It would be of no comfort to the others in the party who felt out of their depth here, since of course they wouldn't know it just by looking, but they were very much not alone - this was way beyond any training Isaac had been put up to. But to put his thoughts on show like that, beyond what he had already shown? Morale would only lower further. He may not have been any kind of official leader, but he had to keep a strong face when staring at... Whatever the hell all this was.

" Figures it wouldn't be so simple... " He muttered, the revelation that this would be over in such a short amount of time not helping his thought process. Two minutes - that was what Miyasi said, and time was rapidly ticking down. They were collecting the guy in the sarcophagus - Vellin, that was his name - and would disappear through that strange 'portal' in no time. Questions would go unanswered, the group would leave empty-handed for their efforts, a mystery that would be forgotten or pondered on when they went their separate ways.

He had argued for them not to engage with the two mysterious people, that they would not win - and he knew they wouldn't. As Harry had said and he had agreed, it would be better for them to let the three go without a fight so that they could all live to report or move on with their lives. That was all they had to do - nothing, just wait, and watch them vanish.

He knew that.

It didn't matter.

He was already moving.

Isaac wasn't entirely sure when his body had taken over, reacting to a timer he could see only in the footsteps of Storm and Miyasi approaching that portal. In one motion he had freed his sword fully from its sheath, the scabbard clattering off to one side of the room as he released it and tightly gripped his blade's handle in both hands. He had broken into a run before the blade was even fully free, boots pounding against the stone as he charged - sword held somewhat behind himself where he could pull it in for a momentous swing - a classic

usage of a blade this size, and one proven to be effective time and time again.

He burst from his initial position just a few moments before Annie started running, leaving a sizable gap between their positions with Isaac being ahead by a number of feet. Not that he was aware the kid was charging into a mass of swords with nothing to protect herself, he wasn't really thinking all that much right now.

" Can't let you do that! " He called, 'without trying' his mind added, aiming to head off the pair and block their path to the portal. He would need to move fast, and of course skirt around them to do so - those swords would almost certainly come for him, but he was prepaared to defend and deflect them as best he could, if not dodge through their swinging arcs. There was maybe, just maybe, a slight chance of winning, but that wasn't his goa even if he would try his best - he intended to delay them. Less than two minutes, that was all he needed to do.

"E-eh?” Elyssia voiced her confusion. Of course they were going to allow them to leave, right?

Evidentially not.

The room erupted into action, with Issac already leading the charge. The girl who was about her age seemed to be in hot pursuit, both evidentially unaware of the menacing swords rousing about the room.

She wanted to take a step forward, but her legs refused to listen. She wanted to yell, but her voice simply caught in her throat. She wanted to look away, yet she could only stare as the scene unfolded through watery eyes.

Please goddess, she prayed, show mercy.

Isaac jumped to action, unwilling to let the portal be used. Though, Storm said attempted prevention would be a waste of time and effort, but only time would tell.

Amidst the impulse, Rory scanned his surroundings. If there happened to be something nearby that looked valuable, ancient, magical, or technological, Rory would put in his pocket.
Rory’s upper lip raised as he smiled, showing his upper teeth, and chuckled.
“Ey, now dat dehr’s a real tomb raider! Be tihnkin’ he be deh one leadin’ dis parrtee!” He loosely curled his thumbs behind the top of his plackart. Despite his smile and good mood, he was ready to withdraw his revolvers and at least parry danger.

Like Elyssia, Elizabeth (coincidentally, the first vowel of both their names were the same) was nervous. She kept her eyes low, but the blood and bodies made things worse. Knees bent, she scuttled to the entrance, scabbard angled from its drag.
“In case anyone cares, if things get really bad, I’m running away.” Elizabeth would withdraw her sword and revolver if she had too.

Harry Richard

Harry wanted to facepalm, but knew such an action would temporarily obscure his vision to potential danger.

There was no discussion, and no planning. Isaac and Annie just charged in. It didn't even look like Annie had a decent melee weapon, yet there she was. That had been one of his expectations when taking the kid along - his other expectation was that she would freeze up instead, but the other kid with them seemed quite willing to fulfill that role. Yet he had expected more sense from the military man, yet there he was, and it was probably his actions which inspired the kid in the first place.

"By the Goddess..." he muttered. He placed one hand on his revolver, and the other hand on Elyssia's wrist. "Alright, time to go," he said as he proceeded to walk backward towards the stairs, not diverting his attention from the action.

Underground Vault Chaos

As the two members of the group began to charge those that were leaving, a look of both confusion and concern appeared on Lias’ features. She didn’t want them to die, and wasn’t sure she believed the promise that nobody was going to die here, and with the one that felt like the superior officer moving into action, she unconsciously did the same thing. Raising her crossbow, she took aim, only to find that the trigger would not pull. No matter how hard she tried, it seemed like the device was stuck. As she tried to make it work, Storm raised her hand and made a flicking motion. As she did, something similar to the impact cause by such a motion hit Lias on the forehead. It was very minor in force, but the surprise made her stumble, the crossbow dropping from the aim that it had been at.

Annie never got more than a few feet, although it wasn’t quite clear why to her or anyone else. Her movements forward stopped very suddenly, and to her it would feel like she ran into a net made of thin strings. However, she couldn’t see anything that would constitute this, and when she ran into it whatever was causing the sensation of strings wrapped around her, holding her in place. No matter what she did, it would be impossible for her to break out. Interestingly enough, whatever restrained her was not painful at all, and seemed to simply exist to hold her in place.

As Isaac went to attack, Storm’s only comment was, “
No deaths.
” She didn’t move to intercept, nor did she change her course or speed.

