"Well, you need not worry about me Rhen. I've brought my sword with me and I am aware in how to use it in battle." Matt said, pulling up a portion of his coat to reveal the hilt of a sword, the rest of it hidden within a plain sheath. The hilt of the sword was rather plain. The only remarkable aspect of the hilt was a series of character from an ancient human writing system. Matt forced the coat down again and over the sword. "A little souvenir from my slayer days. The blade is nothing special, but it has saved my life more than once."

"That would make sense. There's no way she could avoid detection by pure luck alone. Anyway, I have no real knowledge of magic. Back home, knowledge of magic is limited. All that we hear about magic is how evil it is and how the people of Neuva are superior for avoiding the temptation of using it. My point is that I have no way of knowing if a magic user is benevolent or malevolent. If these mountains are a dangerous place to look for help, then I have no idea where we should look. In regards to fish... well I guess we'll have to make due until we find somewhere to trade. But fish aren't going to last us long when you have to split the fish among three giant dragons. I can smoke whatever we don't use, but I believe that we will have to ration out the fish until we get more supplies." Matt said.

"Well... I guess that we have a deal then." Matt said, struggling (and failing) to suppress a grin. "We'll discuss this with Soul when we meet her and decide if this is what we truly want then. It'll take a fair bit to make me change my mind about this though. Goddess, now I am actually looking forward to returning to the Soulbound. I was dreading it up till now, to be entirely honest. I didn't exactly leave on the best note."

"Yes, well believe me when I say that I had no idea about this meeting until about two hours ago. This is just as surprising for me." Michael began, as he withdrew his hand. "I am rather surprised that my friend did not mention me when you were talking to him. I suppose he has his reasons. He and his family are rather secretive by nature. Either that, or perhaps he just assumed that you would decide that I was the most likely candidate to lead this city. Either way, it does not matter. " Michael paused to take the file. He studied the cover, as if doing so would somehow allow him to read what was inside. Gaining nothing, he looked up at the CEO, attempting to study his reaction for some clue about the contents of the file. Finding nothing, he said "Well, I suppose I ought to thank you for entrusting me with this file. I am sure that this will be the beginning of a long and fruitful relationship. I wish you all of the best in the coming days. Until we meet again." Michael bowed his head slightly, did an about-face and left the office.

Outside of the building, he was briefly stopped by two supporters of his who were eager to ask him questions about his plans for the future. Once that was over, he entered his limousine. Michael put his briefcase to the side as the driver rolled down the divider between him and Michael. "Where would you like to go now****. Galano*?" He asked politely. "To the office. There, you will pick up my family and a few valued employees and take them west, to our offices in the Imperium. I will not be joining them at this time." "Very good, sir." The driver said before rolling up the divide. The Limousine left the plaza. Michael stared out the window, watching the streets pass by in order to pass the time. After several minutes, he remembered the file that Mike had given him. Despite his stoic nature, he found that curiosity overcame him. With nothing else to do until he reached the office, Michael opened the file and studied the contents.

''Well then I guess we won't have to worry about Matt being undefended then. I for one will be of more use defending the party on Elune than here. It will be great to get back to my home world where I can tap into magic once again. I feel so bare and useless without it.'' shrugged Rhen when Matt revealed his sword.

''Excuse me if I sound as if I am trampling over your people's views but, magic is not evil. No form of magic is evil in itself as it is simply a tool. Like a hammer or saw used to build a house, magic is only a tool. If used by an evil person or used with evil intent, you cannot blame magic as it is only a tool of the person using it.'' said Rhen turning on his heels to face Matt. ''Think of it this way if you must. A man kills a man with a hammer. Does that make the hammer evil? The hammer cannot control how it is used, the same with magic. While there is no direct way to tell an evil magic user from a good one, think instead how they are using the magic they wield. While not a perfect way to tell, it is better than fearing every form of magic that walks past you.''

With his mind at ease about his fears of his void corruption, Rhen was getting back to his old self. A welcome sight to the rest of the group surely that Rhen's mood was changing.

