i was just recently muted on the runescape discord server because i brought this topic in the general discussion.

the entire conversation was about the recent update of the removal of forum, no fighting or disruption on the server were seen, but apparently one of the moderators did not like to continued conversation and decided to shut it down and ofc getting me muted right after.

how is this going to be the main HQ of runescape communication if we do not have the slightest freedom of speech, when it is in the communication manners and respecting the runescape and server rules?

Not only the conversation was stopped by one of the server moderators when no one else technically complained in the chat about it, which makes it obvious it was a personal decision rather than a professional group decision, but also i was muted for a whole day because i send 1 more sentence replying to the moderator right after his request to shut it down.

and the worst part, he continues with a conversation that is not even related to the game, more of an offtopic real life thing, which is kind of odd to be honest, prioritising offtopic thing rather than the game matter.

please keep in mind, this had happened multiple times, to me and to other players where their general discussion gets stopped because it took too long or was not liked by the staff.

if the general discussion was made to discuss topics, why do you stop them? to start a different topic, especially when there are people still discussing that particular topic.

so hypothetically if the runescape discord is going to become the new forum for us, all our future update discussion, feedbacks, recent update discussions, general discussions will be monitored by staff that can close it whenever they feel like it.

While in the runescape forum we get the freedom to make our threads, discuss a topic or simply join a different one.
The only thing that gets removed is when something is offtopic, breaking the forum communication rules or producing toxicness / fighting.
with the post staying active aslong as people are still discussing it until it becomes discarded which by default gets deleted after a particular amount of time.

now in my opinion, i do not support the removal of the forum at all, unless there will be a change in the runescape discord staff controle or a different discord server controlled and monitored by the forum mods / jmods themselves.

but overall i would still prefere the game own website, rather than a third party platform which can shutdown anytime without jagex getting the ability to do anything about it.
not to mention the huge risk that would come with as people can privately message others just by searching the server which could go into bad matters. which is one of the main reasons there is a big amount of players refusing to use discord period.

unfortunately i don't see jagex rethinking his decision at this point, so the only thing we could do is watch as everything goes into havoc.

All you've demonstrated with your reply is a narrow-minded perspective, failing to grasp the essence of my argument. The mention of gender identity was not arbitrary but a deliberate example to highlight the excessive moderation practices on platforms like Reddit and Discord, something often referrred to as 'Discord Mod syndrome'. This term isn't just a casual remark. It points to a significant issue where moderators, perhaps emboldened by their authority, excessively control and limit discussions, even those that are respectful and constructive.

My point was never about gender identity but about the broader context of how certain topics, even those discussed in a supportive or neutral tone, are being stifled under the guise of moderation. This isn't just about individual opinions but the overall health of a discussion platform. When moderation becomes overbearing, it doesn't just silence one voice but creates a chilling effect that stops open and honest discourse. This isn't conducive to a thriving, dynamic community..... it leads to an echo chamber where only select viewpoints are allowed, and that's a disservice to everyone.

There's a distinction between maintaining a respectful discussion space and imposing restrictive controls that border on censorship. Yes, moderation is necessary to keep conversations civil, but it should not be so heavy-handed that it prevents members from expressing diverse viewpoints. The essence of a vibrant community lies in its ability to entertain a variety of perspectives, fostering understanding and growth.

It's pretty simple. It's a problem that is easily highlighted here in this thread, that we can discuss this here, and have always been able to discuss this here on the RSOF, but there would be no chance at all that this conversation would go on, both on Reddit and Discord.

This issue came apperent to me when my posts about SIMPLE THINGS like MTX etc, were shut down instantly, but would not have been shut down here at all.

So if you think about the bigger, more sensentive topics like when those who wanted to discuss the latest quest that was heavily focused on gender identity, were shut down instantly on these other platforms... where is anyone going to be able to discuss such things? Is the only way now to cry out to Jagex is by making a moving YouTube video that gets attention?

Yes, I too think this is a mistake or, it is what they want going into the future. If the latter is the case, I hope it does not bite them in the butt. They are losing a large enough loyal community of voices for their game which in turn at some point may not stick around to play and pay anymore.

I tried discord, it is chaotic and well, stupid. And...I have too much self respect to log on to reddit or X. If I am not able to find the answers to issues that I may be having in game, I'm toast without the jam. I have survived thanks to Wiki and very kind players in the forums , whom have answered my questions.

Thanks for the memories Posters!

Is it time to close or time to improve the format of the forums and encourage people to come back?

I find Discord, in general, a disjointed mess of competing servers.

This. Very much so.

NO GAME should EVER be using other people's services/social media to promote their own products other than advertising. It's seriously FKN stupid, both from a logistics standpoint and a business one.

It's like saying "we don't believe in our own products, so let's use Reddit, Youtube, and other platforms to host our content, which they at anytime in the future could remove, block or lose, exploit, etc at their whim". It's just IRRESPONSIBLE LAZINESS.
Oh geez, I have come here as I do one last explore of the forums before we lose them forever, and I come across this comment from almost 12 months ago which is almost identical in tone to every other comment that has been posted since the announcement two days ago.

I may have to quote this comment elsewhere as I find it rather amusing that the feelings players have now are not simply a reaction to the news.

Also, how does jagex plan to address permanent bans on these platforms? Since we're at the mercy of (often totalitarian) rules and regulations on third party sites, what if we can't reach out to the support team and talk to the community via reddit or discord?

So...here's the funny thing about that...for Reddit at least.

Jagex cannot (as per Reddit policy) have a single say in how that platform is moderated, what content is displayed, etc. So...if you're permed there, you're out of luck.

---

Which is the issue I have with Reddit....the hive mind mentality fed by the upvote/downvote system, and the fact the moderators are not guided by the company which they're creating a community for. Your opinion is not equal there...unlike here where there's no method to force posts to the limelight or downvote to oblivion.

And due to how moderation works there, people can go quite a while without noticing their content was moderated, because it's only marked as such to everyone else. Which allows for bad behavior to continue, rather than removing it and people knowing its removed. (which is why people think there's less moderation, even though content gets moderated).

An official communications path should -ONLY- be performed at a location which that companies directly manages. Here on the forums, Jagex controls the content. Jagex, if they actually used these boards, they can see every post and every thread. It's not something dictated by the masses, except by recent posts/bumps, controlled by participation rather than incorrectly using the upvote/downvote system.

---

Discord, is a giant mess for anything above a couple hundred people. Linear chat is horrendous for discussion, it wasn't designed for companies to use...they try, its bad. It's a hangout platform, not a feedback platform.
Can I turn in a paper without citing all sources?

I wish I could express just how much I agree. Discord SUCKS for discussion (it's alright for coordinating in-game events or streaming for friends, though). Reddit is a toxic cesspit that could rot in hell and still not receive what it deserves. As for Twitter, it's fine for brief and casual chat about the game but it certainly ain't suited for discussion.

Either Jagex creates a new RSOF (which wouldn't be hard AT ALL, just spin up something like SMF which would take a single person a single day to get up and running) or they doom this game to becoming even worse than it already is. I'm a 20-year vet of this game and I completely refuse to create a Reddit account to engage with this community. I also refuse to spend more time on the spyware that is Discord just to read a never-ending scroll of text.

Forums were MADE for discussions, folks. The internet was a billion times more pleasant back when people argued their differences in long-form posts on decentralized forums rather than on social networks, chat apps and the centralized dung heap that is Reddit.
