Online Players are just a snapshot of our total actual playerbase - 8 million active players and 1.1 million membership as I obtained from the last available Jagex and Fukong Interactive financial reports. These numbers are audited and presented to real governments and securities exchanges like the UK Companies House and Shanghai Stock Exchanges and therefore should be the, and only the, official real numbers of players.
Each of RS3 and OSRS has more than just "80 to 100 thousand players". "Online Players" of a game at a speciific time is absolutely not the actual players that game has, and different games have different ways (or even different definitions) to display "online players", and 99.99999% of the time aren't remotely comparable.
Besides, there is some question regarding the Runescape API player_count not working for a long time, so there is at least a chance even the "Online Players" counts on both the RS3 and OSRS websites may not even be reflecting the actual "Online Players", let alone real player counts real world governments, stock exchanges and consumers recognized.
That said, no. The "Online Players" OP and the other user mentioned on all kinds of Jagex and non-Jagex websites of both RS3 and OSRS aren't real numbers of each game's actual players count, and far, far, far from the real numbers, and conclusively so.
