Once he had bunkered down in his area of the city, and runners had been dispersed to communicate with other pockets of resistance, Heinrich began to consider just how he would achieve his defensive aim. Even while establishing his defenses, it was painfully obvious that simply standing their ground would not work. The mysterious enemy was smart. Even though several attacks had been easily repelled on their outer defenses, he knew it was only a matter of time until the enemy figured out some way to overwhelm his defensive lines. At the same time, his forces were too weak to even consider a large counterattack. Even if communications were normal, and he was able to coordinate his forces perfectly, it was just not feasible.

Before he could contemplate this further, word reached him that the enemy was launching attacks from within via portals from the heretical world of mages. Fortunately, Heinrich had considered this option. Seeing as the enemy was clearly an atypical foe, he realized that he had to account for more unusual tactics. He began to wonder what he would do, were the roles reversed. Attacking from the other world was cowardly, but also something that could cause his defensive positions to collapse from within. Thus, he had ordered a number of his forces to guard the inner areas of the pocket and set up machine gun and ambush positions. It had paid off tremendously. When the enemy had launched the assault, they were met by heavy fire from virtually every angle. It was a similar situation in many of the other pockets within the city. In pockets where the attackers had caught them completely off guard, the defenders still fought back with a savage level of resistance.

The majority of the attacks were repelled, with the ambushers having been caught in their own ambush. With that out of the way, Heinrich returned to contemplating the situation. His already weakened forces had been further weakened by the surprise attacks (though he took comfort in the knowledge that the losses could have been much worse). He needed support from the other Imperial pockets. But how could he speak with them? Sending more runners was out of the question. It would take too long for messages to be sent back and forth, and there was no guarantee that the runner would ever reach his destination. Despite that, there didn't seem to be much of a choice in the matter.

His advisors proved to be useful for a change when one of them suggested pointing lights towards areas that appeared to be Imperial pockets and communicating with them via Morse Code. Heinrich had to laugh. It was such an insane idea that it might actually work. Spotlights were set up as modified signal lamps; their beams were pointed towards suspected pockets. From there, the signalman communicated by briefly blocking the lamp with things like a plastic cover. It was crude at first, but as time passed, the signals became easier to understand. All the men assigned to the task broadcasted a simple message: IMPERIAL FORCES IN GLARUINDEM, RESPOND TO THIS MESSAGE. A long time passed, but eventually Heinrich received reports of other pockets responding to his message. Communication turned to coded signals. As an example, one message sent read out as: AUNT GERTRUDE MAKES EXCELLANT APPLE PIES. To an outside observer, it would be apparent that there was another meaning to the message, but it would take extensive knowledge of Imperial code to understand the exact meaning of the phrase.

The squadron of aircraft were caught off guard by the attack. Two of the seven aircraft in the squadron were destroyed in the opening attack while the remainder were able to drop flares and chaff in time, thus preventing the locked-on weapons from striking their target. The surviving aircraft used their thermal sensors to lock onto the still unseen targets that had fired at them. Each plane dropped a couple of laser-guided bombs on targets that they detected below them. Once their bombs had been dropped, the squadron split up. Three of the aircraft, piloted by more inexperienced pilots, were to return to base and inform Imperial command of the attack. The remaining two aircraft would push onward, towards Glaruindem, to gather more intelligence on the situation. The hope was that the two experienced pilots would be able to travel to the city and back through the clearly hostile mountains. At the very least, their cameras would hopefully transmit enough data back towards the Imperium for the higher-ups to get a better understanding of what was going on.

((I hope that none of the above posts would be considered god modding or powerplaying. Though I do roleplay on other websites, I've never been in a position where multiple players were in command of tens of thousands of forces. Thus, this whole battle is a new experience for me.))

Michael chuckled. "I suppose you wouldn't know who I am. I certainly know who you are, however. I have read a lot about you, Ventrus. Don't get me wrong, I haven't paid much attention to the nonsense filling the newspapers about you being some sort of serial killer. Only a fool would look at you and think that you possibly were able to kill dozens of your fellow... well I'll use the word kin even though I get the feeling that you don't view your fellow lizards as being kin, do you?" He nodded to a nearby guard, who opened the cell door for him. Stepping inside, he confidently approached the dragon. Even if the stories were untrue, the dragon was in such a pathetic state that he had nothing to fear from it. "There was only one lizard that ever really mattered to you, yes? The one called Draxta? Your records in city hall indicate that you were married to her. Or should I say that she was your mate? I've never really bothered to pay attention to the terms your kind uses. Anyway, you fascinate me, Ventrus. You really do. You understand the way things are, and I respect that. I want to talk to you, but I will only talk to you if you show me the respect of looking me in the eye. Get up and look at me... now." Michael said, firmly.

''I see. In a way they once were a lot like my people, the Watchers. We have amassed a wealth of knowledge in our existence but have kept it to ourselves and hidden from the outside world. We have improved that knowledge through experimentation but with limits to prevent harm not only to ourselves but to the world around us.'' commented Rhen solemnly to Umbra.