''If I may inject my input into our food rationing dilemma.....Forlirn, in your other form, how much food must you consume in order to remain in top form and the same for your current form? If your other form needs to consume less, perhaps whenever we eat, you could use your other form to dine and your draconic form only for travel. Depending on your biology, this might be our only solution to the rationing problem Matt is concerned about.'' commented Rhen.

"Aside from some rare cases, magic is neither good nor evil," Umbra agreed, arching his back. "Although some forms are more easily used for evil and others more easily for good. Regardless, it will be difficult to tell the intentions of a magic user provided said mage doesn't outright attempt murdering you. Anima would know best... she's far more up to date on what lies in the mountains."

Caelidorus replied with a toothy grin of his own, his tail twitching slightly. "I really don't think heading back to them would have been all that bad. Considering how old the ancients are I doubt any of us could really offend her even if we tried. It would be like a hatchling trying to offend an elder."

"As it is a human form, I require little more than a human to sustain myself," Forlirn said, regarding Rhen somewhat oddly. "But I may only assume a different form on Elune and my energy requirements depend on what form I am in. A filling meal in a human form would not provide me with much energy to sustain myself once returning to my actual body."

Within the file seemed to be a log of sorts. Undated and unmarked, several pages in length.

Subject: Ventrus
Alias: None
Age: Presumably 25
Appearance: Blue scales. Lacking right hind leg. Believed to be seven feet long and three feet tall.
History: Family eliminated at age of 3. Subject captured and held in Site E for two years, subject losing right hind leg in process of capturing. Subject #29528091 placed in subject's cell shortly after. Subject #29528091 escaped with subject within three days; subject separated from Subject #29528091 hours later during ambush. Subject has remained outside of our control ever since. Important to note subject views Subject #29528091 as brother.
Overview: Subject relatively ordinary: no special methods used. Subject's loss of leg to be considered for use on Subject #35782104. Subject's escape of little importance; subject to be recaptured if encountered; no resources to be directed at subject. Preference for subject to be captured for potential as bait for recapturing and killing Subject #29528091. Debate exists on project enrollment.

Log 1
Presumed age: 63
Appearance: Changed only with age, dimensions uncertain.
Overview: Subject recaptured near Site E. Subject displays no memory of Site E. Subject not believed to have encountered Subject #29528091 before death by old age. Despite previous trauma, Subject displays hesitant affection toward humans. Subject identity tentatively confirmed via genetic signature; technological progress too slow due to societal perception to conclusively identify subjects with genetic signture at current date. Blood to be stored until advanced technology not considered a form of witchcraft.
Enrollment: Subject will initiate conditioning project. Ideally subject will become fully subservient to mankind. Project may reveal useful aspects of draconic psychology. Amniesiacs administered, subject released near town near Site E.

Log 2
Presumed age: 67
Appearance: Unchanged
Overview: Project met with success to date. Subject coexists among humans peacefully with minor conditioning from agents under the guise of ordinary citizens. Effects of trauma will be next studied.

Log 3
Presumed age: 68
Overview: Trauma introduced early due to fire caused by now-executed human arsonists. Fire targeted Subject's home, presumedly as protest to draconic freedom allowed within town near Site E. Despite personally witnessing slow deaths of four human occupants and one draconic occupant, Subject remains friendly to humans. Long-term observation of subject proposed.

Log 4
Presumed age: 77
Overview: Project has been limited to observation and attempts to introduce dependency into Subject due to recent draconic-rights movements in the town-turned-city. Nevertheless, project has met with limited success as Subject has grown reliant on human companionship. Testing to continue when city is secured.

Log 5
Presumed age: 113
Appearance: Young adult, otherwise unchanged
Overview: Project to continue beyond observation as city is well-secured of current date. Specialized prothestic has been provided to Subject via a local surgeon u*nassociated with the organization. Subject now heavily dependent on humankind and appears ingratiated to humankind as a result. Subject convinced to aid in manual labor and suspected to be courting a non-subject dragon near Site E.

Log 6
Presumed age: 115
Overview: Subject heavily integrated into city society. Despite recent draconic equal rights acts, Subject displays signs suggesting Subject regards itself as inferior to humankind. Conditioning has likely been successful and shall continue. Subject has fathered a single hatchling; hatchling will be inflicted with incurable, nonfatal illness to increase Subject's dependence. Full genetic signature confirms Subject's identity is as suspected.

