“We...” he suddenly appeared to be uncomfortable “Feel free to explore the village bwana, you will find Aazi some where.” and he departed quickly, eager to deposit the fruit he had collected with assistance, and go back for more. His more muscular friend began to speak.

“Aazi left to da north of da village, she is some where in the jungle, looking for herbs.”

“Thank you.” Anastasia did*’t bother to stop in the village, there wasn’t time to be wasted in her eyes.

“So I wonder what she looks like, I bet she could make some nice clothes from the animals around here.”

“If she like the other people in this tribe, she probably wears practical clothing.”

“But that’s boring.”

“So is starving to death.” Azura thought about that for a few minutes, starving to death. She had never went more than a day without food, and even then it was because she just did*’t eat.

“I’d starve to death in style, though.” Ana simply laughed in response.

A man suddenly bolted out of a shrub and past them, into another bush, he returned from the bush with a fat looking snake moments later; he placed it in a bag presumably filled with more snakes. “Are you lost?” was all he asked.

“No, but we seek a woman called Aazi, seen her?”

“Just keep going north,” he said as he double checked his thought “and look out for foot prints!”

“Thank you.” they continued on through the brush. Another snake in their path, she kicked it to the side.

“Eek!”

“You know, we have passed at least three huge spiders and another two men hiding in bushes with spears, why did*’t you freak out when you saw those?” Anastasia kept walking “Azura?” she turned around, she looked completely pale in the face “What is it?” and that is when, she let out a terrified scream. Sighing, Anastasia grabbed her hand, and dragged her along.

“This place sucks.” Azura finally began to complain.

“Shh.”

“Don’t tell me to-”

“Shhh!” Anastasia looked carefully, and saw a woman crouched over, pulling what appeared to be roots and grass out of the ground, and placing it into a bag. A man suddenly appeared out of the brush, a terrible mask depicting violent images on his face, a club in his hand, his skin grey and festering. The woman instantly leapt up and swung a machete at the ‘man’. It blocked her attackk with his club, but she quickly spun downwards and sliced his rotted leg off, and as he fell into the ground, she removed the mask and removed his head as well. Another one appeared behind her, and Anastasia pinned it to a tree with an arrow through it’s masked head.

The woman appeared to be very confused, and turned around, instantly spotting the tall white skinned woman approaching her. “Thank you bwana, how could I repay this debt?” she asked as she crossed her arms, and tried to see the girl who almost seemed as if she was hiding behind the tall woman.

“Man named Pikkupstix sent me here, he say you could help me.”

“I can surely try.” Azura felt like this conversation was impossible to understand, with such strong accents coming from both of speakers.

“My familiar has fled from me.”

“This is bad news, let’s speak about it else where, where the dead don’t lurk for prey.” she pointed to the corpses, of the corpse attackers, “Also, I am Aazi, but I have a feeling you already knew that.” she shook Anastasia’s hand.

“Anastasia.” she said firmly.

“And you?” Aazi said, trying to get Azura’s attention off a flower she had found.

“Oh.” the girl suddenly appeared to be shy “Azura.” the three walked through the brush and talked casually until the reached the shoreline, at which point Aazi ripped a large leaf from a plant, and used it as a seat on the sandy beach. The other two copied her.

“So what type of familiar was it? Minotaur are notorious for escaping their owners to go rampaging through streets. Sometimes bird typed familiars escape for more freedom...”

“He was a *Karamthulhu Overlord’” Aazi suddenly burst into laughter, and fell on her back.

“So old Pikkupstix sent you to mess with me. Well here, tell hi-”

“Is no joke.” Anastasia interrupted. Aazi calmly reached into the sack she had strapped to her waist, and removed a bottle of rum, which she took a big drink from before attempting to return it to her sack “Oi, may I have a drink?”

“It’s strong stuff, you think you can handle it?” Anastasia only laughed as she took the bottle and drank from it for a few seconds.

“Back to my question though, what happened?” Aazi shifted, she seemed to be uneasy.

“Ever heard of the long lost god Karamthulhu?”

“No, is this important to my problem?”

“Yes it is, listen carefully... I will tell you a history not recorded in history books.” Anastasia felt like this somehow couldn’t end well, and so did Azura. The two both leaned forward in anticipation for the story to begin.

“After the great Elder Gods created the plane in which our planet exists, an ancient and powerful deity from another plane all together found this realm, and settled in it. He soon began to shape parts of it, along with the great and just god Guthix. Karamthulh designed the sea, as Guthix designed the land, and soon they were done working. Guthix soon found a portal from which humans were entering Gielinor, and he greeted them, and explained to them the laws of this realm. Karamthulhu watched silently, before making himself known to mortals by leading a group of humans to a peninsula. Out first the humans feared him, but he explained how to build sturdy ships and powerful weapons... and soon they dominated the entire region around them.”

“And...?” Azura impatiently asked.

