Josie stood at the pinball machine, gazing down at its intricacies, fingers over the paddle buttons on sides - poised for victory. It was a long battle, but no where near record setting. She really wasn't that good anyway, just optimistic. If optimism could replace skill, she'd be great at everything.

Yet, she stood over the machine in defeat. This time looking at her soft reflection on the plastic covering. She was still getting used to her new appearance after the operation. Her hair had gone snow white, instead of the rich brown it used to be. It still had a slight curl to it, and fell several inches below her shoulders. She wore it pushed to the right with an undercut on the left. She liked the look, but it seemed to be hit or miss with the guys.

And for some god forsaken reason, the colour seemed to drain from her left eye. They both used to be so, so absolutely green. Universities that spend 80% of student tuition on landscaping couldn't achieve a floral green to rival the colour of her eyes. But alas, her left iris had paled and had hints of red now. She didn't care for that look.

She left the pinball machine. ~At least we're all changed here,~ she thought as she began to wander around level 6 to find something else to do.

Sergeant Gary Riley

"Hell if I know." Came Gary's response as he heard someone coming up from behind, a familiar voice. He turned and recognized him as none other than Miles Wayne. "...Lieutenant." He added on, taking his military career as serious as ever.

"But it probably has something to do with all the **** that happened on the lower levels. If it's anything else, I have no clue. But we'll find out when we get there, at least." Who knew, maybe it would be some sort of infiltration job and he would get to shoot the ******* who killed his friend and all those other soldiers?

Sure, they may have been held against their will. But they came here voluntarily, had they not? And with those abilities, there was no way they could just be let out onto the streets. But in some futile attempt at freedom they murdered over a dozen good men, and the only thing they accomplished was locking themselves in to starve. However desperate they might have been, that couldn't be justified.

"But honestly sir, I thought that you would have known more than me. Being a higher rank and all."

Hand outstretched, Casper gripped the trigger, the plastic pistol responding a flashing LED alongside a dramatic “peeew*. Four more times did the gun pew in rapid succession, each landing dead centre in the heads of the enemy silhouettes. Content with the carnage before him, the faceless character walked forward a few paces, before turning towards a firing line of what appeared to be an encampment consisting of several large turrets. In a heartbeat, their barrels lit up as the screen faded into nothingness.

“Oh, come on! That’s horse… poodles” Placing the gun carefully on the pedestal, Casper waited for the results to appear on screen.

“Game over – New high score! 2nd place – ‘CAPR - 15,620 points’”.

To put this in perspective, the third highest player in the game was sitting somewhere in the low hundreds – but this was to be expected, he mused to himself, as the game itself was played directly against the computer... and that computer was a relentless opponent. Still, the idea of coming 2nd bothered him – It wasn’t that he had been beaten, but rather that he had come a close second to this person in nearly every game he tried.

Hearing the feint patter of footsteps, Casper turned to see Josie leave the game centre. Pausing to admire her vivacious after image, he began to wonder what the wavers said about fraternisation between subjects. Shaking his head to clear away the thought, he considered that those scientists would wholeheartedly endorse the endeavour – especially if it progressed their understanding of “biological sciences”.

With a longing sigh, Casper left the room, once again wandering out into the sixth floor corridor.

'Horse poodles' was the most ridiculous thing Josie had ever heard. It made no sense! She could come up with a thousand reasons why, for instance:

1) Horses are big.
2) Poodles aren't used in war.
3) ...

...

But that wasn't really the point. She knew Casper's voice when she heard it. Some of the things he said made her feel less alone in this place. It was easy to loose one's humanity in a facility like this, and Josie felt that she could make her peer's lives a little better by smiling and joking with them. But if Casper was around, she was smiling because she was happy.

There was a obvious physical attraction. She wasn't blind, but she was realistic. He was a tough, strong, sports-playing boy while she was... well, she was herself. But she still tried - it was no accident that he saw walking by, from behind.

Of course, she wanted to talk to him. She was about to turn around when she heard him sigh and begin to walk away. In a less than graceful manner, she turned and feigned ignorance. "Hey, Casper!" she called with surprise, "Any luck beating the computer today?" She walked with him, content to wander.

Miles chuckled as Sergeant Riley hastened to call him by his rank. There was nothing wrong with that, he just found his reaction a bit funny.

"Yeah those subjects seem pretty screwed." Miles scratched his chin. To think all that effort was for nought. He thought of them down there, locked in, farther from freedom than they ever were before. "To be honest, Sergeant, I'm just as clueless as you are when it comes to this stuff."

Dean stepped off the treadmill, wiping sweat off his forehead. Just another morning workout for Subject 66. He didn't know any of the other subjects very well, so he spent most of his time at the gym or in his room.

He made his way to the showers, not speaking to anyone along the way. That rebellion in the lower floors had shaken him more than he would admit. He hadn't been here for long, but he wanted out just like anyone else. It hadn't dawned on him how badly they wanted to keep the subjects in here.

