All those who took action didn’t get very far; magic disabled people or weapons. Rory and Elizabeth were ready to defend themselves, though they did not have to. After the blades fought Isaac, they followed their caster into the portal and that was that.

There was no time to talk. Footfall came from above, and riches never materialized below. Isaac ordered everyone on either side of the wall.

One step ahead of you, Elizabeth thought to herself. She was already near the exit, knees bent, dainty frame useful for hiding.

Rory jogged to the wall, hands on his revolvers but not withdrawn just yet. Who the newcomers were, only time would tell.

Harry Richard

Harry grit his teeth in frustration. More trouble. Even if the new arrivals weren't hostile, they would likely have a great many questions about what happened, and that would be a hassle. But that was the best case scenario: lacking any other suspects, whoever was coming might assume that they were responsible for the massacre, or they might decide there could be no witnesses.

"Goddess damn it!" He cursed under his breath, as he took a position next to Isaac. He kept his hands on his shotgun, but he would not raise it until he received some indication of who these people were.

Annie was shocked that she was in magical net that bind her to stop her because she was running towards the portal to get answers. She heard what Storm said to the group. She felt scared and very confused. She tried to wiggle out of the net but couldn't.

Then the portal closes and she was free from the magical net. She still in shocked and heard what someone comment. She nodded and moved either side of the stairs. She got her gun ready to fight if needed to.

Underground Vault

The writer took Isaac’s advice immediately, flattening herself against the wall at the end of the line of people on the same side he had situated himself. With no weapons on her, all she could really do was just make herself as little of a target for whatever was going on as possible. She did, however, withdraw one of her notebooks and begin scribbling furiously in it, the concentration for what she was writing clear on her face.

Lias, on the other hand, didn’t join everyone else. She instead ran over to behind the altar, taking a prone position with the crossbow pointed towards the stairway. Although it wouldn’t have been a good spot for more than her, the altar gave enough cover that a singular person could be effectively shielded behind it, allowing her to have a line of fire should someone come charging down the staircase.

The footsteps continued until they were loud enough to be very close, and then stopped. Those looking up the stairway would notice a flash of movement, but, like they had either hoped or expected, nobody came charging into their line of fire. They couldn’t hear any voices, so if whoever was up there was trying to figure out a plan they were not doing it in an audible manner.

Strangely enough, though, nothing seemed to happen. For several moments, which likely seemed like an eternity to those stuck at the bottom of the stairs, there was no response at all after the footsteps stopped. Nobody made any demands, or even attempted to have a conversation at all. It was a stalemate simply because it looked like nobody had any desire to make the first move.

That finally changed in a big way when the time had stretched on long enough to seem like forever, although the beginning of the end wasn’t exactly flashy. It began with a noise that sounded like rolling, although in the darkness of the stairs it wasn’t clear what that might be about.

The rolling noise was small, and was continually punctuated by a noise that sounded like something metal was tapping on the stone.

By the time anyone might have realized what it actually was, it was too late. A small metal canister bounced down the stairs, rolling off the last and into the pile of bodies with a quiet splat. Almost immediately, smoke began billowing out of the canister spreading out through the room much faster than anyone might expect for such a small device. At first, it only obscured vision, blocking off sight of more than a few feet for anyone in the room. That would be enough to allow a charge, though, something that anyone with combat tactics knowledge would be able to tell at a glance.

That also meant they probably didn’t want to move forward into the stairs, since it would put them in extreme close quarters with an unknown number of assailants. However, should any of them decide that doing such was actually the correct idea, they would only make it to the first step before being repelled by what felt like a solid wall. There was nothing that they could see when running into this obstacle, but something was nonetheless blocking their path.

In the end, the only option was to stay in the room, at least for the time that they had available. Moving around it would net them nothing, as the smoke had spread abnormally fast throughout the entire area. While they might be most worried about whoever was on the stairs moving in at first, it would become clear that wasn’t their biggest problem. A short time after the smoke had first enveloped them, the senses of all in the cloud would begin to become foggy. Movements would get sluggish, and then the world would start spinning until all the strength would leave their limbs and they would collapse to the floor.

There wouldn’t even be anything clearing in the smoke cloud by the time everyone’s world went dark.

A Dream, Perhaps

Flashes of motion would come into vision. For each, it was different, and for some, it might not even happen at all. Little was able to be made out, and less was clear. Some heard voices, others saw lights, and a few might have even been able to see the blurred outlines of figures moving about. Even those that were aware could not move, but the thoughts likely never entered their minds in the brief span that they were aware.

Only one thing was clear, and it was clear to all even if they had felt nothing else. It was the feeling of something , something strange yet something familiar, something wrong yet something right. It felt as though it had belonged all along, even while part of it screamed of an invader. It was a fire that did not burn, yet still spread through the senses in a dazzling stream of darkness.

And then, there was nothing again, and all returned to the torpor from which they had been roused.

