In America it's customary to tip your traffic cop 10% of the fine because departments have started paying them in jelly doughnuts and coffee due to budgetary shortfalls. Though lately those greedy bastards have been giving me the stink eye if I don't give at least 20%.

I can't speak for whatever weird policies the UK has to not arm their public defense officials with firearms, but here in New York, they are absolutely needed. I live in a not so nice area of Brooklyn near a precinct and there are still murders with firearms and other weapons on a semi-regular basis. Cops here need guns or else they're pretty much fish in a barrel waiting to be picked off.

Guess it's just a product of different societies. You know, that Dagoth Ur fellow has got some valid points.

This is not to say that all cops are unarmed. Every so often, news of a police officer firing their weapon will go nationwide - usually because it was seemingly unnecessary to do so.

Clearly, if there were more guns in the general UK population, there would need to be a rethink of how many armed police officers there would need to be. As has been mentioned, a gun can tip the balance the other way.

I think that both countries' police forces should feel proud to work for their particular country. I know that both are regularly under-fire for certain things (can't get political on the forums, so I'll leave that there) - but, if I were a police officer, I'd wear my badge with pride.

The differences in policing style are, largely, a societal thing, I find. The biggest issue, as has been mentioned, is the carrying of firearms. Personally, if there were no guns in the world, I think it would be a better place for everyone - humans and animals alike. However, I do recognise the importance of protection; so, it's a constant vicious circle, unfortunately.

I think they all should feel that they are safely able to carry-out their duty - to uphold relevant laws, and protect all life. In turn, I think they should respect and be grateful for the position they're in! I like Volvos.

Is there a lot of gun violence in England??

Just about every other day someone seems to be getting shot here in NZ. I believe most of its gangs. Gangs are a huge problem in my country. What about England do you have gangs??
If fat means flavour then I'm ******* delicious!

Plastic bullets may hurt a skinny woman like me. But they are like paper airplanes against some really badass guys. My brother was a cop and is a homicide detective now. He's seen guys who were shot with real bullets and still standing.
