How? She let me. There’s not a whole lot more of a reason than that, although since that effectively answers nothing I’ll go into a bit more detail.
” Talia told him. If she was at all bothered by the boarding announcement, or by Cooke getting distracted by it, she didn’t show it. Although, when the announcement had been made, her attention had turned back to the front window for a moment, but if anyone else cared to look they wouldn’t notice anything interesting. It was still raining, and flashes of lightning could be seen lighting up the interior of the clouds, but that was it.

Since that ties into you question of ‘why’, though, I’ll answer that first. As is obvious, I write fiction novels for a living, but back then I hadn’t managed to sell anything. I wasn’t sure why, and nobody could give me an answer that I felt I could really improve upon. I don’t know why, exactly, but I got it in my head that I needed to get more perspective on pretty much everything, so I started interviewing everyone that I felt could help me. Military experts and officers, high-ranking Guild members, heroes from all over...I even tried to get an audience with the Queen, and she actually gave me time to do so. It was all incredible, hearing what they had to say, but at the end of it I still felt like I was missing something.

She sighed. It seemed clear that, despite how difficult it had to have been to find the time to do what she had done, it was a time that she clearly missed. When she spoke again, there was a light that began spreading in her eyes, a grin that didn’t quite reach her lips, but what the cause of it might be would be up to interpretation.

I doubt you were interested at the time, but this was still the aftermath of the War, and people were finding dislodged Artifacts left and right. Naturally, the Church was trying to clean this mess up, and during that time the Storm was really pissing them off. It was the first time I’d heard of her, but the complete and utter mysteriousness of someone who attacked elite squads of Verosian Clerics, took only specific Artifacts, and never killed anyone while keeping their identity unknown to anyone but themselves completely captured the storyteller in me. The Storm seemed to be a villain, certainly, but she was a villain that I would very much have liked to write into a story.

So, I did the only thing I could think of to do. Using the newspaper that I was working for at the time, I put out an ad. I said that I wanted to speak to the Storm, to record as much of their story as they were willing to share. I said that I would be happy to meet at a place of their choosing, which in hindsight was really, really stupid, but I needed the inspiration I was sure that she could give me. So, six days later, I got a knock on my door at about 2 in the morning. Considering the fact that I was mostly asleep, I’m shocked I managed to actually get there and open it, but when I did...well, she was standing there. In case you’re wondering how I knew it was her, she had an artifact that had been stolen a while before, and whose disappearance I had covered. I knew what it could do - everyone involved did, it wasn’t much of a secret - and when it did exactly that there wasn’t really much else I could think. She told me that this was the place, and the time, of her choosing, and that if I was willing to do an interview now she would accept it, but if I declined she would never have time again.

Talia shrugged, finishing with, “
So that’s the how and why. She came in, we talked for a few hours, and she left. I’ve never seen her again. It’s a pity, too, since I missed so much I could ask due to what time it was. I got an audio recording set up, fortunately, but there wasn’t any time to try and get pictures.

Meanwhile, the unease on the ship remained. No words had been spoken between the passengers and those that had come aboard, but the fact that the four who were here looked like they were nervous made everyone else nervous too. If this was an emergency, what was wrong? Why were they here, and what did they want? It would appear to the average person that they had to be here to pick up cargo of some kind, but what kind of cargo would necessitate a boarding in the middle of a storm like this?

They didn’t seem willing to divulge that information, so that just made things worse. Although, since nobody asked them, it wasn’t like they were intentionally trying to hide anything. Perhaps they wouldn’t answer - it seemed likely - but without any of the passengers actually asking it couldn’t be proven either way.

In the lounge, the door opened, and the girl that had come onboard stepped in, shutting the door and looking around. If the fact that she hadn’t been around on the ship before now didn’t tip anyone off to the fact that she was one of the people that had come onboard, the fact that her uniform was soaked and she had water dripping from the ends of her hair probably would. Few of the people inside paid much attention to her arrival, either. The bartender looked up for a moment before going back to his oh-so-busy work, while Talia looked back over, gave the girl a raised eyebrow, and then went back to the interview she was having. The others in the room didn’t even look up from their cards.

A few moments after she had stepped in the room, though, the young woman that had come in spotted the young girl standing over by the window, and immediately went over to her, a quickness in her step that had not been there when she had entered. Ignoring everyone else, at least for the moment, she stopped a few feet away and said, “
Alicia?

A look of surprise on her face, the young girl turned away from the window, tentatively responding, “
Yes, that’s me. Can I help you with something?

For someone of her age, the tone was surprisingly sophisticated and formal, belying the casual appearance that she was sporting. It was clear she wasn’t expecting this, although she didn’t show any clear signs of being nervous or afraid at being approached like this.

My name’s Chloe. I’ve got something you need to see.
” the young woman replied, digging through her pockets and pulling out a small, gray slate-like object of some kind. She offered it to Alicia, who took it tentatively in her right hand, looked down at it, and then placed the forefinger of her left hand on the center of the slate. Although nothing clear seemed to happen, Alicia’s eyes widened as she either saw or read something on it...and not in a good way.

Chloe waited where she was while Alicia looked at whatever she was looking at, but she was clearly nervous: shifting from foot to foot, eyes moving around the room as though she was expecting someone to show up at any time...it was obvious she wasn’t comfortable in this situation.

Annie saw a girl walked into the lounge and she was very carious what's going on. She saw the the lady went to another young girl who's name was Chloe. She decided to get a little closer to find out. As she got closer she heard her name and giving her something. She pertended to read a book so, they won't know she was listening. -Dances-

Bridgett - Lobby

Two children scampered up and down the near empty aisles of the lobby, passing under the gaze of a certain red haired onlooker. Oh, how Bridgett missed the days where even this convoluted den of idleness could have become a place of fun and games. It sure beat sitting on her hands for half a day, but apparently the ship engineers disagreed. Bummer.

