Searched a bit on Runelabs and found a suggestion by i Goofy called "Increased Distance Between Towns and Cities". It currently has 0 supporters. If we want this to happen perhaps that should change. Sadly I'm F2P so I can't do it. Part of the

Scaling up the world, as various people have described and suggested in this thread would be a huge project - not only would it require a complete redrawing and designing of the whole world but it would have enormous knock on effects to the balance and economics of the world. As such it is highly unlikely to be something we would work on in the foreseeable future.

It would be a huge project but it shouldn't be dismissed as "too hard". You have to look down the road, sooner rather than later. Its doable and it will pay off.

For this, I for one am willing to forgo updates sans patches for the year of 2017, the more I think about this the more I want it.

I would start by just tripling the length and width of the world map (every square becomes nine squares) then shrinking buildings back to their original size. Basically, I'd imagine that there would be a lot of empty space after the update, which they could fill in slowly.

And yeah, this would be amazing.

I've seen this thread evolve a ton, and I'd love to see the world get big again.

As it stands, even in Members it feels cramped.

The best thing they could do (imo) is release a new continent/area to explore.

I've been thinking that they should just make the Eastern Lands a place. Make players start from scratch (maybe if you're maxed, you get your skills set to 25?), make it an entirely new game but still linked to RuneScape and Gielinor...

TBH, all we really need are new BIG places to explore. The World Gate -KINDA- offers this, but they can't make an area large enough to fulfill true exploration and challenge.

Dare I say they should make a RuneScape offshoot similar to Dark*cape, but like normal RuneScape in the Eastern Lands.

A new continent would definitely allow Jagex to experiment with different distances. Old School is already getting Zeah, so I think we can expect the Eastern Lands in RS3 before we get the scaling up. It would probably make the most sense if the Eastern Lands is given its own section on the World Map just as a means of allowing us to suspend disbelief about the different scales.

I've said this before, but I'll say it again:

While it would be great for a new continent to be added (there are many to choose from that have been promised or hinted at over the years) it doesn't get around the fundamental problem - overcrowding of the F2P area.

Yes a new continent would be great. Yes it could be any scale you like. Yes you could have a real sense of exploration. Yes it would be considerably easier and quicker to make. This is because it isn't constrained by the surrounding area or existing content. But unless this new continent is available to F2P players (which is highly unlikely), any new content that F2P players are going to have access to will still have to be placed in the Lumbridge-Varrock-Falador, area.

The other concern is balancing. There has to be some attraction to this new continent to make players go there, otherwise it will be deemed 'dead content' as soon as players get over the novelty. But add too many attractions, and players will never leave, meaning every other area becomes 'dead content'. (We have seen this to a small extent with the release of the Elf city. The city has become a bristling hive of activity for high level players, but how often do they actually leave and visit other parts of Gielinor?)

One final drawback would be that a large-scale new continent would really highlight the cramped nature of the rest of the map, increasing demand for it to be updated to match.

You make fair points, but that's kind of the idea: to give players (members, of course) an actual new area to explore.

EDIT: And like you said, it would increase the demand for JaGEx to scale up the map. That'd probably make it shoot into their "soon" workload rather than their "a few years out" ideas.

Even if the novelty did wear off, there is the idea that when they add a new continent, your character may or may not be set to a new state, so to speak.

Yes, it doesn't fix the overcrowding of the F2P area, but what would be nice about a new continent is that you -could- make part of it F2P. (With a huge amount of "become a member NOW" popups as JaGEx would most likely do...)

If we make it so you have a different set of skills (meant in the sense that if you go to the continent you'll have to retrain all of your skills, but if you go back to RS you'll remember your stats. {possibly make a sort of fog of confusion around the continent?}) then it could either be A. part of RuneScape or B. an entirely new game version (yes, another offshoot of RuneScape).

To be honest, even if we fix the overcrowded F2P areas and general small scale of the map, we'll still have a lack of new areas to explore on release. I doubt there'd be much between cities beyond new forests, new farmland, and new fields.

Yes, I'd love to see the map scaled up AND get a new continent/Eastern Lands, I'd much rather get the new continent first, even if it took more work.

That is probably true. In the first instance, the spaces between cities would just be filled with cut 'n' paste generic content. But the point is this creates space for other content to be developed in further updates. Space that is rapidly running out.

I added that last comment primarily for those people suggesting adding a new continent as a way of reducing the workload, as this could backfire spectacularly.
