Cogito Ergo Sum

The dark-haired girl was adrift. Above sleep, and beneath a pinhole of light that pried open half-closed eyes. Vague sounds taunted her ears, too -- minced noises that begged her to understand them even as they fought with themselves. Fear was the first sense to warm this void; there was bliss in the solitude of a closed eye and a deaf ear, and more than only fading away, it was being stolen from her. If only something could be done. She was just a spectre, unmoored from her body.

And while fear beckoned her back into the apathy and quiet, a greater force seized her. It must have been the hand of God felt like -- a tremendous sensation of need, purpose even, that rushed her toward the light and imparted an intimidating wish: to use what little strength you will now be given, and know. No matter to which she fled, the clashing of those forces tore the void apart at once and the girl was hurtled into being, terrified and yet with reason. There was a wave of light.

The girl lunged at the world; immediately assailed by a sensation of drowning and oppressive blindness, she jolted upright, ravenously gasping for air and thrashing about for solid ground as soon as she discovered her arms. Aside her hip she found a ledge of painfully cool metal, and quickly feeling injured she yanked back her hand to nurse over her heart -- her chest thundered, and imagining the flow of her blood beset her with awareness of her entire body.

Overwhelmed, she reserved a few heartbeats to focus, and by the time her blood and breath wasn't pounding in her ears, her eyes had overcome the sheen of light that blinded her.

She coughed -- her lungs could only withstand so much, but it broke the haze between her mind and what was around her. Everything was white.

It was a hospital, she thought, or a laboratory or something in between. The room was made anonymous by its impeccable arrangement: there was not a single word for her to see. No signage or lettering upon the walls that suggested the purpose of where she found herself, nor art or image of similar purpose. Chrome instruments worked noiselessly on either side of her, manufacturing statistics and measurements at what seemed like an unhurried pace.

When at first glance it seemed that there was nothing waiting to shock her, the girl's body gave in to its first reason to slow down and she was flooded with fatigue. Dazed, she sank into her thin pillow, teetering on the edge of sleep were it not for the heavy light glaring at her from above. It was in shifting her head to spare herself from this that she at last saw through the curtain of brightness and the chrome machines to what flanked her: another bed, and another person.

There laid a young blonde girl, no older than ten, perhaps, dressed in a black jumpsuit and footwear who seemed only somewhat less conscious than herself. Alarmed, the dark-haired girl looked the opposite way: there was a young, brown-haired man who looked close to his twenties, dressed similarly and just as awake as the little girl.

The dark-haired girl struggled to sit up, eager to see any others, but the long white room seemed otherwise empty. Except...

She hurried herself upright, now acutely aware that she was dressed the same as the two on either side of her. The clothes didn't offend her, but seeing the person who wore them was discomforting; she was a young woman, yes -- obviously a few years senior to the girl next to her, but she couldn't put an age on her. She brushed her loose hair out of her face and shifted awkwardly. As soon as she'd looked herself over, she felt eyes that shared her interest.

She squinted.

A blonde woman stood at the end of the room, watching in speculative silence next to a screen upon the wall playing the image of a confident-looking man in a lab coat. Mindful blue eyes glinted through the woman's glasses, and meanwhile a grin was welded to the man's face. Both were dressed somewhat casually, if not for the slick white lab coats and severe-looking identification tags clipped to their chests. Of the two, the dark-haired girl more immediately stared at the man on the screen, but the image was silenced before she could get a careful look. Disappointment flickered briefly inside her.

Talbot.

The dark-haired girl nonetheless honed in on the woman's name tag: a doctor, Amanda Vellian. It was a hospital after all. The other two seemed to rouse.

The quiet world was coming to life fast, and it quickened her heart, but the doctor's question froze her.

They were only words. But cold panic rose from deep within the dark-haired girl's gut, and obvious anxiety coloured her face. She couldn't think of a time when anyone had asked her such a question.

Because who was she?

"
I...
" she said, tightly gripping her bedsheets. Her voice was faint.

"
I don't know.

The commotion from the girl in the bed beside him brought Jack further from his unconscious state as the drugs wore off. Slowly he opened his eye and glanced around the room without raising his head. It looked kind of like a hospital, but something was a little off about it. Maybe that was just the drugs though.

Gradually, the daze started to wear off and memories began coming back. He remember the man…Talbot was it? There was the boat and… that was about it. Next thing he knew he was here. Was the procedure all read over? He did*’t feel any different.

He started to sit up and then caught himself when he felt a rush of dizziness. Sat up too fast, Jack thought. A woman was standing across the room. “Hello there. The three of you feeling alright?”

