Cogito Ergo Sum

If the raven-haired girl didn't need all of her digits to tame her weapon, her fingers would be crossed -- right or not, she hoped her success was a certainty; the wounded control panel would surrender to a rain of sparks and smoke if she hit it only once more. Nobody stopped her. That was true even in the breathless instant before the IV pole would have met its mark, and yet she was stopped.

Overwhelming chill impaled her, and she stiffened. But more than shocked, she felt blind: a new shadow had been cast in front of her in between blinks, and yet not on the wall but in front of it. It was a figure, somewhat like a man, that hovered nose to nose with her and drew its arms up in jealous defence -- though perhaps it was fear, since the apparition having no face, it wasn't immediately scrutable.

Instinctively, she recoiled, and also expecting the shadow-figure to resist her, relented her grip in that instant. No force opposed her -- the IV pole passed through the shadowy figure like it were mist, fell short of the panel and sailed to the floor with a crash , pushing her precariously onto her heels. The shadow-figure was dispersed, except into a rush of cold -- a sort of unseen energy, bitter like a splash of arctic water and yet dry -- that struck her on the chest and sent her to the floor.

Her ambition fled into the ground along with her collected focus. Slaving to breathe like she'd escaped drowning -- the energetic shock stripped the air from her -- she kicked herself urgently away from the door. The shadow-figure was gone, and the door stood closed in front of her, unflinching. Her weapon, meanwhile had not even scratched the panel. A moment of despair mixed with her bewilderment; she wouldn't be leaving, and worse, she'd just dealt with something far more than she could understand right now.

She looked over her shoulder, wide-eyed, and from her spot on the floor observed that the previously healthy young man was now slumped against his bed like he was unconscious -- and that seemed to be the case.

The dark-haired girl looked away, down to the mirror floor between her legs. Strands of hair stuck to her face, and while the bright light saturated her features, it was obvious enough that the girl on the floor was in shock -- seeds of panic dotted her blue eyes.

The pace of her heart climbed down, just to ache with discomfort. That was her, whoever she was.

An impression of defeat briskly stilled her. She picked herself up, self-consciously brushing off her jumpsuit, and sulked over to the door, where she slid back down to the floor and drew her legs up, shielding herself with her arms.

The dark-haired girl took a deep breath and tucked that dark hair behind her ears, content with the hot exhale warming her face.

She just didn't know.

A slight smile came across Talbot’s lips when all three of those that he had called for asked questions, as if he was glad that they had seen the opportunity and taken it. As if to acknowledge them, he finally turned away from the screens, facing them with his arms crossed. Behind him, a new individual - her jumpsuit showing her to be subject twenty-two - had just barged into the dining area, causing many of the subjects to look up before shaking their heads and returning to their food. More followed, but she made a much larger impact than any of them.

In part. Confirming that they are dead is a secondary objective.
” he said, answering Miles first. “
If the monitoring status is correct, then all power was cut off immediately and has remained that way since the incident. They should not have been able to survive longer than two days. More importantly, there is something down there I need the status of.

He paused for a moment, eyes moving to one of the screens - although it was impossible to tell which one exactly - and then back again before he continued. “
There is a control room down on level ten, and I need to you make sure everything in it is still functioning properly. I’ll give you a map to it, and I need to you give me a report on the status.

As for who is going, there will be one more. However, he is only there to facilitate your incursion. The level doors at the bottom of level eight cannot be opened yet, and due to the protection that they provide there is only one way for you to enter. Rham****a, describe subject forty-three’s ability.

Although nobody else entered the room, another voice immediately began speaking. It would become clear quickly that the voice speaking was the same voice that usually announced things over the intercom.

Subject forty-three possesses an ability that has been logged as ‘mental projection’.
” the voice said, not stopping what it was saying even if someone decided to interrupt it. “
This mutation appears to work solely with the mind, having no impact of the physical capacity of the subject whatsoever. At will, subject forty-three can send his mind, as well as the minds of others, out of their bodies, forming an intangible image that replicates the form that they possessed when the ability is activated. While no physical interaction can be made with the world while this is active, it appears that anything on the individual’s person that does not require physical interaction will function in an identical manner to when they had a physical form. The connection may be terminated from any distance on any participant at any time by the subject, but re-establishing connection to the physical bodies of the others under the effect of the mutation requires them to make contact with their physical forms.

