Gary Riley

Gary shrugged and laid down on one of the cots, as requested. In truth, he was a bit uneasy about this whole ordeal. Leaving his body? What if he couldn't get back? What would it even feel like to leave his body in the first place? Never before had he been asked to put that much faith in a subject's abilities.

Taking a deep breath, he finally spoke - only two simple words. "I'm ready."

Rena

Rena nodded, relieved. Many little fires had lit in her head. Michael Talbot, although she couldn't say why he meant anything to her, was someone . Dr. Vellian didn't seem enthusiastic to hear his name, and Rena pretended to not notice; the relentless lighting magnified every thought that passed over the woman's face. Maybe there was something about him Rena didn't know, or maybe it wasn't an answer she found useful. The dark-haired girl suspected both were the truth and shrank under fresh anxiety.

The activity down the room was a welcome, morbid distraction. The beds were not just advanced, they were alive -- spindly robotic arms (like the legs of a crab, Rena thought) appeared to labour noiselessly over the little girl at no prompt of Vellian. The dark-haired girl stiffened, anticipating blood, but the silvery appendages relented well short of surgery. Rena coaxed her eyes to something innocuous -- Vellian's name tag -- to dodge an argument about her passing look of alarm. She shivered.

The motion unfurled a sudden sensation of cold in her mind. It spread to her shoulders, from there her gut and eventually to her knees and feet. It was the kind of feeling you only experienced when you were head deep in whatever was troubling you -- when you were staring down a blizzard, or facing the eye of a storm. And yet still she couldn't unstick Talbot's face from her thoughts.

The consuming sensation reminded her of...

"
Water,
" she answered, unaware the question had been asked.

"
Lots of water. Like I'm surrounded in it. I see his face.
" she continued. The image and the feeling pieced together faster than her words.

There was water: a clear barrier of cool water that stood around all around her and roared gently in her ears. Beyond the water was the face of a man, melted and warped by a bubbling white uprush that tinted the intense field of blue that was pressing against her.

Rena shuffled, imagining the sensation of water passing through her fingers. No matter how she turned her head, trying to sift around the image in her mind, the man's face wouldn't fully solidify for her.

"
I think I can see...
"

She squinted her eyes shut. In relative darkness, more detail flowed into the peak of her brain -- there was a brilliant red light that loomed over him. It reminded the girl of the way distant stars would shine in the night sky.

Then there was a woman, who like the man was inscrutable through the water. She extended her hand--

Sudden faintness overtook Rena, and she slumped harshly against the wall. She grasped her temples, as if to squeeze out the thick fatigue that'd just iced her mind, and groaned. She'd barely kept herself above the floor. It took a long moment for the worst of the cloying sensation to pass, and she coughed away the rest of it returning fully to her feet as soon as her body's internal compass was ready to keep her upright.

She shut her eyes, scrabbling to rediscover her focus. The feeling of cold was gone, and so were the man and the woman. There was just water. Frustration picked at Rena, who sighed.

"
S-sorry about that. I'm okay. Just dizzy.
" she said immediately. She rubbed her arm bashfully.

"
I was... submerged in water. And there were these two faces: a man and this woman,
" she said. She shook her head.

"
I don't think it was Talbot, though. And I've never seen the woman. I don't know, I couldn't make out much,
" The girl frowned. "
Sorry, guess I'm wasting your time. It didn't really make any sense... I think it was just a daydream or something.
" she shrugged.

"
I don't even like being in water.
" she added, unaware she felt that way until she said it.

The idea of subjecting her life to the mercy of water... something about it terrified her.

Annie felt the patch put on her neck and it freak her out because she didn't know what it was. She was able to pull it off. But the sedative still took effect. The sedative started to make her calm down slowly. But not fully. Also she felt so tired from using her power for the first time and everything else what happened so far. -Dances-

The dizziness was subsiding and now Jack was beginning to notice the fatigue that the hologram had mentioned. “Right,” Jack responded, not a hundred percent certain about what he had just been told. “Food and sleep sound good.”

Thrillled to have people to talk to (albeit this was a regular occurrence for her) Red was all too happy to listen to what Alison said, much like a normal person should. Dean claimed to not be a morning person, which spoke to Red on a deep level. After all, neither was she. It was once in a blue moon she was up this early!

She waited her turn to speak this time around, mostly because she was having a drink when Alison spoke and didn't want to spray her new friends with orange juice. After swallowing, and after the second comment directed at her, the feisty woman grinned impishly at the other girl.

" But people always walk so sloooow! My way, we can get somewhere fast and answer faster! Usually! " She replied, using her own special brand of logic to fight the false displeasure of her methods. Red was very active with her hands when speaking, making wild gestures and quick movements, just generally expressing herself in an even louder way through the medium of motion. Thus, when she quite sharply STOPPED making gestures and instead sat rather rigid all of a sudden... Well, it was cause to be concerned.

In the mind of the mini-hulk, somebody had just signed a waver.

While her expression had lost its smile all of a sudden, just as quickly it came right back to her, as if it never left in the first place. However, she now paid her food no mind as she placed her hands on the table and stood up, which made little difference given her tiny stature, and turned her head around, craning slightly to look all the way behind herself.

