The table that she had thrown was inside as well, as was any food or utensils that anyone had set on that table.

For a moment, there was only shocked silence from everyone watching. They had just seen the failure of something that had been taken for granted from day one, and right after the security had used it as a threat. Force cages were infinitely less threatening than an instantaneous mental disruption. and unless they wanted to kill the person inside they would have to escort the person out with a physical escort.

Then, out of the silence, someone started laughing. Alison’s eyes turned to where it was coming from to find that the source was Subject Forty-One. He was watching the proceedings with a huge grin on his face, and he was one of the few that did not look surprised. He was, in fact, still eating, looking as unconcerned as ever. The laugh halted as he took another bite of the mostly-eaten bagel that was sitting on the table in front of him, although when he finished chewing that bite he spoke up instead of resuming it.

She really called your bluff, Rhamn(u)sia!
* he called out, the grin still prominent on his features. “
I bet you thought you could have the system fixed by the time someone did that, eh? Guess you should get Talbot to control his cronies better!

There was no response from the intercom system, and Forty-One just grinned some more, taking a drink of the coffee that was sitting next to his bagel before continuing. This time, however, he spoke to the audience in the hall.

You all guessed it, that system is offline. It’s been that way since a couple months back, but Red was the first one to call the bluff.

He paused for a minute, turning his head to face the three people that Red had been running at and adding, “
But you three knew already, did*’t you? You weren’t surprised at all. What else is your little group hiding from the rest of us?

Ever since he had started talking, the eyes of the three people he was addressing had narrowed. They did*’t like him saying anything, because every time he did it was something that they did*’* want to hear or did*’* want others to hear. They and he had been at odds for almost four months at this point, which was odd considering that they had been fine in the time before that.

Finally, Twenty-Eight spoke. His voice was actually quite smooth, the type of voice that one would expect a person leading people like this to have. Even in the current situation, his tone exuded confidence and control, as if he knew that he was in charge of the current situation. It was the same as always, and few people had ever seen him lose his composure.

And if we did? What difference does it make that we figured out something the rest of you couldn’t catch?
” he asked, his look around at the rest of the room asking them as much as Forty-One. “
Letting everyone know would disrupt the balance of the facility. We can** have everyone trying to start fights simply because they know the first line of defense is down.

The muttering that had begun when Forty-One had first asked subsided slightly, a few people accepting the answer as fair. Even if the group wasn’t exactly a positive influence on most of the facility, having everyone trying to pick fights wasn’t something that anyone wanted. The group might have known, but even they weren’t exempt from being affected by it.

Alison, who had been about to answer Dean when Red had made everyone realize the defense wasn’t there, finally managed to act through her surprise and speak. She had been here longer than anyone else in the room, and something like this was unprecedented. Although she hadn’t expected the project executives to tell them if something like that system went down, she had never expected it to actually happen.

I...I have no idea.
” was her response, and it sounded as though she was saying that in regards to pretty much everything that was happening right now.

Meanwhile, as though it had been waiting for Twenty-Eight and Forty-One to speak, the voice came back over the intercom. It did not have much to say this time, and it did not sound any different from before. The businesslike quality was still fully present in the tone, as was the lack of emotion.

Subject Twenty-Two, you have been told to cease your current offensive actions. If you insist upon continuing them, then move them to the Arena. It is against the procedures of this facility to allow subjects to commence destructive acts of violence in an area where injury may occur, and failure to go along with these policies that you agreed to when you signed the contract will result in forced removal from these premises.
*

This message was followed up by another, but the second message was in a voice that all of them knew fairly well. Michael Talbot sounded quite amused by the current situation, and the fact that he did*’t sound like he was reading a prearranged script designed to fit any situation similar to this made his words a sharp contrast to the previous speaker.

And just so we’re clear, Fifty-Five, you can** decline this should she decide to continue this. None of you can, actually. I saw what you did, and you know that doing something like that means you clearly instigated the fight. I’ll be very disappointed if you just started something you can** finish.

Rena

He thinks I'm crazy.
Rena thought. Jack's radiative judgment set her heart running.

His thinking wasn't wrong. Having come down from her emotional high, she was feeling the regret and embarrassment boiling in her chest. She could have argued to herself that it was just - a fitting extreme for a dilemma which had left her suddenly without her name or memories - but Jack, Joseph, Dr. Vellian and even the little girl were almost normal and Rena didn't want them to hate her. Jack himself had provided the first proof of what it was to be "something special".

"
All right.
" she agreed, but a sudden idea turned her around before she left. Clumsily, she hauled the IV pole upright, pushing it toward its resting place as if to make the room look normal again, barring this one frazzled, busted piece of hardware. Intensely self-conscious, she took after Joseph and Jack and the door sighed shut behind her.

She made a point of walking out of step with Jack, figuring the somewhat slouching teenager wouldn't appreciate it, and as much as she tried to distract her eyes with the scenery, there was little of note; the corridors were pretty sterile, partly in the way of a hospital but also something more severe like a jail or a bomb shelter. It discomforted her to think why this was so.