He is how you are going to investigate.
” Talbot said as soon as the voice had stopped speaking. “
There has been no executive order to unseal the doors to the lower levels, and until there is we cannot enter them physically. I will send for him to meet you at the doors, and he will project you through them. Due to the nature of his mutation, he will be accompanying you as well.

You are going to want to bring a light source of some kind. No power means no light, and they should work while you are in the projection.
” Alexei Juradis spoke up, although unlike Talbot he remained facing away from them. His voice sounded somewhat distant, as though he wasn’t paying full attention to the three of them.

If you have an instrument to measure vital signs that does not require physical contact, Doctor Martin, I would recommend bringing that as well.
” he continued. “
You may be able to tell that the subjects are dead simply by observing them, but if you want real confirmation then you will need an instrument of some kind. Your projections cannot be physically injured, so no weaponry will be necessary, although that does not mean you may not bring any if you feel so inclined.

He stopped talking for a minute, during which he stopped his working as well and reached under the desk, removing what looked like three small spheres from another machine underneath. Turning his chair away from the desk, he then stood up and crossed the room, offering one of them to each person.

These are holo-maps.
” he explained, tapping a button on the side to demonstrate. A display appeared above, showing a 3-Dimensional layout of what was labeled as the lower two levels of the facility.

*
Once you are there, it will register your position and you can find your way accordingly.
” he said, returning to his desk once they each had one. “
The location of the control room is marked in red.

You may take as much time as you wish to investigate the levels.
” Talbot told them. “
I will leave it up to you how thorough you want to be. Just remember that I need to know the status of the instrumentation in the control room. Make sure you document everything that is on a display in there before you come back up.

That was said with a finality that indicated he was done telling them what he was going to, and he turned back around to look at the monitors again once he was done.

Although the situation had turned to chaos, at least for a moment, Doctor Vellian did*’t panic. She had experience dealing with situations like this before, although it had always been with a single subject rather than three at once. That was something she had to bring up with the executives again, the fact that solo awakenings were better overall. Someone - and she had a good idea who - had thought it would be a good test to see how multiple wake-ups would go under the supervision of a single doctor, and she had been the one selected.

Surprisingly, the one who decided to show a mutation effect first was the young man that had been the only one in a somewhat calm mental state up until now. What he could do looked similar to what she had seen from Subject Forty-Three, but the projection seemed to actually be able to interact with the world around it as well. That was an interesting note, and one that she was going to make sure to log, but it wasn’t very high on the scale of importance right now.

Rham****a, explain to Annie about the mutation manifestation. Use a doctor avatar. Also, give me a full physical diagnosis of subject seventy-six and report any damage to his body or mind.
she said, although she did not appear to be speaking to anyone in the room.

Almost immediately, a hologram appeared on the lower bedpost of Annie’s bed. It looked like a doctor, and was dressed in the same labcoat that she was, but had jet black hair and pale skin. The facial expression was a kind one, though, so the somewhat red eyes that it possessed were much less concerning. The voice it spoke with was informative, but not harsh, and sounded like it was designed to set people at ease.

The mutation manifestation process usually takes multiple days. There is nothing abnormal about it making itself known immediately, nor is it unknown for it to not appear for months. Don’t worry. You are in no danger. If it decides to manifest in here, it will be contained, and a subject can never be harmed by their own mutation.
” it told her.

A similar hologram also appeared on the foot of Jack’s bed. For a moment, it said nothing, and one could assume that it was running the tests that it had been asked to. However, it did speak once, asking only, “
Are you all right?

Meanwhile, Doctor Vellian made her way carefully over to where Rena was now sitting. She had abandoned her assault on the panel by this point, an effort that had been fruitless from the start due to the metal cover that had immediately come down to protect the delicate instrumentation of the panel. While she no longer looked as though she wished to put up a fight, Vellian was still a bit cautious. The panic and anger had come from seemingly nowhere, and it wasn’t clear what exactly had set it off or if it would show up again.

Going down on one knee next to the girl, not too close as to seem crowding but close enough that it did not look like she was afraid, the Doctor asked gently, “
Rena, what’s wrong?