It was a bit odd to Rhen to have an ancient perched on his shoulder. But in a way he found it a bit amusing. It was almost like having a pet that was centuries old and had a high intellect. Though Rhen knew better than to think of Umbra in such a menial perspective. In fact Rhen greatly respected Umbra despite his current condition. Rhen began to think on a few things as they approached the Soulbound.

~Perhaps if there is not a way to bring the Seekers back to their former selves, maybe Umbra could find a new home among the Watchers. From what Umbra has told me, the Seekers were once much like us in a way. Perhaps Umbra may find being around beings of a similar manner comforting. Then again perhaps I should ask him before I make choices for him.~ thought Rhen.

Matt nodded. "It would make sense, wouldn't it? The rest of the dragons in the Soulbound have fur right? If they were created by Soul, then it would make sense for her to actually have fur as well. Perhaps the rose illusion is to provide a more welcoming appearance for newcomers to her clan. A mountain of roses is certainly more appealing to look at then a mountain of fur, after all." He said to Caelidorus, before turning back to Forlirn.

"We'll try to keep our business quick then. I can't imagine that the ritual would take more then a day to complete, though I admit that I don't exactly know enough to make an informed judgment. If it sounds like it'll take longer then a day or two, then I am okay with coming back at some later point to complete the ritual. Having this individual be killed would likely remove any possibility of stopping what is to come, after all. He is more important then this ritual." Matt said.

An unsuccessful assault. Quite surprising from an enemy who had never fought on two fronts in such a manner before, but Argentus was hardly a fool enough to stubbornly continue a vain assault, ending the attack rapidly where the enemy was far too prepared to be routed. Which meant it would be necessary to shift to the next plan of assault while preparing the last-resort tactic for destroying the remaining forces with minimal loss. With any luck Caelidorus would never learn of this; that dragon would chide him for wasting the element of surprise so carelessly. However, the attack had revealed the positioning of the Imperial forces, which would be quite useful for the next attack. They would hardly have time to reposition before it began; the rapidly shifting attack style of the Tempests would leave no more than a minute between assaults. Centuries of war made for highly adaptable soldiers, after all.

The forces within the city would begin a coordinated attack on the defending Imperial forces roughly in tandum with the initial attack through the portals, alternating heavy gunfire with barrages of Tempest lightning, the experimental weapons the dragons wore capable of piercing solid steel several feet thick. This attack would put heavy pressure on the Imperial forces to focus on the surrounding city forces unless they wished to risk heavy losses. The force would not back down despite the failure to rout the enemy, leaving the Imperial forces with little to no time to predict the next Tempest assault. The portals would remain despite soldiers no longer streaming out from them, offering just about a minute of respite from the internal attack. A rather chaotic strategem followed, countless small portals opening in unison throughout the areas of resistance. Tempests streamed from these portals, rapidly striking with blasts of lightning and quick sweeps of their claws before vanishing into different portals.

Few dragons remained on Neuva for more than ten seconds, although the influx of attacking dragons did not cease. The portals did not remain constant either; after the first wave opened, they began opening and closing seemingly at random, making the attacking dragons far more difficult to predict. While the attack seemed haphazard and likely to collapse easily, it was in fact highly coordinated and carefully executed, the Tempests' centuries of fighting alongside one another allowing them to fight in unison despite appearing to not communicate with one another.

More Tempest began gathering within the undercity, accompanied by noncombatant soldiers. With the locations of resistance fairly well-known by now, they began planting charges beneath the areas, planning to bury the troops in rubble if they could not break their resistance without heavy losses.

Nobody among the defending forces had the knowledge to break the coded messages, none bothering to attempt doing so. It was fairly obvious what the purpose of the signals were, although little could actually be done with them on the defending end. However, it did not take long for the defending force to begin using the signals to pinpoint Imperial-held locations. More specifically, they were attempting to locate any areas they had not yet located, expecting the commanding officer to be hidden somewhere forces were not concentrated to avoid death by a stray bullet.

The aircraft was almost immediately met with a synchronized barrage of lightning bolts after the weapons failed, the sky lighting up with an ear-splitting crack as hundreds of Tempests unleashed their breath weapons in unison in an attack far more deadly than the initial strike. Moments later many of the Tempests took to the air to attack the remaining aircraft directly, roughly a dozen per aircraft attempting to intercept the squadron before it could escape. It was quite evident the squadron was severely outgunned.
The blockading force had hoped to keep draconic involvement in Glaruindem a secret. When the quick strike failed to destroy the entire squadron, it was decided allowing the Imperium to discover the full situation in Glaruindem was not worth hiding the Tempest involvement over.

((I honestly couldn't say. I've never roleplayed anything on this scale before.))

"I would prefer you do not speak of her," Ventrus spoke with the faintest twinge of emotion at the mention of his mate. Otherwise the dragon remained both still and silent, only his eyes moving as he regarded Michael. Or, more accurately, his legs, the dragon's head remaining on the floor for the duration of the conversation. Silence would follow for a few moments, soon broken by a faint clinking of chains as Ventrus shifted about. Eventually the dragon lifted his head and part of his neck up the the portion encircled by the massive collar clamped around it.
"I am incapable of doing so. I lack the strength to lift such shackles," Ventrus stated blankly. While he did not stand (and indeed appeared incapable of doing so), he did make eye contact with Michael.