Casting a downcast look as glum as the weather, Bridgett examined the book that presently lay on her lap, titled: ‘A Tourist’s Guide to Vespania’. She had already read through it, three times in fact. She had picked it out of a small bookstore earlier that morning out of impulse, but the more she read, the more she was interested in her destination. Not that she would admit that, not even to herself – no, she was only here because she had a vestige to reign in.

Folding to a particularly colourful page, she lingered on a double feature of a variety of sweet delicacies enjoyed throughout the country that she in no way was tempted to try in a place she wouldn’t visit… because she had a job to do! Get those thoughts out of your head, girl!

Bridgett set the book aside with a sigh. She was overthinking things again. Chaste as she might be, there was no point in punishing herself because some layabout couldn’t join the real world. There was still months before military exams, so it wasn’t like she didn’t have time to burn!

With that resolved, she realised she was fidgeting with her fingers again, tying knots with a small rope she had taken aboard with gauntleted fingers. Yes, arriving to the airship in full sparring armour probably wasn’t the most comfortable of options, but what was a girl to do? She was bought up in military coats and dress pants, and somebody had sabotaged her luggage with unfamiliar dresses, blouses and bottles of harsh smelling chemicals. Naturally, she left that all behind – she had no use for them.

Pulling the rope taunt, Bridgett held up her rope creation – a handcuff knot, of all things. Between the loops, however, she could spot a girl in a rather strange uniform, maybe a courier of some kind? Happy for the distraction, she took a second look – the girl was drenched, and headed towards the lounge. Bridgett couldn’t help but be a little jealous – if the crew weren’t posted at the door, she wouldn’t have minded stepping out for a breather. The wilder the weather, the better in her opinion!

Bridgett sighed. Well, sitting here watching kids all day wasn’t going to fly. Maybe it was time to have “the talk” with Gareth…

Lounge

The silence that had started when Chloe had handed over whatever it was started to drag on, interrupted occasionally by the crash of thunder outside. The noise of rain on the glass had all but become normal at this point, and only the noise of thunder or flashes of lightning served as a noticeable interruption. Both girls didn’t seem to notice Annie sneak very badly, although Talia gave a raised eyebrow to the seeming attempt to remain unnoticed. Still, if she actually cared, she gave no indication.

Perhaps a minute into the silence, lightning flashed, and Talia asked, in a voice that seemed like it echoed in the silence, “
Chloe, what kind of ship did you come in on?

Spinning almost too quickly to face the writer, it took a moment for Chloe to find words to answer. Clearly, she hadn’t been expecting anyone to talk to her.

Um...why?

Well,
” Talia said, making a somewhat haphazard handwave towards the window, “
Unless you’re flying a black military-class airship, there’s another visitor here.

Two things happened then. First, lightning flashed again, and anyone that was watching the window - which now included Chloe - would see the outline of another ship outside...and would see that it was moving out and around the right side of the ship. Second, and as a direct result, every last bit of color drained out of the young woman’s face, and she spun back to the younger girl, Alicia, with words stumbling out of her mouth as she failed to form a coherent sentence.

Are you...is...can we…

The glow fading from the stone as Alicia looked up, she nodded. She seemed quite a bit more composed, and although there was fear in her eyes it did not show in her voice.

Yes. If you are here to get me, then we need to hurry. There may still be time.

Deck 3

To all of the passengers on the deck, any sound outside was drowned out by the noise of the wind and rain, but even if they had heard anything it wouldn’t have made a difference. What happened happened in the span of several seconds, and the only person on the deck who had been expecting anything hadn’t expected it to take such a swift and decisive form.

There was a knock on the exterior door, and although she wasn’t expecting it the crew member stationed there reflexively did what anyone in her spot would do: slid back the bolt and opened the door to allow whoever was stuck out there back inside. The second the door slid open - an action that the newcomer still looking around the deck had noticed at the last moment and frantically started to reach for something in his coat - there was a gunshot and the crew member staggered back, falling into the arms of the one from the other door, who had reflexively run forward to catch her.

Nobody actually got a look at who or what was outside, though, because before anyone could actually react something else got thrown inside and the entire back area of the deck was filled with smoke. Four more gunshots followed.

Lounge

Back in the lounge, it was faint, but the noise of gunfire from the deck above froze everyone in their tracks. Chloe visibly started shaking, and a sad look crossed Alicia’s features. Talia appeared strangely unfazed, at least until someone looked and saw that her grip on the glass she was holding was much tighter than it had been, and that mimicked her other hand, which now held a pocketwatch that she had taken out a few moments before.

Do you at least have a weapon?
” was what the writer asked, and Chloe’s wordless shake of her head prompted a sigh and the tossing of the pocketwatch with the words, “
Then here. I’m not going to risk my life for whatever is happening here, but if you don’t have any way of protecting either of you then I’ll let you borrow this.

Somehow, Chloe caught it, opening the lid and revealing to anyone that was looking that it was a combat matrix. Any other details of it weren’t readily available, but it was clear that, at the very least, this was a device made for combat situations.

Closing her hand around it, the young woman looked around the lounge again, her eyes asking what her voice seemed to be unable to do.

Help.

Deck 2

Out in the deck itself, the gunfire above was much more easily heard. There was no door blocking it, as the staircase didn’t have anything separating its landing from the actual deck. The reaction from everyone on the deck was immediate: everyone froze, and although nothing happened just yet it was easy to see that panic was beginning to set in. Nobody had any idea what was happening, only that someone had just opened fire on the deck above. There was no announcement from the Captain, either...and in fact, everything was eerily silent apart from the shots that had just taken place.
