Cooke brushed aside the comment of the name. He knew it was an alias, though in future he would be sure to address her with a proper “the”. With a coyote smile, he clapped his hands, rubbed them together a little, and got to business.

“Sounds to me like you're saying there's more than just what you put in that paper. And I read that bit. Was a right good report, fitting for the paper, but I could tell there was more to the tale by what you did, or rather didn't, put in.” Cooke calmly beckoned the barkeep. Pointing to a slightly unusually dressed cigar smoker, he instructed, “I'll have what he's got,” and returned to the writer. “If I wanted a newspaper grinder, Ms. Talia, I'd've purchased another copy and saved both you and I the trouble. No, I wanted a real story, so I met you in person. I love a good story, Ms. Talia.” Cooke's mouth bent up into a smirk. “And it sounds like you've got quite the story to tell.”

By now, the waiter had returned with a bottle of brandy. Cooke paid quickly and quietly, and poured himself a glass. “I'd like for you to tell your story. Starting from the beginning, wherever that may be.”

Of course there was more. Not only is there not enough room for a full story, nobody would even pay attention if a no-name write put out something that seemed like wild fantasy.
she replied as the bartender brought over what was requested. It required the equal exchange of money, of course, but Cooke could presumably afford that.

I’ll assume you mean the story I have of her, since my own story is extremely boring and not relevant to anything here.
the writer continued after Cooke told her to tell the full thing. “
Finding a reasonable place to start is a bit difficult, since I only know it in bits and pieces and it’s always been hard for me to try and piece it together in chronological order, so I’ll start with what I think are three of the more interesting parts. They’re the most fantastical bits, coincidentally, and although everything I’m saying here is just what I was told I never got the impression that she was making this up. She didn’t seem the type, really, even though I doubt you’ll believe at least half of what I’m going to say.

So, here you go. She has personally met the Goddess, has died at least once defending that very entity, and has devoted her existence to maintaining the proper soul transfer of the people of this world.

Pausing for a minute, like she was giving Cooke time to think about how ridiculous what she had just said was, Talia then continued, “
Now, the actual story in as much of an order as I can give you. I don’t know where she’s from or where she was born. All she would tell me was that she “isn’t a native”. Whether that means of the country, continent, or the area in which I got to talk to her, I can’t say. She was fairly tight-lipped on how long ago she showed up here, too, although that was another interesting aspect.

I figured that meeting the Goddess was something from a long, long time ago, but the way she spoke and the events she mentioned seemed to say that she has only been around here for, at maximum, a hundred years or so. Granted, that’s still an impossibly long time, and I’m still not quite sure what to think of it.

She sighed, shrugging. “
I digress, though. Something she talked about in great detail was actually the founding of the Guild. Supposedly it was made at the suggestion of the group she is part of, as a means to combat the overly aggressive manhandling of the citizenry by the Noble class and the mercenary groups they had employed at the time. Before you ask, no, I don’t know the name of her organization. That was something else she was fairly tight-lipped about, but it seems obvious to me that they are not anyone that operates in the foreground of events. She tried to assure me that their actions are for the benefit of those on the continent, but, as a writer of those kinds of stories, it seems to me that anyone that doesn’t operate out in the light has something to hide. Still, if that’s the case, I can’t argue with the effectiveness of the decision. It gave the citizens another line of protection against both their oppressors and the monsters outside the cities that had been largely ignored by the Nobles.

As for her work...well, it’s hard to fully make sense of it. I know that at this point it’s common knowledge to anyone who looks around for information that she’s been part of several intrusions that’ve resulted in Artifact thefts. What she told me back then, before a lot of them had happened, was that anything she was doing was related to a singular goal, and any artifacts she was trying to get had something to do with that. Like I said, her claim is that her life is devoted to maintaining the proper soul transfer for the people of this world.

When I asked what that meant, she told me that it meant exactly what it sounded like, that the souls that were no longer tethered to this world need to be properly shepherded, and that her life is devoted to maintaining the proper operation of that. It’s...unclear, to say the least, but I got the impression that she meant every word of it. The woman is either crazy or has a purpose that’s on a different level from what a normal individual can hope to achieve.

Pausing again and taking a drink of whatever it was she had, Talia added, “
The strangest thing about her, though, was the way she looked. I’m sure you’ve seen a description, but I can assure you that what she looked like was a bit...stranger. What she’s got on her face doesn’t look like a tattoo or something painted on. It looks as though someone took a brand and burned away half the skin on the side of her face, but that whatever they did it with made it look like the mark is...alive. I don’t know how else to describe it. What was the creepiest thing, though, was that...well, she looked like me. Like my face with the marks etched on it. I don’t know what she can do, but whatever it is it was like looking into a mirror that could speak back to me in something extremely similar to my voice.

Now, there’s a lot more I can say, but since I’m probably getting boring at this point I might as well see if you’ve got any comments or questions so far.
” she told Cooke. As she had been talking, her gaze had shifted away from him and back out the front window, although the way she had been talking seemed to indicate that she wasn’t actually looking at anything in particular.

-----

Up on the bridge, everything was proceeding as one might expect. The trained helm crew were making their way through the storm without any great deal of difficulty, all of them vigilant for anything that might indicate a problem.

