Staff Living Quarters

The staff quarters was unlike the subject quarters in the fact that there were always people coming and going. Guards and doctors worked in shifts, since the nature of the facility demanded twenty-four hour readiness, and most of the time the actual timing of the shifts was decided amongst themselves. There was a schedule of what they should be doing, but as long as someone was recorded as on duty and this could be confirmed the executives did*’t seem to mind. What mattered was that there was someone who could be on call, and only in specific situations did it matter who that person was.

This morning happened to be one of those specific cases. As the majority of the soldiers who took the night patrolling shifts or intercessions duties began to show up back in the barracks, the intercom system sparked to life for a brief moment. Unlike the systems in most facilities, there was almost no difference between the sound that came from this one and speaking to someone face-to-face. A lot of those who worked here got confused by it at first, looking around whenever they were called to see who around them was speaking, but those that had been here for a while would have gotten to notice that the voice who spoke the majority of the time - a female one that sounded fairly young - was never present outside the intercom itself. It did*’t belong to the director or any of the other executives, and most of the soldiers and doctors knew each other well enough to recognize that it wasn’t any of them either.

It was this voice that spoke, announcing, “
Seargant Riley and Lieutenant Wayne, Commander Talbot would like to speak with you. Report to the central security office on level 1.

There was a pause, and then the voice added, “
Doctor Martin, your presence is requested as well.
” before it ceased to speak.

A few mutterings followed this announcement, but not many. Although it wasn’t abnormal for someone to get called, multiple people being called by Talbot wasn’t something that happened very often. Usually, when he called for anyone personally it was because there was something important that needed to be done, although he never called the same people more than once.

Medical Ward

Only one of the three came back with any kind of positive response, and one did*’t answer at all. That wasn’t exactly a positive sign, although Doctor Vellian had seen worse in her time here. In truth, she wasn’t sure why someone as young as Annie was even here, but that wasn’t her decision to make.

It was the other girl that she was most concerned about, though. In the tests while they were still asleep, they had found that the girl’s brain seemed to be operating in a strange manner, and the way she was acting indicated that something was seriously wrong. While she did*’t have anything similar to compare it to out of the subject cases, the look of confusion and anxiety on the girl’s face spoke of something beyond a simple lack of acclimatization to the current situation. The mutations had all been successful in terms of not damaging her physical form, but if they had taken some sort of effect on her mind…

*
What’s the matter?
” she asked Annie, deciding to make her the first of the two she would speak to. The third one seemed fine, and she could try and confirm that in a moment. “
Is there anything wrong?

Annie heard the doctor's questions but she was still in a panic attack that it made it hard to answer. She took her time to answer. She didn't answer the question but asked in a panic voice,"where am I? Who are you?" Maybe if she got those answers she would calm down and will be able to answer. She was still shaking with fear. She felt her body getting really warm and felt a strange energy start to grow in her. Then she asked still in a panic voice,"why do I feel this way?" -Dances-

Medical Ward

If she could have frowned without likely making the situation worse, Doctor Vellian would have. Why was this little girl here, and why was she acting like nothing was going on? Talbot wasn't stupid and he knew what happened with unwilling subjects, but every time something like this happened she always worried that he was trying something new out and that it would end badly.

"
My name is Doctor Vellian.
" she told Annie, making her voice as gentle and soothing as she could. "
You're in a testing facility for the project you signed up for. You remember that, right? Don't worry, you're not in any danger or trouble.
"

The panic in Annie's voice made her worry, but that worry did not extend to her voice or her features. That wouldn't help at all, and she was aware that calming the girl down was the first thing that needed to happen. What Annie asked after just confirmed that, since there really wasn't any reason for her to be asking why she felt different. The subjects weren't supposed to feel different right now, and since everything had come back with a negative on negative physical effects, there was something else happening.

A look at the monitors confirmed it, although it wasn't quite clear what they confirmed. Something wasn't quite right, but it wasn't a life-threatening thing. In fact, everyone here was in perfect health, so anything that happened from here on wouldn't be caused by that.

"
What's wrong, exactly? How do you feel different?
" she asked, the concern in her voice for the girl completely genuine. She cared quite a bit about the people she was supposed to be taking care of, regardless of who they were.

Annie was happy that the doctor has answered her questions so far that made her feel so much better. She said in a nervous voice," Nice to meet you Doctor Vellian. My name is Annie Wells. I remember that a little bit. It's a lot to take in when you just wake up in a strange place. Thank you for answering my questions." She really likes this doctor that made her feel more comfortable. Now she knows she's in no danger or trouble that also made her feel calmer. She was still very scared and trying to keep the panic away but it's really hard to. Her body still has the effects of being in panic from before. Then said to Doctor Vellian in a nevous voice,"My body feels really hot and a strange energy is growing in me. I don't know what it is. I am scared of it." -Dances-

Gary had been sitting in one of the common areas of the barracks, still in his uniform, deep in thought. Unlike some of the other guards, he had virtually no ties or connections to the outside world. What he was thinking about was what happened the lower levels.

His friend was down there...

Dammit. He had lost friends and comrades back when he was part of the military, and not a security guard in a top secret facility, but he had never expected to lose them here.

His thoughts were interrupted when the intercom turned on, and he looked up at the mention of his name. Talbot wanted to speak with him? That was both interesting and unusual. And then he began to wonder if it had anything to do with that little rebellion. That had to be it, right? One unusual event usually leads to another unusual event.