Log 7
Presumed age: 126
Overview: Subject has become highly withdrawn due to death of the surgeon. Surgeon was found to be a serial killer of dragons and presumedly murdered by an escaped victim. Subject was close to the surgeon and now exhibits classical signs of depression. Subject has abandoned Subject's manual labor job and rarely exits Subject's burrow outside of Site E. Measures are to be taken to force Subject back into city society.

Log 8
Presumed age: 127
Overview: Subject's mate and child have been terminated. Subject has abandoned burrow and returned to city, remaining withdrawn but displaying extreme subservience to humankind. Due to trauma Subject's conditioning must be implemented more directly.

Log 9
Presumed age: 127
Overview: Subject imprisoned indefinitely due to falsified evidence surrounding the surgeon's murders. Subject shows complete disinterest in dragonkind and complete subservience to humankind. Subject to remain imprisoned under false charges until possible use determined, perhaps for enslavement project.

Appendum: City likely to be soon annexed by nearby empire and all draconic residents expected to be executed, including imprisoned Subject. Advisement may be considered to determine if Subject may be kept alive for project use and/or observation. Project data also suggest Subject would be an optimum candidate if enslavement of captured dragons is to be considered. Observation will continue during city occuptation near Site *. Project will be considered terminated if Subject is executed.

The file ended simply and abruptly.

"I'm sure that you are right, but I still do not trust magic." Matt replied. "Perhaps it has to do with my upbringing, but I still don't want much to do with magic outside of the limited experimentation that I attempted before I met you. At the same time, I won't stop you from approaching magic communities to treat Caelidorus's wound provided, as you said, Soul tells us which communities to approach. I've heard stories of what some of these mages do to their victims. Perhaps they are nothing more then stories, but I do not want to test my luck on that."

"True. They've been alive for... what? Perhaps thousands or even millions of years. I'd be rather shocked if my comments left much of a lasting impact. Still, the rest of her people likely won't feel the same way. I'm not a people person at the best of times so I have to admit that I am not looking forward to dealing with them again. But at the same time, the only way we are going to have this done is if we go back. I'm willing to put up with whatever they throw at me if it means completing this ritual. On that note... do you think we should tell the rest of the group about our plans? I have no qualms with doing so, but I will keep it private if that is what you would rather. I doubt it will come as much of a shock to them since we are clearly very close." Matt whispered

"We should probably get going soon." Matt said. "We know where this strange... disfigured person is right now, but he could move at any time. Considering the present company, I would rather not stay near Imperial borders for very long. How long do you imagine the journey to the area will take?" Matt asked, to no one in particular.

((I can't speak for Nar, but I know that I wouldn't have stuck along as long as I have if you didn't create an interesting world (or should I say worlds?) with a good story and engaging characters. I'm looking forward to seeing where this goes. :) ))

Michael chuckled as he read through the file. "Amazing. I can see why my Lord, the Emperor, chose to ally with this corporation." He muttered, though no one was around to hear him. As he put the papers back within the folder, he considered what the implications of what he had read could be. A thought came to his mind.

~If we can control the dragon species and use them in a form of slavery, then extermination would not be a necessity. For a time, we could permit their species to survive as a slave race. They would do whatever we demanded of them and we would, in return, allow a certain number of them to survive. Hmm... if this 'Ventrus' character is as subservient as he is made out to be, then killing him would be a waste of resources. No doubt that is why the company gave me this folder: to give me second thoughts about complete extermination. There is only one way to find out if what is written here is true, however.~

Pulling out his cell phone, he looked up the number of the cities 'Draconic Penitentiary'. If Ventrus was being held anywhere, it would be there. No where else had the proper facilities to house an incarcerated dragon, after all. He dialed the number for the prison, knowing that his status on the city council would give him greater access to the information he was seeking. "Good morning. I am Michael Galano*, from the City Council." He said, once the call had been answered. "I was hoping you could give me information on one of your inmates. The creatures name is Ventrus. I am told he was imprisoned for the murder of a surgeon. Would you mind telling me more about him?"