“His power grew day after day, with temples being built, and word of his power spreading, and thus creating more influence. He grew content with what he had done, and then relaxed to watch his humans wage war and build and expand. It was all amusing to him,” she stopped to drink from her rum bottle “Many younger gods began to enter this realm. Armadyl, Bandos, Saradomin, and Zaros were the main ones. They too gathered followers and soon gained much power, but tensions were rising quickly. Karamthulhu did not bother forming alliances for he was a much stronger god than them all, and knew he could smite any challengers single handedly, he had no need for allies, or so he thought.”

“Soon, a mighty Mahjarrat, a powerful near godly creature stole a staff from the god Armadyl, and used it to kill Zaros and ascend to god-hood, and then war broke out. Karamthulhu dominated all the enemy armies, his legions of followers were well trained, well equipped with fine steel and magic runestones, and further more they were extremely well motivated. With their helmets designed to look like a fish’s fin, they moved with great strength and agility into the battlefield, devastating the ranks of any enemy, or combined enemies before them.”

“Whoa.” Azura said quietly.

“A very temporary truce was formed between all the other warring gods, and they lured Karamthulhu into an ambush. It was a furious battle in which Saradomin was said to have shouted a profanity in anger, something he had never done before, Bandos’ favorite warhammer was broken, Armadyl lost all his feathers and had to grow new ones, and Zamorak lost an eye, and had to replace it with a mortals!”

“Ultimately though, Karamthulhu was cast from power, and his cities and followers were destroyed, and soon after he was erased from history by religious zealots. They thought he abandoned this realm, but what truly happened... was that he retreated to a massive underwater cave deep, deep in the ocean, where he hid for years. His small cult of followers worshiping silently gave him power enough to create a new race of creatures to do his bidding. Karamthulhu, he loved them so much he named them after himself. They were smart quick and agile creatures who explored the waters and worshiped him, giving him more power and constantly updating him on what was happening all over the world. They spread messages to his cult followings, and informed them someday he would return, and never to lose hope. And that they could identify each other by wearing an pendent with an eyeball or tentacle on it.”

“His creations carved out buildings and places for them to worship him under the water, and it was rumored that someday when he was strong again, he would call all of his followers, dead or living, human or karamthulhu, and they would retake their lost lands, and show the world what revenge was like. So when you’re familiar said, ‘He is here’... that could only mean one thing.”

Anastasia felt like she had just wasted part of her life listening to that story, but then she wondered something; was the island she explored the peninsula mentioned in the story, obviously it had under gone some changes...

*What happened to the land where they existed first, the peninsula?” Anastasia asked.

“‘With thunder and rage, so did the angry gods cast their city to the sea, and say “Let it be forgotten.‘“

“Well then wise woman Aazi, I think you are right. I visited the island that had dead walking men on it, and in the sea lived karamthulhu, and beneath it existed buildings, and a large stone door.” Aazi just looked at her briefly.

“Do you live near water?”

“There is a pond near my apartment.”

“And do you have friends who live near water?”

“Yes? They live in Varrock city, there is a river running near it.”

“You should leave those places and find some where dry.”

“Oh! Oh! My parents live in the desert!”

“Then you should go there and hide.”

“From what?” Anastasia asked.

“Your Overlord lived inside a bowl full of water, right? Karamthulhu need water, and it is rumored somehow they use the bodies of water to capture cities and towns near them. It just so happens most human cities exist near sources of water. Look at us, we built our home by the ocean!”
“Wait, I have killed karamthulhu before, they are not hard to harm!”

“When did you do this?”

“Months ago, on a pirate ship, they climbed all over the vessel and we had to force them away.” Anastasia suddenly felt like laughing out loud, the end of the world wasn’t here after all.

“Oh no!* Aazi stood up “So they’ve been waiting for months for their orders... this means they know exactly what to do!” she removed her machete and made sure it was sharp “This means the attack is waiting to happen... literally.”

“They’re harmless... only stupid people could get killed by them.”

“You seem to be forgetting his promise to raise the dead.” she motioned for them to follow her back through the jungle, she walked at a brisk pace.

“So you’re saying we’ll be facing hordes of his former followers, and squid?”

“Cult members, too probably. Look I don’t know how exactly the attack will happen, but I just know when angry gods have returned to power, you do not want to be near the sites they plan on attacking.”

“That’s a compelling argument...” Azura said, she sounded worried.

“Well now that my question is answered.” Anastasia laughed “And that my problem is just the end of world, Azura has been having nightmares, anything you can do about that?” Aazi laughed to.

“Yes sure, nightmares about what?”

“People... and things attacking me.”

“When did the nightmares start?”

“After I found these gemstones that I think could be magical.”

“Magic gemstones, let me see, do you have them with you?” Azura took one from her pouch.

“Communication stones, they work two ways, do you know anyone else who has them?”

“...I gave one to her squid thing since it tried to take one from me.” Aazi appeared to be very concerned.

“Perhaps he was trying to scare you. Describe the attackers?”

“They were... shaky and jerky, some of them crawled...”

