I logged in today, intrigued about what the battle pass may hold, while verifying the ~20% necro xp nerf came into effect.
Then I took a look around the battle pass... 3 challenges, 3 lamps, ~77k xp for slayer total. Equivalent of a little more than 1 of yesterday's slayer challenges without using vis wax. Looked at the cosmetic rewards and noticed how... simplistic, basic, in design many feel. Having some plain items isn't objectively a bad thing, but as a "Huge" update, "a better, more rewarding Runescape"? I'm not sure to whom it is better or more rewarding, but it is definitely not to the players.
Reading the graphic posted with today's update stating, "Runescape's new bigger & better battle pass" feels like it can only ring true if one assumes it to mean it's bigger and better than any previous Runescape battle pass (because Runescape has never formally had a battle pass).
I want to emphasize - this is not to say the content released is objectively poorly done by design team or devs. There is a place for subtler, plain rewards, but to sell this in words as bigger, better, more rewarding? It feels insulting that Jagex believes the community will take smaller, lesser, as bigger and better simply because Jagex promotes it as such.
This update, truly, feels like I am observing an injured company trying to pull the most from its players through the least output possible. It feels like designers may have been given less resources, while financial and marketing teams were told to make it sound A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. When the two collide in one update, the people will notice.
I love this game, oft returning every few months or years across nearly two decades no matter where life goes, and it hurts my heart to see this was an agreed upon direction.
I think that's enough for now. Maybe we'll try again in few years.