Well, there was only one way to find out. Gary couldn't say he liked the guy much, but there were many others who didn't either. But orders were orders, and this was the guy who allegedly commanded the entire security force.

Sighing, Gary stood up and walked out the door. When one of the soldiers sent him a questioning glance as if Gary knew why he was being called, Gary simply shrugged. He walked out the door and began making his way through the hallway, heading to the central security office.

Cogito Ergo Sum

It helped to have anybody to share the dark-haired girl's feelings. The doctor, Vellian, shared an askance look between the two. Proof enough, the dark-haired girl concluded instinctively, that whatever had been done, or was going to be done, was wrong. She itched to move; this lukewarm bed caused her more unease as she acknowledged it wasn't hers. She held still, nevertheless -- she didn't want to alarm Doctor Vellian just yet, and the dark-haired girl's internal experience seemed contrary to the little blonde girl. Anxiety wrapped around her chest, but other than a thrumming heartbeat, there was a curious nothing.

The doctor's explanation was something. Conspiratorial images sprung to mind; this place wasn't quite as simple as a hospital after all. A fresh layer of caution demonised what the dark-haired girl almost came to feel were normal surroundings. Were there nothing else competing for her emotions, the dark-haired girl might have imploded at that instant, but a sense of illumination emerged from the core of her brain. It made sense that something slightly askew would be for an exceptional purpose. A focused breath was the best she could do to restrain the overwhelming questions growing in her head.

She didn't remember a project, and she didn't remember signing up for anything -- any person wouldn't forget something so deliberate, right?

It was a touch of relief to see that the little girl had something to her name -- literally a name, in fact. Annie Wells. The young man's unconcerned looks likewise hinted that he wasn't troubled by such circumstances. A feeling of pressure abruptly formed over the raven-haired girl. As if she needed it, her apparent solitude in this cloying ignorance was more proof that she was exceptionally amiss. And of course, there was no more natural reaction to such terror than to avoid it. The dark-haired girl shuffled herself off the bed with what haste she could manage.

Her toes dipped onto the floor. No sooner had she bumped her weight off the edge of the bed did the impeccable surface turn to jelly. A sensation like tumbling sand rushed down her legs as the rest of her body revived. The second step after the first was even worse, and the third and fourth more still -- by the fifth, she had passed the worst of it, and upon the sixth she felt dominion over herself again. The dark-haired girl looked once at Doctor Vellian, still preoccupied with little Annie, and sidelong down either side of the room; her eyes settled on the first irregularity in the otherwise seamless room. A good candidate for a door.

Of course, it sent the raven-haired girl's heart pounding to think about turning her back on the doctor before they'd even shared a word. Any kind of consequence could be awaiting her, but that only made it easier to move. She took a step back, and then another, and hoping she'd chosen the right moment, took off down the medical bay.

Distracting heat was the first thing to catch up with her, and then her unbound hair whisking her face; no part of her body wanted this, but the apparent exit drew closer by the second.

She looked back just once, wary of pursuers but reluctant to clip one of the several carts or machines on the fringe of her path. What manner of antagonists were preparing to beset her because of this? Which of them would have come after her regardless?

Nearing the apparent door, she extended her hand for any kind of handle or mechanism.

She ran harder.

Doctor Samuel Martin

"SAMMY!" A man shouted from behind the door. He kept banging on it, until he got a response. "Its my day to sleep in. Go away." Doctor Martin said as he rolled to look at the door. It opened, and another doctor stepped through. Samuel had a long standing agreement with another doctor that each one would get a single day off in the week if the other covered it. "Talbot wants you." He said looking as if someone had died.

"What does that stiff want, doesn't he know its my day off." Sam groaned, and sat up. "We technically don't get days off and you know that." Said the other annoyed with his colleague. "Alright... alright." Sam replied as the other doctor left the room. He was in a coffee stained grey tank top, and some red boxer briefs. ~Better look decent...~ He thought making his way to the closet. He pulled out a nice white dress shirt and slid it on, and grabbed a pair of khaki cargo pants.

~Won't have time for my morning coffee, now they've done it.~ Doctor Martin was not a morning person, and mostly took night shifts when he could. He had finished getting dressed, and looked into the mirror. His red tie was not completely straight, but it didn't bother him to much. On the way out he grabbed his lab coat, and put it over his arm.

He wasn't to far from the central security room, but he knew he might be late considering he was asleep when the announcement was made. ~I better not be the only one that got called, i haven't done anything out of the ordinary. I know, its probably a promotion since i'm doing such a fantastic job.~ Sam chuckled at the thought. He was very well trained for what he was doing, but he only did as much as the other doctors. He saw no point in getting moved around when he was content in his position.

"And so I says to her, that's not pudding, that's my wife!"

Miles was with three other uniformed guards, standing around a water dispenser with plastic cups in hand. They were all laughing uncontrollably at some joke a middle-aged suburban father would make, water spilling from their cups onto the floor.

Their jolly old time was interrupted by the intercom calling Miles to speak with Talbot. The others straightened up and looked at him questioningly.

"You're in some deep **** now, man." One of them warned him.

"It's probably nothing." Miles tried to assure them. "Nah, that's bull crap. I'm probably screwed." He shrugged and walked off, the others watching him as if he were on his way to the grave. He figured this had something to do with that rebellion in the lower floors. Talbot was an enigmatic officer, nobody knew his inner workings.

As he made his way to the central security office, he caught up to the other soldier called down, Gary Riley. "What do you think he wants, Riley?"
