“M-me?” she stuttered out, placing her hand over her mouth in a concerned manner. Ko looked quickly between the Overlord and girl, and wasn’t quite sure what it had in mind with her, but who was he to deny them what they wanted?

The Overlord crawled into a bowl of water, and beckoned for her to follow, she dumbfoundedly waited in her stiff chair, was this really happening? What did a squid in a bowl even want to do with her?

“What are you waiting for?” Ko said sharply. She stood nervously and trailed the bowl bounded sea critter. A pair of clearly dead men followed the two, though they had barely begun to rot. Their skin was easily as pale as the moon, and smelled horribly of bad meat. She covered her nose with her hand, a gesture that they found offensive.

“Problem, girl?” the tallest one asked while grabbing her hand and pulling it from her face. His breath was awful, and his teeth were yellow like sulfur.

“N-no, I just... smelled something bad,” his decaying eyes narrowed and he squeezed her hand more tightly as they followed the slightly hovering Overlord “probably something in the k-kitchen.* she thought the undead guard may believe that, his brain was decaying wasn’t it?

“Lying filth!” the second shouted, shoving her into the ground. She debated standing back up, maybe she could pretend she was unconscious, maybe they’d send her to go recover.

“Get up!” the first shouted, she wasn’t fooling anyone and quickly realized it. As she began to stand, he kicked her in the upper back, throwing her back into the stone floor. She yelped, and heard nothing except their deep laughter.

“What’s the matter?” the decaying guard asked, poking her ribs with his boot.

“C’mon we ain’t go all day.” the second groaned, and grabbed a fistful of her black hair, and pulled her to her feet by it. A single tear began forming in her eye, but she hastily wiped it away to prevent embarrassment.

“Wot’s that then? Gone cry on us? I don’t like tears,” the guard snickered “I do like these though.” he grabbed her rear firmly. Some people might’ve wondered why something completely dead would be interested in anything other than perhaps maiming and devouring living things, some others might have tried to think of some clever way out of a bad situation. Azura could simply not muster any thoughts besides a very primal and instinctive reaction. She shot her fist off directly across the guard’s lower jaw, sending him falling down to the floor in pain and confusion.

“What the hell?” he barked as he began to stand, but he was simply met by her stylish black boot to the nose. The second guard grabbed her from behind.

“Easy love! Easy now..” he grabbed her arms and tried to wrestle her into submission. She tossed her head backwards like a bucking bull and smashed his nose, and it began to bleed. The other pulled a dagger from his belt, but before he could use it, the Overlord spoke.

“Enough,” his two lackeys grinded their yellow teeth, they desperately wanted to teach the young brat a lesson, but that was simply not possible if the Overlord was involved “I can’t amuse myself with her if she is dead, put it away,” he pointed at the dagger, which the guard begrudgingly slipped back into place “and behave.” was his final order.

With his large eye, the Overlord noticed tear trickling down his toy’s face. He pulled it off her cheek with a force of magic, and dropped it into his bowl of liquid before continuing. Her pounding heart beat was all she could hear when she blacked out for those few seconds, she wasn’t sure exactly what she had done, everything went red for a little while. She did know for a fact she had struck the guards more than once, however.

They finally made it to the roof top of the Palace, the Overlord seemed to sink into his bowl a little as the relaxing breeze brushed across his slimy body. “Entertain yourselves.” he instructed his bodyguards. One removed a pack of cards from his armored vest, and they sat on the ground and began to play a game of poker.

The Overlord tossed a fist sized ball of sparkling water at Azura. Her first reaction was to throw her hands up at it, she was surprised to see it stop and hover in front of her. She curiously waved her smooth hand back and forth, and the water ball followed “Interesting.” he commented. She second guessed throwing it back at him, but she did*’t know what else to do with it. He gracefully moved hie tentacle into catching it, and redirecting it in one liquid-smooth motion. They continued tossing it back and forth. The guards stopped to watch for a few seconds, but quickly lost interest. She curiously pondered if he actually just wanted someone to play catch with, or if he was just trying to lull her into a sense of security, or something similar, after all he was very odd. He even stole one her tears, it was hard to get more bizzare than that.

“Do you realize you are using magic?” he suddenly asked.

“The water is just... enchanted.” she argued.

“You are using your own magic.” he told her. She was having problems adjusting to his voice, it just simply did not seem to belong to a human, just some creature using human words.

“I don’t have any runes with me.” she caught the ‘ball’ and tossed it upwards so it arched back down.

“Everyone has magic with in them, runes just magnify it.”

“I’ve seen people who can’t even use magic with runes.”

“Some people have more magic than others.” upon catching the ball of water, he dropped it back into his bowl and waved his tentacle for her to come closer. She reluctantly began to walk forward, glancing over her shoulder to assure the guards weren’t trying something, but they were still quite content with their cards.

