Can I get a source for this? All sources I've looked at where Mod Pip's (current Jagex executive) talked about the rpg/mmo he said they were one in the same it's just he prefers to use the term rpg for that specific game, but it will be an mmo. Also the rpg in mention they said they liked the destiny-esque style of game. They never said the new rpg was going to be like destiny.
As far as the mmo listed back in 2017 road map for Jagex it's safe to assume the "unannounced mmo" which has been confirmed in production stage development based on past and current job listings on Jagex's website is "runescape remastered." But there's no confirmation whether this mmo will or will not be the action rpg they have been referring to in press interviews which in turn makes it still impossible to say definitively it will not be a diablo-esque style game or a traditional modern day mmo.
Overall point is that we only have what Jagex have said publically (which isn't much) and the job listings that have been put up on their website these past two years which you can only speculate so much about. Only thing we know for sure is that this "unannounced mmo" is being created in unreal engine 4 and is currently in production stage. Even more importantly I'm wondering why it's taking Jagex so long to even release some basic info about this new mmo. We've been waiting for almost 4 years for any shred of news and the only willing information they've given out is that it's a project they're working on. Wish they would throw us a bone.
Unannounced MMO is being developed with Unreal Engine.
The Next Gen ARPG (or if somebody really insist to call it MMO, that's fine) is being developed under UNITY.
I really hope one of those 2 things they are doing is a runescape upgrade. Updated tick system with less spaghetti code would be a godsend. The character model faces and the player owned houses really show the problems.
If its another failed side project like cmon. I know there's that quote if at first you don't succeed try try again, but theres also those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.
"The work being done on these ideas is being carried out by a separate team to the ones which develop RuneScape; there’s no need to worry about us reducing our efforts on our flagship game!"
Yeah yeah that's what they said with OSRS and the microtransaction team. Look forward to 1 update per 2 months, guys! >.<

Still sounds neat, but I am concerned about Jagex's tendency to leap at new projects that get quickly abandoned like FunOrb, that one card game...
its been rather obvious that they did redirect resources lately.. we've had like what.. 9 patch weeks out of the last 12 updates?
I saw there was some confusion regarding whether the upcoming game was an ARPG or an MMO.
Allow me to add to the confusion by citing this:
"Senior Combat Designer:
-Oversee the design of Combat Gameplay Systems for a
new multiplayer Action RPG
game including combat mechanics, weapon design, ability and gear design as well as balance and tuning.

This is Next Gen - An Action RPG, although sometimes Jagex still refers to it as a MMO. Or you may try to call it a MMOARPG but Phil Mansell said it is more like Destiny.
When you see something about Jagex's new unannounced MMO without "Action" mentioned, then more likely it refers to the MMORPG some people called Runescape Remastered.

I'm going to go ahead and bump this. It's been really quiet as of late and there hasn't been any new news in regards to the new projects jagex has been working on. Only news there has been is jagex is hiring a bunch of new leadership for these new projects. I honestly was hoping we'd get some news about it at last runefest, but we didn't. And considering this year's runefest has been cancelled I'm worried we may not hear anything about this until late 2021. It's been almost 4 years since runescape remastered was teased and we haven't heard anything since.

I hope it doesn't flop. Jagex does not have the greatest track record when it comes to projects outside of Runescape. But it seems they are pouring lots of money, experienced devs, and industry leadership into this one.
