Police
Policia
The Five-o
The Old Bill
The Rozzers

...whatever you want to call them...

We notice that they are very differently equipped in the US compared to the UK.

In the UK, typically the most offensive equipment an ordinary copper will have is CS Spray. This is used to disorientate a suspect / criminal.

In the US, instead they will have a firearm.

In the UK, you will see some police officers on horses at special events. In the US I'm not sure how often this is seen?

In the UK, there are a variety of different police groups. At large gatherings for example, the TSG will be out and about doing their thing. In the US there may be similar groups and divisions, although I'm not so sure.

The encounters with officers in the UK and US are arguably vastly different.

Some of the differences are covered in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kb2B2adsXlM

What are your opinions on the policing styles, equipment and effectiveness of the two types of police? Feel free to also refer to other forces from other nations too rather than just these two if you wish and discuss how they are equipped, techniques etc.

Police forces in the US are in effect militias, with military style equipment.

Police forces in the UK generally remember that they are civilians.

Our Coppers don't need guns in most situations since none of us civilians have them.
Except for loonies/terrorists/some members of drug gangs and the like, but these people are very, very much in the minority.

When such folk seek to cause mayhem we do have Units which are trained and armed with guns to deal with isolated incidents.

I wouldn't like to live in a society where people were shooting each other, and being shot at in retaliation, for such things as an argument in a grocery store or their voting preference.

simply put

uk no guns for police because they arent needed on regular patrol (only in rare cases and that does happen). why? because the population is not holding guns. or atleast its a case of not anyone can hold a gun

US needs a gun for their protection. otherwise its not a fair situation the gun is going to win in 99% of situations, and if the public have the right to bare arms, then well thats the problem that requires poilce to be armed to be the same playing field as the public, they are trying to protect.

In the US, they have "community outreach" programs, but they are laughably ineffective. Basically, it is just a way to smooze with cops.

For special events, they direct traffic more or less.

We have several different divisions. We have state boys, county sheriffs, city cops, and occasionally a particular part of the city is wealthy enough to have their own precinct.

The encounters are different because cops inherently view everyone as a threat here, and, ironically, many of us do the same with cops. It isn't a great atmosphere. I would say that policing isn't at all effective here, because we all know that 90% of the time wealth and reputation is what matters far more than whatever crime was actually commited - and where you are also determines the outcome. There are definitely spots to stay away from in every single state I have visited and I believe I am up to 25-30 states now (those spots are usually the "bad" parts of a metropolitan area).
And I swear I'm not going to let her know all the pain I have known

Do English police carry guns in their patrol cars??

I think NZ pretty much has the same gun laws as England??

Here NZ I believe guns are locked away in a box within the police car, before they can take them out, they need to have permission.

Our coppers all wear tasers. At work the year before last this dude was tasered in front of me, the guy dropped. Poor guy didn't deserve this, well they needed to do it as he was quite upset and causing rife, but if it was handled properly it shouldn't have got to the stage it got too.

A while back the police were going to trial wearing guns, because of an out cry from the public it was dropped.

Gun crime in NZ has gone up, specially with gangs. I believe this is the reason for the gun carrying trial which didn't go through.

*I know you said England and American police. It's a good interesting topic, so I wrote about my country which is part of the commonwealth, so technically part of England :P

Some British coppers also carry Tasers (I forgot about that).

But a report in 2019 said that out of a Force of about 123,000 Officers, only 17,000 were armed with these.

Officers are required to complete 18 hours training in order to be licensed to carry this item plus an annual 'refresher' course.

Firearms Officers also can use 'plastic bullets' - statistics for the 2018 period show this method was deployed 43 times in one year. I have no idea of when and why.