Miyasi kept pace with her as well, but the swords were another story. They were the ones that moved to intercept Isaac. He would immediately be able to tell a few things from the way they moved. One, each one moved differently. It was more than the fact that they were all different swords: it was like there was a different person controlling each one.

Two, they seemed to still be affected by the normal motions of attacking, being unable to simply stop a swing if it went somewhere ineffective. Three, the force of the strikes held more force than he suspected Miyasi could muster physically, hinting that her physical capability was either greater than it seemed or had nothing to do with how she fought. Finally, he could tell that, were he fighting one of these swords, it would probably be a victory for him.

Unfortunately, he wasn’t.

The first few swords were simple, and their swipes at him were deflected with the superior size of his blade and the strength he was able to put into it. For a moment, it seemed as though he might actually be able to get close to them, and maybe have a chance of stopping their escape. That moment quickly passed, however. As the third and fourth swords came down, he was able to bring his blade up once again to parry, but as he did there was a strike on the back of his knee as one of the swords he had knocked to the side came back around to hit and knock him off balance. It was the side of the sword he was struck with, so only minor cuts above and below were what he received, but the combined force of the swords from above and the push from behind forced him to move back to catch his balance and prepare for the next hit.

Three of the swords did not move in as he stepped back, and the two from behind him swung around so that they were once again in front of him. The other three, however, did not pause, and moved in from both sides and the front.

The one on the left seemed to be emulating the tactic of a moment before by going for his leg, and because he had seen it before Isaac was able to avoid it with a quick diagonal step that also allowed him to land a heavy blow on the incoming right blade that threw it to the floor for a moment. He was then able to bring up the hilt of his own blade to catch the stabbing blade ahead and deflect it up and over his shoulder.

Unfortunately, it seemed that this was what the blade had been going for. As it reached most of the way along Isaac’s block, it suddenly swung around, the handle heading directly for his forehead. By bringing up his right hand, Isaac was able to block it, but the hit hurt. He had the presence of mind to grab the handle that was right there as well, but was forced to quickly release it when the pullback made it clear that it would do him no good to try such a tactic.

In the time it took him to do this, the first sword had recovered, and swung around to deliver a swift pommel strike to his shin. He had the chance to turn his leg slightly so it didn’t hit in the worst way, but it was a hit nonetheless. Once again, he was forced to move back a step as the three swords renewed their attack, and this time two more of them joined in as well.

At this point, it was impossible for Isaac to advance at all, and it took everything he had not to be completely taken down by the storm of swords surrounding him. Every time he parried or blocked one, two more would come in at an open point and hit him with either the pommel or the flat of the blade.

For the combatant, it would probably feel as though this went on for hours, although in reality Isaac only had about a quarter of a minute to be knocked around before both of the adversaries stepped through the portal and vanished. The swords followed Miyasi, pulling back and vanishing quickly into the portal as well.

Once they were through, the portal shook for a second before collapsing in itself and leaving nothing behind.

As it vanished, so too did the restraints binding Annie, giving her freedom of movement again. Lias, now left with nothing to shoot at and nothing else here, ran forward to where Isaac was, calling, “
Are you alright?

Any wounds Isaac would have sustained would be mostly superficial, all bruises with only a few minor cuts.

Meanwhile, as Harry moved to escape, the author caught the arm that hadn’t touched Elyssia and said, quietly but loud enough for him to hear clearly, “
I don’t think that’s a good idea. Listen. There’s someone coming.

Although her voice itself sounded as calm as it had been, she had taken a few steps further down the stairs and was facing the turn leading up with closed fists. The look on her face was also quite a bit more serious than it had been up until this point.

From up the stairs, those attempting to leave would hear the sound of footsteps. For the moment, they were faint, but there were multiple of them, and they seemed to be descending at a fairly quick pace.

As for Rory’s quest for plunder and riches, well, he would be quite disappointed. The only thing in this room was the sarcophagus, and while he could certainly attempt to bring it with him it was quite large and would be very difficult to carry along. The components could be taken apart, but it was unclear if any of them would be worth anything in an incomplete state. It was unclear, but unlikely.

With the disappearance of those in the room, the writer began backing slowly into it, eyes still on the steps. As she did, she announced, “
There’s company.
” so that everyone, not just the few that had been far enough up to hear it before, were aware of the fact.

" Better than I've got any right to be after trying that, " Isaac admitted with a short, self-deprecating laugh - relaxing his combat stance and lowering his sword, his fresh bruises stinging with his movements. The man had been well and truly shot down in his attempts at stopping the escape, unsurprisingly, yet even so he felt a hint of pride in his gut knowing that he had put up a decent fight against what he knew was a far superior opponent. Coming away with what superficial injuries he did after doing such a thing... Really, he was lucky.

Precisely why he had tried in the first place after being such a staunch advocate of not fighting them wasn't clear. However, if anyone had questions about that they would have to be asked another time - the author declared that they had company.

Battered but far from broken Isaac turned to the stairs, his moment of relaxed guard lost with this news. His thoughts raced - options of who could be on their way down few in number - and only two possibilities really stuck out as feasible right now. Regardless of which it was, he had few options with being trapped in a room with their only escape blocked by incoming unknowns. He quickly moved towards the stairs.

" Everyone, either side of the stairs - backs to the walls, don't stand in the open! " He exclaimed at a similar volume to the author's warning, scooping up his rifle as he moved into position on the left side of the stairs where he could peer around and see whoever rounded the spiral - weapon raised enough for any who appeared to easily spy it and move back around the corner of the steps where they wouldn't be in line of sight. It would be pretty clear what he was getting them all to do - placing them in a better position to negotiate with whoever was coming down, instead of being stood out in the open where they could be gunned down easily.