Although trying to talk when she had been running before had produced nothing, the girl seemed somewhat calmer now, and the Doctor hoped that it meant she could now be spoken to. She realized that, in retrospect, it might have helped if she had focused attention on her to begin with - seeing as how people who feel ignored in a strange place like this might be unable to just live with it - but that wasn’t something she could do anything about now. There was too much going on with these three, and Vellian was definitely going to mention that this shouldn’t be attempted again.

Dining Area

The reaction when Red entered the hall - which could really be called a cafeteria - was pretty much what one would expect. Nearly everyone’s heads shot up, trying to see who was making such a ruckus, but then most of them returned to whatever they had been doing before. A few stayed for a moment longer, those ones being the same people that always stared for a minute when a cute girl entered whatever room they were in.

When she made her presence even more known with the spoken word, several people shook their heads and one declared, “Go yell at someone else, muscles!” but made sure to keep it so she couldn’t tell who they were.

The hall itself was rectangular in shape, about one hundred feet on the wall the main entrance was on and one hundred and seventy-five feet on the side. It was set up with the food at the far end from the main entrance - something that many subjects grumbled about - and four rows of tables aligned parallel to each other and perpendicular to the entrance that formed a single giant table stretching down the entire hall. There were two other doors as well that entered from about halfway down the sides, and there was an exit into the kitchen behind where the food was put out. The tables were set up with benches along the entirety of each side.

The current number of subjects wasn’t able to even fill a single row of tables when all of them were there, and so the place always looked somewhat empty. It was clear that it had been built with a much greater number of people in mind, and even with the guards that ate there - as there was no dining area in their own section of the facility - it did*’t even come close to filling the room.

Subjects eating there were somewhat spread out, and separated into pretty clear groups. At the center of the table on the left side of the room was the largest group, made up of the subjects that liked to think they were the big shots among the subject population. While the guards and security made it impossible for them to actually make life really hard for the others, they always liked to act as though they were a step above everyone else, and with the subject rebellion they had lost some of their more powerful opposers.

Their leader was subject Twenty-Eight, a thirty year old man that had received electrokinesis as his mutation. He sat in the middle of the group, with subject Forty-Four, a twenty year old female metal manipulator, on the right side and Fifty-Five, a sixteen year old male telekinetic, on the left. The only one of the “group executives” missing was Forty-Six, a twenty-two year old male air manipulator. The rest of the group’s members were followers of those four, doing pretty much whatever the executives wanted. It was rumored among the other subjects that the group hadn’t been disbanded or watched more closely because they had some arrangement with the project executives.

The largest group was made up of eleven people, although there were more of them that were not here. All of the other groups were made up of three or four people at max, and they were spread out among the tables, away from the big one. Big groups tended not to be formed, most subjects ending up with a few people they were good friends with and just the knowledge of who everyone else was. The facility was big enough that constant contact with others was not a necessity. There were a few couples as well, as relationships were not discouraged in the slightest, and most groups were all formed of people with a similar age range.

There were only two people sitting alone. One was a young woman, about twenty years old and with a jumpsuit that indicated she was subject Thirteen. It was the first time she had eaten in the dining hall since the rebellion incident, which was not surprising since her sister, subject Twelve, had been one of the ones lost, as well as the two other people, subjects Twenty and Twenty-Six, that she had been good friends with. Considering that she was not on the best of terms with the largest subject group, it had made sense that she had come in only to take her food and leave. Her mutation was unknown to everyone, as she never seemed to use it and refused to tell anyone what it was. That alone irked the group, as it was their modus operandi to taunt anyone that had been here for a while that did*’t have a manifested ability.

The other was a man that was about thirty-two years old that could be identified as subject Forty-One. His reason for being alone wasn’t nearly as melodramatic, and stemmed from his mutation more than anything else. He had the ability to transfer his consciousness into machines and control them, something that he liked to say was not very useful here. He was allowed to use cameras to watch everyone, and interact with the video games to play them from within - an ability which gave him undisputed control over all of the highscores - but wasn’t able to access many other systems. He claimed that there was something big blocking him, but a lot of subjects were convinced that he simply wasn’t very good with his power. In any event, he almost always ate alone because he was too busy watching everything else through a lens that wasn’t his eyes to pay attention to talking.

Subject Thirteen was sitting in the corner, as far away from the big group as she could get, while Forty-One was almost directly in the center of the room.