Sure, I guess
,” Jack replied, “
I still feel all my toes
.”

Annie laying on a weird bed as she was waking up from the strange medicine that they gave her. Slowly she opened her eyes and glanced around the room without raising her head trying to figure out where she was. As she looked around she saw various medical monitoring devices were set up alongside and behind her bed and the other beds. She didn't know what they do at all. She became very frighten that made her body shake that made her blood pressure, pulse, having trouble breathing, and everything else to go up because she doesn't know where she was and having a panic attack.

Her memories started coming back slowly. The only thing she can remember at this moment was the man in the suit and nothing else. The memory did not help her to calm down from her panic attack.

She heard a woman who was standing across the room say, “Hello there. The three of you feeling alright?”

She didn't answer the woman's question because she was scared and didn't know how to answer the question.

Subject 51

Subject 51 was standing at the free throw line, on the basket ball court. He was holding a ball in his outstretched arms, and was staring at it. "You'll make it in... i'm a pro." He then lifted the ball over his head, and tried to mimic the professionals. He flicked his wrist and sent the ball flying towards the basket. However, due to his terrible aim, the ball nicked the bottom corner of the backboard and feel to the ground.

He whispered to himself "and the crowd goes wild..." seemingly disappointed in his performance. He quickly made his way back to his room. Keeping his head down, and not stopping to talk. ~No one saw me miss, they don't know.~ He thought turning a corner. No one showed him much interest, because he did not have any powers. He often wondered why they would keep him around; he was just wasting space.

Once reaching his room, he jumped onto the bed. "Yeah i made it in... from half court." He said as he laid down. A smile grew across his face "Even with powers you couldn't make it... maybe i can teach you how to shoot, but you would need to practice hard." He said pointing his finger up at the wall.

Just another day...

((Sure, I'll accept anyone that wants to be part of this regardless of skill level as long as they find the energy to go through the horrible adventure of bio writing.)) Done in by the dubious doings of destiny.

((Great, thanks! Yeah it actually took me a couple days to sit down and tackle it. I'm not even sure if I even did it right... but lets see.))

"You don't mind getting up this early, do you Paul?" Josie clung to the side of the pool, catching her breath. Every day started with a few laps. Staying in shape was important to her; she could smile when she looked in the mirror, and her body felt as energetic as her mind usually was. Paul, a security officer, met her here every weekday morning with two cups of coffee and a non-lethal tranquilizer pistol.

"Not at all, Ms. Winters." He was always brief. Josie had tried everything to see if he would drop his dutiful demeanor: gifts, card tricks, humor, seduction, tardiness, bullying. The farthest she ever got was getting him to call her 'Ms. Winters' instead of 'Subject 23'. Oh, and there was that one time he chuckled at that knock knock joke.

Of course, all of that was just to distract Josie from the reality of her situation. She was dangerous, perhaps deadly, due to her mutation and her inability to control it. She understood that, and Security Guard Paul definitely understood that.

She pulled herself out of the water and began walking towards Paul, who, though much more comfortable with Josie now, maintained guardlike posture. The water on her skin hastily evaporated, and she was dry before not 4 paces from the pool. "I see you've been practicing," Paul said, noticing her display of control. "You're glad I didn't irradiate the room," she replied. It was a self-deprecating reference to her mutation procedure.

"It's kinda bull ****, ya know? 'Electromagnetic Radiation' is for highschool science classes and the Sun. Yet, here I am reheating my coffee with the same power that could have given those geneticists cancer." She never found out what happened to the scientists in the room with her - she was afraid to ask, not that she'd get an answer. There was no shortness of luxury and kindness here, for a laboratory, but answers were sometimes shrouded.

She sipped from the coffee Paul had brought. Delicious. She raised the cup and gave him a nod, a silent appreciation for his efforts. "Well, it's been a pleasure sir. Shackle me and set me free, so you can get on with your day," Josie said. Sometimes it was difficult to tell when she was being sarcastic. She held out her left arm, palm up, revealing an IV catheter that was partially embedded in her skin several inches above the wrist.

"It's called a dosimeter, FYI," Paul had a little snark in his voice - perhaps Josie had been getting to him. She couldn't help but smile a little as he slid a metal bracelet over the port and locked it into place. This device was the long term solution, albeit one that made her uncomfortable. The bracelet measured high energy radiation levels and, if too high for a calculated amount of time, would inject a sedative to induce unconsciousness. It was only removed for tests and, because she requested it, swimming. The tranquilizer gun was their compromise.

They said their usual goodbye-see-you-tomorrows and went their separate ways. For Josie, that meant level 6. That damned computer's days are numbered.
