alright let me correct myself... sailing is indeed a skill but you have to do the sailing mini game to level it up

You're wrong. You don't need to do the sailing minigame. You can do build ships and sell them as well. Training that way would be similar to training farming.

Wow nice idea, Jagex. But i am not Pker and was long time not playing Runescape 3 and OSRS. I heard a rumor of sailing. I would like this but more as skiller instead a killer.
Can you make one or two only Sailing pvp theme Server? I would like Sailing, but no PVP at the sea.

ship PvP is optional and restricted into a specific area (like normal pvp is restricted to the wildy).

Ah optional , ok. :) I was playing a boat game earlier, there i had no chance
because always was attacked and sunk. This was no fun and i was quit this game after
2 weeks. When OSRS Sailing is with one person boat and exploring to play , sounds
real good. :)

The main problem seems to be the building part... Already caused quite a bit of controversy by what I've read.

Being Sailing a skill, I would expect xp to be gained from...
SAILING
. Getting xp for building the ship may create another way to level the skill, but it may mess up with so many things. Using the same materials as Construction and Smithing may be a problem to which I don't really see a good solution. Selling ships don't sound very good either.

What I think: Each type of ship should be built once, then used to explore the sea. Building would yield a fair bit of cons, smith and craft xp, but not too much. Maybe some Sailing xp too, assuming it's only on the first time each ship is built. Sailing itself should be trained by... sailing. As the skill will have so many possibilities, the different training methods could be different ways of sailing, for example: slowly, without randoms, pretty afkable with low xp rates, and as complexity increases so does the xp rates. Repairing the ship at sea could give sailing xp though, and could be a way to get the semi-AFK, slow xp.

This way, Sailing would require some equipment and supplies, but not ridiculous amounts to compete with cons. Those who which would also be able to opt to different methods of training, and the full complexity of the skill will offer the best xp, rewards, and fun.

EDIT: Just a new thought: ships could not only require repairs if they are damaged somehow while out on the sea, but can also be wrecked/lost (if certain kinds of randoms are "enabled" by the player). Then they could be recovered by paying an ok amount of gp, depending on the ship, to an NPC at the ports. Seems like a good money sink, and adds a risk to the more rewarding sails.

JAGEX YOU ARE DOING THIS ALL WRONG!![
PLEASE READ THIS!

Add 2 skills: Sailing and Cannoneering.

Add a crew interface: When one joins another person's boat , they will join their crew and have a separate chat box just like a clan chat.

Ships can be purchased with GP, GOOD GP SINK, (Ships could be: Sloop, Galleon, Frigate, War Galleon, War Frigate, etc) , however, you will need to level up your sailing level by captaining the helm and sinking ships in PVP or NPC boats. If you are alone captaining your ship you can use *FKeys to shoot your cannon at enemy ships.

There should be no such thing as "Ship building" this is a complete and utter waste of time. The main focus should be the "Sailing" aspect. One should be able to level this up by sinking ships which is the real enjoyment of this skill. Ship building will completely ruin this skill because it will act as a barrier between the Rich and the Poor. Which is exactly what Construction is. Construction does not require any skill but only money to prove that you trained it.

Also, with higher sailing levels you can customize your ship's masts , etc. With higher leveling you can purchase more expensive boats. With higher leveling you can crew more people in your ship. With higher leveling you can dock at different ports.

Cannoneering skill: Can be trained by sinking ships with a cannon on your boat or a friend's boat in PVP or PVM (NPC Boats)

As you level your cannoneering you gain access to better cannonballs.
E.G. steel, dragon, crystal, chain shots, etc.

If you are riding alone you can run around on your boat and control the helm and stop the boat whenever and shoot your cannons to level up your cannoneering.

Sailing the high seas should be the
MAIN FOCUS, NOT SHIP BUILDING!!

I HAVE MORE INFORMATION REGARDING THIS - PLEASE MESSAGE ME! THIS IS IMPORTANT!

I fully support sailing, but like other users here, sailing xp should mainly be gained from sailing ships, not building them, I also believe that teams should have the best xp rates, soloers can train sailing too, but team sailing is the best in terms of xp gain, combine this with little to no AFK'ibility, and you've got a skill that could bring a game together.