“Magic is powerful,” he waved his tentacle, the sound of a shattering window echoed from the distance “and with enough practice you don’t need runes.”

“How is that possible?” she curiously wondered aloud. He thought for a few seconds, attempting to think of a good example that would apply to humans.
“If you spend all day lifting heavy things, your muscles will get stronger, and if you only use the magic inside of you, it will get stronger.” that made sense enough.

“Why are you telling me this?”

“Because, I will not be here much longer, and I want to share my knowledge with someone who cares.* that sounded odd to her, were there not plenty of junkie cultists begging to worship him for their various twisted reasons?

“So when is the... Kara-tha-u..” she was having problems trying to remember how to pronounce it’s name.

“Karamthulhu,” he said it slowly, allowing her to hear and understand every syllable “tonight.”

“Tonight..?” she sounded a little scared.

“More importantly however, I have questions for you.”

“Huh?” she asked “Don’t you have connections to divine entities... what questions could I answer?”

“I wish to kno-* but he quickly realized the strong smell of cigarette smoke, it was Truand.

“Hey look, it’s my favorite guy!” he shouted walking over to the edge of the roof next to both of them.

“You’re dismissed.* the Overlord said, waving for Azura to leave his presence. She quickly walked away, trying not to make eye contact with Truand or the decaying guards as she began jogging down the spiraling staircase. She did not want to be alone in the Palace, she was going to find Ko or Johnny.

“So listen here boss...” Truand removed his notebook “we only have two hundred and thirty two prisoners left,” he flicked his used up smoke over the edge of the roof “Our frontline that was s’posed to be destroying that Barbarian Village went from three thousand three hundred to just over five hundred this morning,” he anxiously shoved another nicotine stick into his mouth “Elder said we need all the sacrifices we can muster for the Rebirth thing, but meanwhile the frontline guys aren’t going to last against any counter attack since there’s like a thousand knights over there now.*

*Organize patrol routes for the soldiers inside the walls, leave the others to die.” was Overlord’s cold hearted response. Truand simply shrugged and left quietly. He thought about it on his way down the stairs, and decided you couldn’t expect a whole lot of emotion out of a squid.

Overlord finally decided to just rest until tonight, when he would be obligated to use some strenuous magic techniques. But just as that plan of relaxation was coming together, another annoyance arose, though not one you could help in his situation. Tuflos had quietly made his way onto the roof, but was soon followed by much louder workers. Fifteen in total, they had till tonight to build an altar on the roof to the glory of Karamthulhu.

They were already equiped with an icon the size of a person; it was a marble statue of a hooded man with his palms opposite to each other, in the center of them was a large glass eye. They placed it in the center of the roof, where several training dummies used to be for guards. From there they began building torches, and an altar with an oddly huge gold bowl designed to fit on top of it.

“I have not felt anxious or nervous for longer than I can remember.” Tuflos said with a slightly laugh.

“Neither have I.” Overlord replied, though his voice was completely devoid of emotion. The two odd figures stood side by side and patiently waited. It was mid afternoon now, it would not be much longer.

Barbarian Village...

It was Five ‘O Clock, and there was no signs of any reinforcements appearing to assist the Cultists, they began re-planning their strategies. Aiden and Caden along with the barbarian nobility would lead a large offensive push to the main gate to draw attention, allowing the secondary team to easily locate a weak point to enter from, and from there free the prisoners and kill off the intelligence behind the Cultists.

A large ration of food was fed to the forty four members of the infiltration squad, it was supposed to get their energy nice and high before they were sent out to do their job. Aiden and Caden were not given such a ration, but they did just fine food-wise. Several men were just dying from their wounds, and they were deliciously fresh. As the secondary group began to suit up for combat, Eckhard and Crunge approached the brothers as they gorged themselves on another corpse.

“What tradition is this?” Eckhard demanded.

“It’s not, we’re just hungry.” Caden replied, before returning to devouring the man’s leg. Eckhard took Crunge’s sword, and lifted it high above his head and sliced off the man’s other leg. He lifted the beefy apanage to his mouth, and slowly sunk his teeth into it.

“Tastes almost like pork,” he shrugged and passed it to Crunge, who was much less willing to try their cuisine “why are you man-eaters?”

“I like beef personally,” they replied simultaneously *But if there ain’t any other meat around,” Aiden started.

“Then we’ll just eat anything else, insects, dogs, cats, people... food is food.” Caden finished. Eckhard simply shrugged and began inspecting his warriors carefully, to assure they were all in good condition. Several men began following Aiden and Caden’s eating habit, either from curiosity or extreme hunger pains.

“I believe we should leave now,* Anjel suggested *I think if we do, we can find the best point of entrance.”

“I think if we wait till it’s darker we’ll have better odds of going undetected.” Lowe shared his opinion calmly.

