see to it that you are well treated and well fed. Refuse to do so and you will be punished. It's rather simple. Of course, there is one thing that has to be done beforehand." Michael said. Once again, he knocked on the cell door. The guard opened it. "Bring Doctor Velibor in. Tell him I authorize all of these procedures but will have him quartered if he lets the dragon die." The guard nodded and departed. Michael looked back at Ventrus. "I've just authorised a friend of mine, Doctor Velibor, to remove your wings, reduce the size of your claws, and destroy the organ responsible for your breath attack. You understand, I can't take the risk of you either trying to flee or trying to get revenge on the inhabitants of this city. Were your kind more agreeable, this would not be necessary. The savage nature of your kind forced my hand. Recognize that the blame for this is entirely on your hands and take the blame to heart." Michael said before turning to leave. "I hope the good Doctor decides to use anesthesia this time. The screams from his test subject got rather annoying after a while." He continued before finally leaving the cell.

"Hmm... well then I will be sure not to disappoint, for both of our sakes. Were I a total failure at whatever task was assigned to me... well I doubt that it would reflect well on you, seeing as you are the one who is vouching for me. Plus, I'd like to think that other humans might be given a chance within the ranks of your clan if I am able to prove myself. I have to say that that would be rather nice to have other members of my own race around to interact with. Even if that doesn't happen, I'll still do my best for the sake of your clan. It's the least I can do, after all." Matt said before glancing back to Forlirn.

"Lets go then." Matt said. "We are following you, after all."

((Okay. If I see you in-game, then I'll bring it up. Otherwise, have a good holiday everyone.))

''Then we are more alike than what I thought Umbra. I am still learning of the world myself, I know only what I was able to read back in my home which was not much. Thanks to interactions I am just now starting to learn the faculties of human culture and communication. I am still new to dragons though but, I have learned much thanks to Fol*** and the few Ancients we have meet along the way. But I am still but a child compared to the others in the world despite my knowledge and power. I intend to change that however in time.'' said Rhen with a slight chuckle followed by a heavy sigh.

''I do hope that some of your children survived, both for the sake of balance in the world and for academic curiosity. I want to learn as much as I can about everything so that I can better understand the world. You see, unlike the others of my race, when they are created they gain the knowledge of the previous generation and thus are, as humans say 'up to speed'. But I was and still am an anomaly to my people for I was created out of cycle out of residual magical energy. Because of this, I did not gain the knowledge of the previous generation. But even with that handicap I still press on and move past what could have been, and look at what might be.'' said Rhen. ''I am sorry if I am rambling. I just.....well never mind. If things work out I would be happy to have your company should you take up my offer. Even if I don't get back into the city, I would enjoy the company in my solitude. If anything, we can travel together and look for any of your surviving children if they are out there and both learn more of the world."

In truth Rhen felt a deep connection with Umbra. Mostly because they had both been in isolation from the worlds they had known. The other in the fact that they had similar interests. But perhaps Rhen was thinking too much into things. But then again, there wasn't much time to think with the world at stake.
