I've learned that my expectations for the average person, which I had thought were low enough to trip over, are actually way too high. But on the flip side, the ones who manage to meet them are even more deserving of respect than I had originally believed.

You're not the only one...

Which one do you prefer?

I've learned a hell of a lot from Runescape over the years. Some useful and some not so useful.
one time it actually helped me in school.

Metallurgy
- I learned that Bronze is an alloy of copper and tin, and also that steel is not a different type of metal but rather just a refined iron. many years ago when I was in school, a science teacher asked which metals bronze alloy was comprised of, and my hand shot up cause I was a noob in runescape making bronze daggers lol.

Trust
- Unfortunately Runescape has taught me not to trust people. I've seen so many scammers, lurers, skull trickers, baiters, trolls, merchers, gamblers... you name it lol. Every other week I see some sad person talk about getting hacked or ripped off for millions of GP and rares.. The runescape community is surprisingly cut throat for such a seemingly whimsical fantasy game.
over the years I've become jaded, and realized that other people are always looking for an opportunity to get something from someone else.

life isn't fair
- Another sad lesson runescape has taught me is that life isn't fair. Sometimes you're the person who kills a boss and gets the zillion GP drop first try. and sometimes you spend weeks killing the boss and give up empty handed.
Real life is very similar, and I suppose that runescape primed me for the harsh reality of adulthood, since I began playing as a teen, and now I'm a grown woman.
(I also suffer from a learning disability, and I live in a state that does not provide welfare for people with disabilities, so I know how hard things can be! :O )

Culture!
- Runescape has opened my eyes to a lot of culture that I was previously ignorant of. The story of king arthur, Romeo and juliet.
Many of the quests and locations in runescape are inspired by great works of literature, that I wouldn't have been introduced to without the game.

Patience, if you put in enough time, you'll get whatever levels or 'things' you want in game (with very few exceptions). Make a plan and stick to it, be consistent, everything is a matter of time and effort. Don't compete with people whose free time doesn't match your own.

Fortitude, to deal with the amount of idiots this game has, and that sometimes I am the idiot, lol. Don't let people bother you, if they're 'objectively wrong' about something then someone else will call them out on it, it doesn't have to be you. If 2+2 is 4 don't argue with someone that thinks its 3. Let someone else deal with them.

Also, I've realised it's fine to not know things. Sometimes ignorance is bliss. I've gotten by in this game with minimal knowledge of it and I honestly like it that way. There is no rush, everything is eventual, just put in the time (if you've got it spare) and enjoy the climb!

Finally, quit when the game stops being fun, if it's not fun to you then the game loses it's purpose. It's fine to take breaks and return later, it's not going anywhere. Don't get caught up in the rat race. Play at your own pace. Ignore the 'exp waste' propaganda! it's not healthy.

...

I agree with the trust thing above, but I wouldn't blame Rs for that, it's just a product of the times we're living in. Postmodernism is characterized by broad skepticism, subjectivism, or relativism; a general suspicion of reason; and an acute sensitivity to the role of ideology in asserting and maintaining political and economic power. *adjusts monocle* cheers Britannica.

I've been scammed a few times, but after the first one its 'shame on me' lol. So when it does happen I don't let it bother me. A good life lesson, don't give what you're not willing to lose.

...

Another 'lesson' learnt from RS - every now and then I come across a player that genuinely needs help (not fake / scamming) and it feels good to assist. I feel like I've become more generous with my time in RL because of that, so ty.

I have learned to distinguish the stark difference between the real world and virtual worlds.

Issues in the real worlds must be dealt with through real world processes. No pixel people should think just because they take up virtual identities in the virtual worlds they are protected from all real world sequences from what they have done in the virtual worlds.

We should have also learned natural selection guides all video games too.

When Jagex see other games doing FSW and live events. They learned and do FSW and live events and RS3 borrowed their ideas.

When OSRS see RS3 getting tangible results following the other games with live events, achievements, D&D and such, they follow the foosteps and put Shooting Stars, Soul Wars, Nex and the likes, and then achievements they perhaps didn't previously planned in their supposedly vanilla OSRS FSW.

Charles Darwin is always right. Players go for what the general interests are, not where they are disinterested, and smart businesses have to follow where the unstoppable forces of massive public trends guide them to the promised land.

Educated consumers will only pay for quality of a product, games are no exception. Games still living and prospering after 20 years like RS3 all come with great persistent content that consumers are happy to pay for because they are entertainment.
