That said, IF this was implemented there are three major points we must discuss:

1. Reasonable period of absence

- I think this should be at least a year if the inactive leader is p2p; i'd be ok with 6 months if the leader was f2p.

2. Adequate notice to the inactive leader

- There is gotta be some new system to warn the Clan Owner; I want a text message sent to my phone, an email and a big pop up warning the next time I login.

3. Protect the interests of the inactive leader should he return

- I want the name of the clan locked. This is one thing I promised my clan's founder I would never change when I inherited my clan and I never want anyone to change it.
- I don't want to lose my clan owner rank; you can add an acting owner rank for the new owner of the clan giving him the additional permissions, but leaving me with the ability to regain control if I return.
- I liked Lucine's idea of an Heir Apparent and perhaps setup some kind of line of succession I can modify.

Perhaps, like a Terms and Condition, there could be some form of a waiver process that if Player A
(the clan leader)
isn't online for
X
amount of days, then you could have the second in command take charge of the clan. Most notable, Player B.

Maybe like a list of names of people who are allowed to take care of the leadership responsibility might be ideal.

But I feel I might have confused some readers so I would agree with Mod Matthe with how leaders shouldn't be removed. That's my thoughts :)

If they are inactive i doubt trying to get a message to them would work lol, beiong able to contact them wouldnt result in having to remove them for inactivity.

I guess that's the point of adequate notice. Most of my Clanmates have me on Skype and some of them have my phone number, so the times I've been inactive they've been able to stay in touch with me. But I imagine some people have that information private given Jagex's Asking for or providing contact information rule. ;)

I'm not entirely sure what you mean with the automated system?

I have a friend who was telling me that their clan leader has left the game and there's nothing they can do. If an automated system were put into place, would it have to be a specific length of time of inactivity?

Some people log in periodically to check rs for 5 minutes or so but then log off again for another few weeks/months etc. If that were the case and a clan leader were to do so but not actively play the game, that would hold a clan in limbo on a permanent basis.

I do like the idea of a vote but again how would it actually be implemented if the leader logs in periodically?
Having people above a certain rank for say 3 months +, so that new players can't influence a decision would be great. Kinda like the citadel capping period.

My clan is in this spot atm. As far as I know he hasn't logged in for about a yr. So being able use the new features would be great.

However instead of trying to remove/demote the inactive owners and jagex trying to pick one of the multiple deputy owners to promote up couldn't you just give all possible permissions to the deputy owner rank for there rank? They wouldn't have the owner title or any owner only abilities, but the clan could then function and use all the features.

For example this latest update. Without a owner to give permissions we can't use the new feature. However since as a deputy owner the option to use it is there it would be unlocked since our owner is inactive.

This would allow the owner to keep his rank/title should he return, keep jagex from having to get into clan business by picking a new owner, and unlocks the options/abilities for the clan to use.

I like the idea.. but I don't agree with it, the reason for the leader being inactive could be due to hospitalization or in my case going on active duty in their countries military. Yes I know that with the second option they would be able to de-rank them-self before leaving but they might not want to for some reason. It would be much more efficient to just create a new rank that has the powers of acting leader. One limitation for putting it into effect might be 1 month or so of leader not logging in would send a message to all current deputy owners. They in turn would hold a vote of some sort to determine who becomes the acting leader. This rank would only be able to be obtained with 100% agreement and can only be from a deputy. Just my opinion don't rage at me if you don't like it..

There are definitely multiple sides to this idea, but personally I like it. I assume that a lot of time and thought would go into something like this, so I feel like we could probably trust it to do its job well by the time it is put in, if that's the case :) .

For some clans, having an active leader/owner is more important than others, but I can relate to the concerns from established clans that have been left a little stranded by a leader quitting without handing over leadership of the clan, because for them the leader may play a more important role than some other clans.

I can relate to several of the points made by other people so far regarding the difficulty in making an automated system to do this that works for everyone, but it sounds like this is just the idea-phase so far. I definitely look forward to hearing updates and more details on how it would be done. :)

I support the idea, but there are so many things to take into consideration. Here are some thoughts:

After 6 months of inactivity the owner should not be kicked

The removed owner should be notified before and after they are removed from power. After the owner is removed they should be allowed for an limited amount of time (lets say 2 weeks) to be reinstated as owner should they log in; after this time has expired they will not be able to reclaim it.

The former owner should not be able to be kicked by a new owner that gained ownership by means of his/her inactivity (the replaced owner could not be kicked by his or her replacer but could be kicked by the owner that follows the replacer)
However, this could be an issue if the replaced owner comes back and is not happy about being removed from power and causes trouble in the clan chat.

The former owner's rank could be adjusted to whatever the new owner sees fit once the 2 week period of reclamation has past.

In order to decide who should replace the owner, there should be a prompt that appears the first time the owner logs in after the update that asks him / her to pick a successor(s) should they become inactive (the owner would not be able to enter the clan chat or edit settings without completing the prompt and their choice could be edited at any time after) If the owner never logs in after update and remains inactive for 6 months, the replacement should be picked from the highest ranking members by all active members that are not on probation when the vote is initiated (so that new recruits can not influence it) and the member with the most votes in X amount of time gets to be the new leader. It is unlikely that an rogue member would be able to gain ownership since their ambition would likely drive them elsewhere during the leaders 6 months of absence.

As for how to deal with an inactive leader that logs in randomly, sadly I don't know.

Hope everything makes sense, sorry if not.