"
Oh, yeah, no, that's right. I'm Rena. Rena... Kruger.
" she said, eager to introduce herself indirectly to Jack.

"
Apparently, anyways...
" she added. Her voice weakened into a mumble.

"
I'm not really sure. I think I got here fine.
" she continued, offering an ignorant shrug. It kicked in that Joseph wasn't as familiar with her problem as Vellian.

"
It's just that, I was telling Dr. Vellian... I don't remember anything. About myself - about why I came here. It's like I woke up and forgot who I was.
" Rena explained.

While she guessed Joseph - Joe - was only trying to be casual, his characterising of all this as "supernatural" disturbed some vivid ideas in Rena's head. Ghosts, zombies and vampires were her idea of the supernatural, and while it was definitely too silly to consider, that thing that'd emerged from Jack made it worth a second guess. The guy himself didn't seem bothered by it, but she suspected that was just his personality. Human beings had a power for adapting to these kinds of revelations.

"
Sorry. Guess that doesn't answer your question.
" she said.

But Rena was eager to know what Joseph knew. He seemed entirely relaxed for a man who hinted at being so familiar with this alien stuff.

"
But, yeah -- I mean, I think so. I saw a bit... and Vellian only told me a little. She said, 'everyone here can do something special'. What does that mean? That little girl back in there, she just.. went up in flames. But she was fine. And then there was this thing, like a ghost...
" Rena's voice rose in urgency until she stopped herself and sighed.

"
I just don't understand anything. It's like... magic.
" she said.

Annie looked at the doctor with panic in her eyes as the doctor asks her a question. At first she didn't know how to answer that because there was a lot going on so, she needed to think for a minute or two. She finally was able to answer and said in a panic, weak voice," I I don't know. I need fresh air." She hopes she can get some fresh air. Her body was still shaking with fear and being so cold. She also felt very nauseous from being in a panic and using her power for the first time. She might throw up any second. -Dances-

Joe seemed more eager to get some food than either Jack or Rena, or at least outwardly so. Jack was starting to feel when the hologram was talking about when it mentioned the power’s drain on his energy. Not that one could easily tell given his generally neutral facial expression; although, his pace had quickened ever so slightly if anyone was paying attention to that. Just a subconscious change to help get to the food faster, and besides, it wasn’t like there was much to look at going down the hallway.

Joe also seemed to be fairly talkative, in comparison to Jack. Had not asked any questions, Jack may have been inclined to walk the whole way without saying a word, just nodding at anything Joe said. Which is really how he answered the question confirming his name, just nodded and gave a little “Mmhm.” It was that the talking bothered Jack, but he never really took the initiative when it came to conversations. In fact, there were times when he enjoyed being around more verbal people, so they could have their conversation and he could simply listen without having to put effort into keeping the discussion going.

Rena’s comment took Jack a little by surprise. He had heard her talking to the Doctor, but hadn’t heard anything she’d said, so this was the first he’d heard about her memory loss. Jack turned his head a little bit back toward Rena and commented,
“Well I guess that explains a lot.”

It was a fairly blunt statement, but that was kind of how Jack was. He tended towards blunt honesty and abundant sarcasm. He wasn’t so socially inept that he did*’t understand why people would be offended by this, but he often preferred to let the people around him sift themselves out until the easily offended ones were gone and the people who understood his sarcasm stayed rather than play some social mind game to try and keep everyone happy. In the past he’d even had a few friends who entertained themselves with some of the ridiculous s*** he said.

“Yeah, I kinda figured out the whole supernatural deal a few minutes ago,”
Jack said turning back to Joe without really waiting for a response from Rena.
“It kinda activated itself on something like self-defense instinct really and I did*’t have that much control really,”
he continued,
“The weird hologram person mentioned it probably took some energy out of me, so I guess that’s why I look tired.”

Level 2 Hallway

Man, the two of ya got the complete introduction to this place already.
” Joseph told them, shaking his head in a bit of astonishment. “
Apart from the ‘waking up to metal walls’ introduction that makes up the normal part of the tour, ya also got to see power manifestations and Rhamn(u)sia before you even left the med ward. That’s the hologram, in case you’re wondering. Some security program designed to monitor this place. Don’t know the details, but it seems like a peacekeeper, watchdog, backup doctor, and facility technician mashed together.

Yeah, the first manifestation tends to sap your energy.
” he told Jack. “
It’s a doozy from what I’ve heard, but it looks like ya got off pretty easy. Some of the stranger ones put people out for days. Had one girl that was out for a week. Subject Twenty, I think it was, although from what I hear that’s a very extreme case.

Anyways, I wouldn’t worry too much, about yourself or about all of the things that are going to be a little shocking for a while.
” he told them, although it looked like it was directed more at Rena than Jack. “
Ya might as well call it magic, because I don’t know the big sciency terms they would probably use in a press conference. And ya’ve got it now, both of ya. Probably best for someone who’s a scientist to explain any details, but I can tell ya that there’s something ya can do now that a normal human like me can**.

Let’s see*
* he said as he paused for a minute, looking like he was thinking,