Now, there were not many people in the facility who would call Red smart. Truth be told, most people would probably say she had a few cards short of a full deck, or a similar one-liner. However, even she had the capabilities to put two and two together. So, seeing only a single, large group looking at her, as if watching for some kind of reaction, kind of helped her piece things together. Especially since she knew that Mr. 55 was a

telekinetic.

Red could be a touchy-feely person, there was no doubting that. She was all too happy to take people by the hand, put an arm around their shoulders (if she could reach), slap them on the back or even give some mighty bear-hugs. But lines could be crossed, and a line was crossed just a few moments ago, so naturally, retaliation was in order. Two wrongs, blah blah blah, who cared.

" I'll be back in just a second! " She told her two lunch-buddies, having turned back around to face them with her toothy grin. Of course, as she was speaking she was also reaching down towards the bench she'd been sat on, her fingers wrapping around the edge of the strong, solid metal. For subjects and staff who had been here long enough, this in itself was a warning of what was going to follow. The gesture wasn't something alarming, not to someone who hadn't seen it before, because this had only happened once in the past.

The shriek of straining metal pierced the calm cafeteria air as Red's monstrous muscles worked their magic on the sturdy structure of the dining bench. Good thing Dean and Alison were on the other side. No strain showed on the smiling face of the bundle of energy, as she all too casually tore the bench away from the ground with both hands. Metal bent and tore, concrete was upturned and the simple result was the girl standing there with about half of the entire bench in her grip.

" Gotta make sure someone knows to keep his hands to himself! " Already turning away as she spoke, Red broke into a run with the bench in hand, making a beeline straight for the silly little club table. Specifically, the silly little teenage boy who thought he was funny.

Miles shook Victor's hand as he introduced himself. He followed the Subject into the next room where the first step of this out-of-body experience would begin. "Shouldn't you buy me dinner first?" He said in a way that wasn't easy to tell that he was joking. Regardless, he went ahead and laid down in one of the cots.

"Just promise I'll have my clothes on when we get back." He told Victor, though he cast a glance at the two guards. "Don't want another Charleston repeat." He kept his arms at his side, his right hand kept close to his sidearm, before settling in and deciding he was ready.

----

"What's the rush, Red? Not like we're pressed on time down here." Dean said after Red expressed her impatience with the sluggish pace of life in the facility. Maybe Red just needed to... chill .

Damn, that was awful.

Dean was about halfway through his third bowl of cereal when the monstrous midget stood up and glared across the dining hall, right at one of the largest groups of subjects.

He sighed as she went off to deal with whatever it was that bothered her now. Dean turned around in his seat and leaned against the table, saying to Alison, "This ought to be fun."

Doctor Vellian listened to everything that Rena was saying, but it seemed to her that the young woman wasn’t able to fully process what she was remembering yet. The scenes mentioned gave no relevance to her, nothing that could really be worked with yet. Still, that did*’t mean what was said wasn’t interesting. If Rena was remembering real events, then there was something about this one that did*’t feel right. Why would she be looking out at other people from within a tank of water?

In addition, the bout of dizziness that the girl seemed to have in the middle of remembering was possibly linked to that. It might have been a coincidence, but Vellian had to consider that it was not just in case. Was there something she was trying not to remember? It wouldn’t make sense, since her file had shown that she had lived a perfectly normal life, so perhaps there was something else going on with her mind.

It would bear further study, but it did*’t seem that it would help her to push it further right now. Further investigation would have to wait until later, when the young woman was in a more stable state of mind. That wasn’t to say she wasn’t stable right now, but acclimatization to the facility - and the clearing of the fear of the unknown that it presented - would likely yield a more accurate recollection for her.

The alarmed look that had passed over Rena’s face when Rhamn(u)sia had been taking care of Annie had been pretty clear, but the Doctor declined to mention it because it seemed Rena did*’* want to discuss it. That was natural, as most subjects had not seen advanced robotics before, and especially not ones controlled by a program as sophisticated as Rhamn(u)sia. Even Vellian was astonished by the precision that the program handled such things and the processing capabilities that it had, but she supposed that it was something that should be expected at a project as advanced as this.

It’s alright, don’t push yourself to try to remember.
” she told Rena. “
It’ll come back to you in time. Just make sure to let me know if you do start remembering more, ok?

It was at this point that Rhamn(u)sia’s voice sounded from what appeared to be right behind Vellian, saying, “
Doctor, Subject Seventy-Six is clear for discharge. He is stable, although weakened by the manifestation of his ability. An escort has been sent for.

Thank you, Rhamn(u)sia.
* Vellian replied, to which there was no response. She then turned her attention back to Rena and asked, “
You can go as well, if you would like. The escort will show you to your room as well as anywhere else in the facility you would like to go.

Meanwhile, at Jack’s bed, the hologram was busy informing him, “
If you feel that you are well enough to walk, then you have been cleared for discharge from this ward. An escort has been sent for, and should be arriving shortly. If you would prefer to remain here, then you may do so, and if you would like to leave then please make your way to the area where Doctor Vellian is currently located.

Although he would have to walk past Annie’s bed to get there, the situation there seemed to have calmed down greatly. It seemed that the young girl was stable, her vital signs on the monitor only showing brief issues. Jack’s looked almost perfect, although they looked just slightly weak because of the expenditure of energy from his power usage. The situation over by the door looked to be a lot calmer as well, and looked from over here to have gone to a simple talk. There wasn’t any more violent actions, and the Doctor looked a lot more comfortable now than she had a short while before.