"And that's the one flaw to this job." Gary said as they walked to their destination. "They keep us in the dark about everything. But, the pay is great and we don't get much trouble aside from the occasional problematic mutant. So there's not a lot to complain about. And it's not like we were always told everything in the regular army anyways."

He noticed Miles had mentioned the subjects, clearly following his train of thought. Gary took a few seconds to consider what circumstances led them here, but then remembered what they had done after arriving here, and once again that had a way of erasing most of his sympathy. "Let's just get to the office."

Medical Ward

It’s likely that it is some effect of the mutation.
” Dr. Vellian told Annie, giving her a smile to try and reassure her that it wasn’t something to worry about. “
The process doesn’t normally take effect this soon, but if it is then you don’t need to worry. It won** hurt you even if it does show up now.
*

There was more she might have said, but it was at this moment that Rena decided to get up and start to run. At first, she did*’t try to stop her, as many subjects had done this before and it was best to let them, rather than restrict them from doing anything. That would give most people a feeling of oppression that wasn’t what the subjects here were supposed to be feeling.

However, when she started running, that was when Vellian called out, “
Rena, wait! You can** leave yet! The door won’t open for you!
” Along with the cal, she ran past the beds and down to the front, the space between the beds and the wall that Rena had taken just a moment before. Chasing after the young woman wouldn’t solve much, but she at least wanted to be able to see what she was doing without the view being obstructed.

Truthfully, she did*’t expect her to stop. Something was wrong here, and until Rena calmed down and would talk with her there wasn’t really a way to rectify it. Her immediate reaction to run wasn’t normal for someone who knew what they had signed up for, and since the reports had indicated that all three of these subjects had indeed willingly signed up - which was the way it had to be, given the amount of deaths that had come from attempting to force it - it could mean one of a few things. She might not have expected this, although that was unlikely as their analysis of her during the explanation had indicated that she indeed understand.

There might be a side effect of the mutation on her mind, but the brain activity that had been abnormal had not been significant enough to signify an immediate descent into panic.

The most likely situation, but also the most worrying one, was that she did*’t remember any of it. That could indicate a memory loss of some kind, but the severity of such a case couldn’t be seen until there was time to actually speak with her. There had only been one other case of mutation-induced memory loss, and that one hadn’t cleared up yet.

Meanwhile, true to the Doctor’s words, the door would not open for Rena when she came to it. There was a small pad on the side of the door, which looked like a scanner of some kind, but there was nothing else to indicate what might cause the door to open.

Central Security Office

The entrance to the office was the same as every other security door in the facility: a panel of reinforced metal that slid to the side to open and had no **** or handle of any kind. The panel next to the door was coded in some way that touching it would allow authorized personnel access to the room. Nobody was quite sure how the panels worked, as they did not use fingerprint scans or anything like that, but there was no denying that they worked perfectly. Had the soldiers and doctor come at a different time, they would have found that the door would not open for them.

As it was, a touch would make the door slide open, and they would be able to enter. It was unlikely that any of them had been to the central security office before, as it was somewhere that was typical restricted to project officials. There were a total of four security offices on the first level, each one equipped with camera access and some defense controls, but they were all subject to a final say from the central office. Naturally, if central did*’t veto them, they were automatically allowed to proceed, and usually that was the case.

Still, all of the major orders came from central, including the intercom voice that nobody had ever seen the source of. It was also where Alexei Juradis spent the majority of his time, and where Talbot typically issued all of his personal orders from.

The interior of the office was fairly spacious, or would have been if the entire thing hadn’t been taken up by camera feeds and computers. Two of the four walls were entirely covered by screens showing nearly every aspect of life in the facility. It wasn’t all of the cameras that were in the facility, of course, but one could assume that the display on each screen wasn’t limited to a single camera.

The third wall was taken up by a desk with what looked like an extremely powerful computer and three monitors that held a split display. What was currently on it looked like a design of some kind, but what it was for and what it did weren’t clear to someone who was just looking in on it without any real technical knowledge.

Inside the office were two people: Michael Talbot and Alexei Juradis. The latter was sitting at the computer, working at a very quick pace on whatever was on the screen. He did*’t look as though he was expending a great deal of effort, and in fact looked a lot more composed and focused than he did whenever anyone ran across him in the hallway or at a meal.

Talbot, on the other hand, was looking at the camera feeds, in particular one focused on the dining area. Subjects were starting to fill up the tables, most of them clustering with the various groups that they had formed over their time here. A few sat alone, however, one being a brown-haired young woman over in the corner and another being a middle-aged man that looked though he was finishing up already.

As soon as all three of them were there, Talbot said, without looking away from the screens, “
You three are going to the lower levels. There’s something I need you to confirm.

His lack of greeting and habit of getting straight to the point was typical when it came to interacting with soldiers. He did not dislike them, but they were here to do a job and he expected them to do it. However, the fact that he did not start up again right away indicated that if they wanted to ask any questions before he got to details, now would be the time to do it.