-----

Unknown

The senses of all would eventually return, with the last true memory being the stone floor that all had rested their heads upon. There was no pain, nothing to indicate that there had been any lasting harm, and no injuries to be found once the individuals found their ability to stand. The sensations from outside the realm of physical perception still lingered, but only just, likely making some wonder if it had even happened at all.

The first image to enter everyone’s vision would be a silver surface above them, and when their vision had cleared it would reveal that they were staring at a metal ceiling. Several small lights were embedded in it, shining brightly into the room where they were situated. The vision to each person was the same, as would be the revelation that they were each lying in a bed. To their right was a wall, which the bed was up against, and opening to their left would be a few feet of open space between the edge of the bed and the next wall.

When those in the beds would sit up, or at least take a look around, they would find that they were each in a small room that was about fifteen feet long and ten feet wide. Behind the bed would be an opening into a small bathroom, while the other side held what looked like a very modern door without any handles or knobs. There was a small box above it with a green light on the front. With the exception of the bed, there was nothing else in the room itself.

Everyone would be missing weaponry and equipment, and they would all be wearing the same thing: a simple white pair of pants and shirt, both made of somewhat thick material. A pair of shoes and socks would be sitting between where the bed sat and where the door was.

Should anyone approach the door, it would slide open, and reveal another, larger room beyond.

Annie was hidden next to everyone else who was in that room waiting for the enemy come attack them. Then a she heard something strange and a few seconds later she saw that it was a canister coming down the stairs with smoke coming out of it. That's when she knew she was screwed and it made her terrified of what was going to happen next. She tried to cover her face with her shirt but it didn't work and clasped on the floor.

She can see blurred outlines of figures moving about where ever she was. She couldn't move and her mind was still cloudy. Her body felt weird but felt right and her body felt like fire but didn't burn her. She felt darkness graining on her again and it did.

Annie laying on a weird bed as she was waking up from the strange smoke that they gave her. Slowly she opened her eyes and glanced around the room without raising her head trying to figure out where she was and felt really confused what was going on. All she remembered was being in the basement with the group. She slowly sat in a sitting precision and realized she wasn’t dizzy or weak or pain. Then she stood up and explored the room. She checked out the bathroom and slashed water on her face. After that she found socks and shoe that she put them on. She also realized that her clothes was different and her weapons are gone.

Then she went to the door that slid open. She was scared got to threw the door. She got brave and went threw the door to get to the other room because she was curious to find out what’s going on here.

Whilst most stood by the wall, Lias took cover behind the altar, but also took notes.
Footfall, flashes, inactivity. A smoking canister broke silence. Elizabeth gasped.

“Whah deh foohk?” Rory complained.

Amidst smoke and coughing, and no means to escape...

Rory eventually awoke, or perhaps he dreamt? He sat up and scanned the area, then checked his legs. He wasn’t glad to be replete of his gear.

“How in deh foohk!” he cursed as he got up. “Ey! Where deh hell are me t’ings? Ya foohkin’ little shits!” The door slid open, as if welcoming him. So he stepped through without a care for footwear. “Ey! Who deh hell be ‘round here ‘n screwin’ ‘round?”

Meanwhile, Elizabeth awoke as well, presumably elsewhere. She sat up.

“Umm...hello?” There did not seem to be an answer. Where am I? What’s going on? Did someone change my clothes? Her eyebrows raised and her eyes widened at that thought. She hugged her knees and sighed. She noticed the shoes and socks on the floor. “Well, at least there aren’t any bodies or guns...”

Harry Richard

"Back!" Harry had shouted when he heard the sound of something metal bouncing down the staircase. There was nothing to take cover behind, so all he could do was flatten himself against a corner.

He saw the metal canister roll down, and immediately expected some sort of explosion. No explosion came. Instead, it began to billow smoke.

They were going to charge, he concluded. He raised his gun and kept it trained on the room's entrance. The smoke crept closer toward him and he attempted to cover his mouth and nose with his jacket, but inevitably he ended up breathing some of it in.

He realized at once that this was no mere smoke screen, as the world began to go foggy. He dropped to his knees and was vaguely aware of the gun falling from his hand, before suddenly his mind went alert again as he realized he was unarmed. His hand gripped the holstered revolver, and tried to pull it out, yet somehow he lacked the strength. Then he lost his balance, and fell onto his side.

His hand blindly fumbled across the floor for the shotgun. Between the smoke and the fading vision, it was impossible to see. His fingers brushed something, but there was no way of knowing if it was his weapon or one of his fallen companions. It didn't matter, because everything soon went dark.

-----

He was vaguely aware of something happening around him. He did not know if it was a dream, or if he was still partially conscious. Or maybe he was dying. Was this what it felt like to die?

-----

Then he awoke. He wasn't dead, at least not as far as he could tell. He was in a silvery room, wearing simple, clean, white clothes. His hands instinctively fell to where his belt and all its pouches and holsters should have been, but there was nothing there. There was no sign of his clothes or his equipment anywhere in the room, save for a pair of shoes that weren't his.
