Come on, Josie! Don’t make me come out like a sore loser and admit those games are unwinnable by design!
” Casper smiled in mock exasperation.

Slowing his gait to a more comfortable pace, Casper was Careful to avoid Josie’s gaze as the walked – or more specifically, her captivating smile that reminded him so much of his younger sister. It was hard to rationalise how one smile could be different from another – It was just something that was. A reminder of why he was here.

Casper was quick to change the subject. “
So, you headed for a bite too?
” he asked in his usual smooth tone.

“You’re right, I’d haaate to harsh your ego,” Josie jested, laughing at her own humor as she looked up at him. He was probably more than half a foot taller than she was * as such, she and her short legs appreciated the change of pace. “Keep smiling like you do and I’ll pretend that you’re at least better than I am!”

She couldn’t help herself to add that last comment before allowing him to change the subject. Talking too much was one of her many flaws, perhaps, but at least she was aware of it. Though it rarely filtered much. “You know, Obi, I could totally go for waffles,” she replied, with no explanation for the nickname, “So sure, I’ll join you if you don’t mind.”

Obi referred to Obi-Wan Kenobi, who became a ghost like Casper the Ghost. This wasn’t an uncommon practice for Josie, so Casper may or may not understand it depending on how well he knew her.

As expected, Red was only too happy about Subject 13's acceptance of her approach. The redhead, flashing a grin at the other girl, quickly dug into her meal with gusto, pausing to listen only when Alison (that was her name! Good thing that came up before she had to say it herself!) spoke up.

" Ish e' wassn willin' e' wouldn 'of come! " She stated with a mouth full of egg, somehow managing to not splatter any across the table. Remembering her manners, or whatever semblance of manners she'd been taught before coming here, Red promptly swallowed her mouthful. After a brief fit of coughing from almost choking on said mouthful, she continued like nothing happened. " And they wouldn't serve soup if it wasn't breakfast! "

Utterly oblivious to the contempt her seating choice had arisen within certain other people in the cafeteria, Red was perfectly happy with the current arrangement. Then again, when she wasn't happy she would usually make it known. Loudly. Maybe it was better to just play along with the girl who could force-feed you your own lower half, but of course... She was no psychopath. Right?

When Dean didn't answer Alison's question right away, the perky midget felt it was her duty to take over. Because, you know, that was just how she rolled.

" This here is Dean! " She answered, a momentarily free hand swerving around to slap him enthusiastically on the back. Thankfully not with her ridiculous strength, but still more than was necessary. It could be tough to regulate your strength, especially when it was bundled away in a small package like her. " I don't think he talks much. Or maybe he does? He hasn't said much today so I dunno! "

Before Miles had gone to meet the others at the entrance to the lower levels, he went back to his quarters to pick up his service weapon, a standard Glock, and two flashlights. Talbot might've said weapons weren't needed, but nobody was gonna listen to that. Had to exercise that Second Amendment whenever you got the chance.

Gary Riley had the same idea, bringing his sidearm along as they met up at the entrance to level 9. "Hope we're not interrupting anything." Miles joked as the team approached the hopelessly bored guards. "You're Forty-Three, I assume?" He asked the subject.

-----

As the two girls exchanged greetings, Dean sat quietly, though he chuckled at Alison calling him an 'unwilling dining partner.' When Alison introduced herself to him, Red replied for him and gave him a hearty slap on the back. As soon as she uttered the words, he braced himself, fully expecting to be paralyzed, but then it seemed like she was restraining herself now.

Anyway, Dean shook her hand and gave her a warm smile. He noticed her eyes—light blue. He never really noticed how much he liked blue eyes. Normally he liked brown eyes on a girl. Or green. Or grey. Damn, he was down here for too long.

"Sorry if I seem to quiet, I just uh..." He glanced down at the cup of milk in his hand which he was keeping cool with his powers. "I'm just not much of a morning person." What time was it? ****, he didn't know.

Correct. Given the information I have available, it appears that you have the ability to project a copy of yourself that can interface with reality.
” the hologram told Jack. “
As you likely were aware, the amount of information your brain was attempting to process was too much for it to handle, which is likely an effect of it not fully adapting to the mutation. From what I can tell by mental scans, a new area of your brain has formed and several neural paths have re-written themselves to better process the information received from the projection, and their functionality is not yet at peak capacity.

It paused for a moment, as if to give him a chance to catch up, before continuing with, “
If you wish to attempt to figure out more for yourself, using it should be as simple as using any other part of your body. It will take some getting used to, and it will be difficult to control initially. I do not recommend attempting anything further until you have slept for at least eight hours and have eaten at least one full meal. Using your mutation uses energy just like anything else you can do, and until you can control the amount of energy you can put into the use it is not advisable to try while you have low energy reserves.

