See my above post. It's easier to just implement an upgrade/enhancement system rather than increase the skill-cap, and it's easier for everyone to obtain/achieve since not everyone has literally hundreds of hours to grind to 120.
It would apply to all weapons/armor and could be fun to play with as for the aesthetics when you achieve higher enhancements.
Many other games use that type of system and it works well.