Up until now, nothing had happened that was out of the ordinary, but that changed when the communications officer put a hand to his headset, frowned, and then tentatively said to the Captain, “Sir, there’s a message coming in for you. It’s...a boarding request.”

“A what?! In this weather?” the Captain exclaimed, about as surprised as one could be. “Who’s it from? What’s their reasoning?”

“Not sure, sir. It’s sending a code along with the message that I can’t understand.”

“Send it to me.” the Captain said, and the communications officer nodded, rerouting the message as the Captain picked up a headset next to his chair and put it on, listening for a moment. As he did, a frown began to grow on his face, and by the time he was done it was extremely pronounced.

Slowly removing the headset, he gave the order, “Send a confirmation. They are clear to board.”

-----

In the back of the ship, on the third deck, an airship crew member opened and came through the door to the bridge, hurrying back to one of the crew members stationed by the door leading out to the deck. After a quick whispered conversation, the one standing by the door turned around, slid the bar back, and stepped away from the door.

As he did, the Captain’s voice came over the speakers, saying, “All passengers, please be aware that we are have received an emergency request for boarding. We will be presently receiving a small group of guests, who will be present on the vessel for approximately five minutes. We apologize for the inconvenience.”

A few moments after his announcement, the door to the outside opened, and five people stepped inside. All were dressed in khaki cargo pants and a dark green jacket with a logo on it that indicated a shipping and transportation company of some kind.

Three were male and one was female, the three men bareheaded - one brown haired while the other two had black hair, all of it short - while the female wore a visor with the same logo on it and had her brown hair back in a ponytail. One of the black-haired men looked to be in his 30s, but the others were all fairly young: the brown-haired man looked to be 25, the other black-haired man looked 22, and the young woman couldn’t have been more than 17.

When the door opened, the howling of the wind could be heard clearly, and rain swept in and slightly got onto anyone that happened to be near the entrance. The young woman, being the last in, quickly closed it once they were inside, and as soon as she had the oldest man said, “Kyle, go explain everything to the Captain.”

The brown-haired man nodded and ran off, making his way to and through the door leading to the bridge.

“You two, hurry. We can’t safely stay near this vessel too long in a storm like this.” the oldest man said, and the other two nodded as well. The second man went to the stairs, going up, while the young woman took the stairs going down.

For the moment, a somewhat uneasy silence hung over the ship. Pretty much every passenger had stopped talking, their eyes on the new arrivals as they made their way through the ship. It looked like they were searching for something, although they didn’t vocalize what it might be.

Annie took a sip of her drink when the announcement was made that they received an emergency request for boarding of this ship and it was a small group of guests boarding soon. She was very curious who this small group was. She looked around to see what the other passengers and crew who was in the lounge reaction to this news. -Dances-

Black Benjamin

Ben had raised his brandy as he had walked passed Cooke, acknowledging the momentary pointing. A while later, there was an announcement, with more people coming aboard for a reason Ben did not hear right, missing it. Since the newcomers were obviously somewhere else on the ship, Ben had no way to know anything about them, and probably would not even care anyways.

He noticed the girl look around, and soon at him after she sipped her drink. Ben raised his bottle of brandy briefly, acknowledging his drink. Indeed, no matter if a drink was alcoholic or not, it was still a precious entity. Well, Ben still felt a bit uneasy. He decided to stay rather alert, just in case, despite his drinking. Or, maybe he was just getting drunk!

Gareth Arenar

Gareth stepped into the lounge, closing the door behind him. With access to the outer decks restricted, that meant many of the passengers had retreated inside. And naturally, when you had a large quantity of people in a single room with little to do, they began to converse. And with so many people talking, it became difficult for someone to hear themselves think, much less read a book.

He did a quick survey of the room, and found that it was mostly empty. Just a card game... and some face-painted lunatic stalking around like a weirdo. There was also a conversation going on near the window, and one of the participants looked vaguely familiar. Then he remembered - it was that writer.

No matter. They could do as they wished, he just did not want to be disturbed. He found a vacant seat, far from everyone else and opened his book to begin reading. It was the biography of some king from the middle ages, describing the various wars he fought in and the political reforms he enacted. He had only finished reading a sentence when an announcement interrupted him.

With a sigh and a frown, he looked up from his book and listened to the message. Then he furrowed his brow in confusion. They were being boarded? In the middle of the storm? That seemed rather idiotic, to say the least. Of course, there was little he could do about it, so with a shrug he turned back to his reading.

Cooke leaned back in his chair as Talia began speaking, gently swirling his brandy around in its glass. He took a good sniff, and a small sip, savoring its flavor. He stopped swirling his drink when she paused, reading her face more closely. He squinted through the rest of her monologue, slowly sipping his brandy every so often. Every so often, his eyebrow would raise.

“No, not boring at all,” he said as she was finishing. “Almost completely unbelievable, but never boring. I have many questions, but I don't know how many you'd be able to answer, so I'll start with a few ones that'll bore you . How were you able to perform an interview with her, and why did you decide to do one in the first pla-?” Cooke was cut off by an announcement about an emergency boarding. But if it was an emergency, why would it only take five minutes? Strange, but not worthy of investigating. While he was distracted, he glanced around the room. Sitting by himself and reading a book was Gareth Arenar, or rather his son of the same name. He would have to speak with him after Talia. Oh. Talia.

“Pardon me, Ms. Talia. The interview.”