“Undead followers of Karamthulhu? Perhaps he was trying to warn you, maybe he wanted you to stay away from danger, maybe he was just a loyal follower to a god, and a loyal friend to you?”
“Wow really?”

“No, he was trying to dissolve your mind so he could control you.”

“Whaaat!?” Aazi shrugged.

“They can only control damaged, or very weak minds. Nightmares make minds weak quickly.” Azura looked very upset, as if she was about to cry.

“At least you avoided it in time. You are a spell caster, I can feel it, you would’ve been a very good addition to an army.”

“Well... thanks?”

“You’re welcome. You may spend the rest of the day here if you like, or you may return to your homes to prepare.” Anastasia shrugged.

“We can spend some time here, yes Azura?”

“I guess so... so you have the new wall to protect you from the undead followers right?”

“Exactly, we love our island home, and will not give it up so easily. Now come quickly, lunch is being served.” the food wasn’t easy to describe, it’d be more simple just to call it ‘exotic’. With various fruits the two had never had before diced up over monkey, snake, and spiders that had been roasted over a spitfire it was a unique experience. The food was surprisingly delicious after you managed to mentally forget that you were eating rather unlikely creatures.

Hours passed, and soon Anastasia wasn’t sure if she should actually be worried about this whole thing or not anymore, but she figured it couldn’t hurt to put together an emergency kit once she got home.

Anastasia noticed as she left the main eating hut to leave, men were sharpening their machete and spears, building new arrows and bows, and crafting strong looking wooden shields. The entire village was preparing for war. She couldn’t tell if the native people were paranoid or not.

*I wish you could stay longer, but I understand you have much to prepare for.” Aazi said as she told the pair goodbye.

“We will visit again soon, is lovely land you have here.” Anastasia reassured, and Azura waved and smiled thinly. The two disappeared in a swirling purple vortex.

“Come with me.” Jagter, the master huntsman’s voice boomed from behind. He had a big wooden shield strapped to his arm, with a war-club strapped to his waist a few throwing spears on his back, he looked ready for anything. Following him through the jungle, Aazi began to grow impatient, and this was partly due to the fact the sun was almost gone, partly because she felt uneasy about going close to the sea. *Look” he said, pushing a final plant out of the way to reveal the ocean to her. It was absolutely, motionless. No waves, no fish in the distance, no motion any where.

“Should we post guards to watch the coast?” she asked her much larger companion.

“I ‘fink so.” she nodded and turned back into the brush, and he slowly followed, taking one last long look at the surreal looking ocean.

Anastasia and Azura went their separate ways for the night. She spent more time figuring out what happened to her pet than she had hoped she would, and it was relatively late now. She figured Ko might be a little worried, but he’d get over it. Entering the apartment, it was empty. She searched every room but found no one any where. Oh well. She grabbed her backpack, and began building an emergency kit as she had planned.

Else where, later that night.

“You ready?” Dief nervously asked, as he smoked a cigarette to relax his nerves.

“I don’t think you’ll be coming.” Kopf, a burly man trained in swordsmanship laughed.

“W-why not, man?”

“Look at you, you’re a wreck. You’ll freak out or do something stupid.” he resumed sharpening his long, yet thin sword. A cloud of laughter erupted from the other members of the gang from within the room. All were dressed and armed for a very specific task. Hooded cloaks or masks were the fashion, along with straps and buckles to lock down a variety of important weapons and gear. They were just waiting for one last delivery of supplies before they moved.

A man wearing a facemask entered the dank and wet room. Two large men carried a crate behind him. “Claws, from Burthorpe, just as you asked, Elder.” the men pried the crate open with a crowbar, and showed the contents to the curious gang members.

“You can really mess a brotha up with these.” Dief said chuckling as he slipped a pair on, and swung them around. Other members slowly took a pair, others did*’t feel comfortable using them, and thus left them behind in the crate. The delivery man suspected it was Elder himself who wanted a pair of claws the most though, he liked bare-handed fighting, and claws were a great weapon to improve that fighting style, while keeping it much the same. Elder waded through the other members to examine the new weapons.

“Oh wait, I got a special pair for you.” the man removed them from his waist bag. It was like the others, except metallic knuckles had been added to the knuckle section, to improve punching.

“Thank you.” Elder said too quietly for anyone but the delivery man himself to hear. He placed the lid back on the crate, and stood on it. “Listen up!” his voice hissed, grabbing the attention of the fifty-odd men and women “You have been selected for this job because you are the best suited for it, you are expected to behave not as people, but as soldiers loyal and obeying without question,” the crowd let out an approving roar. He allowed them to cheer for a moment, before continuing “Now stay in the shadows, and stay well hidden until the time is right, you will know when that is.”

And with that, Elder hopped from the crate to a ladder leading up to the surface of Varrock “Come on!” Kopf roared and was the first behind Elder. It’s been a long wait, Elder thought to himself, but it will soon be worth it. He stood proudly in the middle of the street, and then like a snake, began to hide from shadow to shadow.