Meanwhile, the one monitoring Annie said nothing. The vital signs were noted, and because of that a small robotic arm extended from behind the end of the bed. Every bed had three, and they were all connected to various storages of drugs and the like that could be used by an automatic response program in the event of an emergency. Given the situation, it seemed that this qualified as an emergency, and so the arm reached out around the head of the bed, applying a small, transparent patch to Annie’s neck.

The effect was simple, and would be apparent soon after. It was a sedative, designed to calm Annie down and stop her from taking any actions that would imperil her own well-being. Given that there was nothing actually wrong with her, letting her rest would be the better cure to whatever problems she was having right now.

Although Doctor Vellian wanted to frown at the mention of Talbot, she refrained from doing so. There was no reason to give the girl a reason to be afraid when she did*’t need to, especially if Talbot’s identity was the only thing clearly known to her. It made some sense, given that he was the last thing she would have seen before going to sleep, and perhaps it meant they would have to work backwards to try and help her recover the memories she had lost.

Yes, his name is Michael Talbot. He’s the one in charge of bringing volunteers to the facility.
” she told Rena. “
You would have gone with him when you left home.

Unfortunately, Vellian wasn’t sure that particular memory could help with too much. What they needed was something from outside the facility, something that could link to the time before Talbot had showed up to bring her here. It was a pity; she couldn’t remember her parents at all, but she could remember Talbot’s name and face. Still, it did give something to possibly work with, and although the Doctor did*’* want to overload Rena with questions she felt it might be worthwhile to ask this one more and see if it got anywhere.

Do you just remember his name and face, or is there something you can remember that’s connected to him? A memory from when you first met him, perhaps?
* she asked.

Transition to Level 9

That’s me. Subject Forty-Three, Victor, that handsome *******, whichever you want to use is fine by me.
” he replied, offering a hand for them to shake. “
These two already know about the situation, so they*ll just make sure we’re guarded while we’re in there. Given their long history of successfully guarding boring places, I’m sure we’ll be in good hands. Right, boys?

The last two words were directed at the guards, who he turned to look at while saying. The guard on the right side of the door simply rolled his eyes, while the one on the left responded with an extremely deadpan, “Nope.”

Victor just grinned, turning back to face the group. “
They’ve already got a few cots set up for us in that room over there. Come on, I’ll explain why you’ll want them once we’re set up.

The room in question was right off to the side, about ten feet from the door. The room size was quite small, and by the various boxes stacked on the far side it was clear that it was made to be a supply room of some kind. Right now, it had four fold-out cots set up, two against the side walls and the other two set up in the center of the room. There wasn’t much space around them, but it was enough to at least get there and lie down without tripping over all the others.

You’re all going to want to lie down.
” Victor told them as he did that himself, taking the one against the wall that was closest to the level 9 entrance.

I mean, you could stand if you wanted to, but it won*t be pleasant afterwards. Once I send us through the door, we aren’t going to have control over our bodies anymore. Well, not much, since the commands to move are going to be re-routed or something. I don’t know the specifics, I just use it. Basically, if you’re standing when I send you out, you’re going to fall, and I doubt any of you want to take the chance of injury. Go ahead and lie down, and let me know when you’re ready.

Dining Hall

You’re sitting next to Red. Anyone would seem quiet in your place.
” Alison replied, smiling at the antics of the redhead. Although Red had never really been part of her group, she had been around long enough - longer than everyone except Julia, herself, and Twenty - that they had all known her somewhat well. It had helped that Red had been pretty friendly with just about anyone, and their group, being one of the stranger ones - especially once Thirty-Seven had become part of it - hadn’t been very popular outside of their members.

Taking a moment to take a sip of her coffee, Alison’s eyes moved away from the people sitting across from her for a moment, narrowing a bit when they stopped at the larger group but moving away from them when it looked like they were about to glare back. With the loss of her friends and the increasing prominence of what could only really be called her enemies, it wasn’t exactly the best situation she could have here.

And people might talk more if you did*’t drag them along and talk for them, you know.
” she added to the redhead, the smile accompanying the words telling Red that it was in jest. As she was continuing to talk, the more subdued tone that she had at the beginning was starting to lift, as though she had needed someone to talk to even though it looked like she was trying to avoid everyone.

It was at this point that someone else in the dining hall decided to make things a little less pleasant. The three executives of the large group had been muttering amongst each other for a little while now, and the youngest one, the telekinetic, made just the slightest move. His hand made a motion as though it was squeezing something, which would be interesting because there was nothing in it. It did have an effect, though, and that effect was exactly what the motion entailed and would be felt at a table across the hall.

Specifically, on the ass of one Red Hawkins.

With her back to pretty much the entire hall, she wouldn’t be able to see who had done it, but given that the large group was the only ones looking their way it wouldn’t be too difficult to figure out.

Gary shrugged and laid down on one of the cots, as requested. In truth, he was a bit uneasy about this whole ordeal. Leaving his body? What if he couldn't get back? What would it even feel like to leave his body in the first place? Never before had he been asked to put that much faith in a subject's abilities.

Taking a deep breath, he finally spoke - only two simple words. "I'm ready."