“Mah only problem is we ain’t sure if they gone bring in more troops, what if we get outnumbered again?” Forrest asked.

“He is right, we not sure when they may float down more soldiers,” Anastasia agreed “if we go now, we may overthrow them before reinforcement arrive, and we become hero, yes?”

“Ooh you betcha!” Forrest shouted with a smile “I’s bet we get a nice huge reward fer all our good deeds.” Zorn smashed his fist into the table.

“We had better! The damage to our village has been extensive!”

“If the King and Queen are still alive, chances are we’ll all be rich by the end of the day.” he slipped on a necklace of teeth, but Anastasia noticed something odd about it, she couldn’t quite place her finger on it though. He pulled on a pair of tight fitting black leather gloves and tightened his quiver of arrows tightly to his back. The others followed after him, checking their straps and buckles and making sure everything was held down properly. Forrest and Anastasia both wore finger less black gloves. Forrest even had his brown hair cut shorter to make sure it wouldn’t get in his way.

“Moric, Aiden, Caden.” Lowe called out. The brothers had washed off all the blood from their faces and hands but left their dull gritty armor untouched. Moric had finally managed to get over the fact they were man-eaters, but was shocked at Lowe’s necklace.

“Are those human teeth?” he gasped. Lowe smirked for a few seconds.

“Yeah, some people have really pretty teeth...” he seemed to drift away for a second as he thought about how he collected his favorite ones “listen up, it’s time for us to go, so that means it’s time for you fellas to get ready to charge.” The barbarian nobility stood with them.

“We will fight till the last man, their last man that is.” Crunge grinned.

“I trust all of you will preform spectacularly.” Anjel smiled with his perfect shiny teeth. All forty four members of the infiltration platoon began to quietly leave through a hole dug under the wall, from there they jogged at a brisk pace, making surprisingly little noise despite many being armored. The barbarians dived in such a way that they made no noise as they entered the water, and were very quickly on the other side. The Divine Ones were slower in crossing due to their extra weight, but managed to cross in a much less visually appealing method.

The mobilized force of fourteen hundred knights and barbarians was swelled further to sixteen hundred by suddenly moralized refugees armed hastily with spears and clubs. Eckhard and his children marched side by side with Moric and the brothers as their increasingly angry and motivated fighting force trailed closely behind in a mostly disorganized manner.

The undead legions organized shoulder to shoulder, shields raised and waited patiently for the incoming enemy force, which suddenly began a charge.

Inside the walls...

“Move it! Move it!” the sound of thrashing whips, and cracking punches, along with the jingle of chains erupted from inside the city as crews of Cultists began moving prisoners out of the various areas they had been kept. Some were kept inside the Grand Exchange, others locked in the basement of the Western Bank. All of them were headed for the Palace.

“What’s going on?” Johnny asked Azura.

“They’re bringing their god back to life somehow tonight. I bet it’s with sacrifices...”

“Oh great... think your friend will let them kill us?”

“Ko? I don’t know, I think we’re fine though. You said Roxanne was your sister so she won’t let Elder kill you.”

“You two will be fine,” she said from behind “though he does want everyone up on the roof.”

“Alright sis.” Johnny stood, his clothes were bloodied, dirty, but on the bright side his swollen eye was gone. His face was still covered in cuts and bruises from his thrashing though.

The Palace was ghastly silent for once, not a sound was heard other than hurried footsteps as the living made their way to roof to behold the grand Rebirth. The cultists stood in rows to either side of the Altar. Elevated on a granite block, the marble statue of Karamthulhu stood higher than anyone else. The Altar was large covered with fine white linen, trimmed with golden lace. The oddly large golden bowl sat neatly atop it, two steps leading up to it. Elder stood eerily before the Altar, silent yet showing his large teeth, with claws clearly strapped to his hands. This did*’t feel right at all.

They were moved towards the back of the column of cultists, Azura was surprised to see the Overlord sitting next to her feet. Looking around she noticed some were being carried by guards, others were calmly waiting in seemingly random locations. “I want to ask my question.” the genderless voice ringed in her mind.

“Go ahead.” she mentally replied.

“What did she say when I was called away?” she was confused by his question briefly, before realizing he was speaking of Anastasia, and her reaction to his disappearance at her apartment.

“Well me and her went to a Summoning master the next morning to find out what happened, and then...” she explained in detail the adventure they embarked on to figure out what had happened to her beloved familiar. The Overlord seemed to shift awkwardly in his bowl.

“Thank you.” was his finishing message as a line of chained prisoners were brought in, and forced to kneel behind the Altar. First just a dozen or so, but soon there was over a hundred, and even more behind them. Truand quickly made his way to Tuflos and whispered too quietly in his ear for anyone else to hear.

“Sixteen hundred enemy soldiers, our guys are going to be dead very soon, they’ll get into the city and we just don’t have a lot of time.”
