"What do you mean, your downfall?" Zaros demanded.
Hasan bowed his head. "After I left Kharyll, I traveled south past the land of the Dorgeshuun and into Al-Kharid. There I lived for seven years, gaining power in a small village. They greatly valued my skill as a silversmith, and they thought I was a wise and intuitive leader. I met Calina, the daughter of a rich merchant, and I married her. I had the life that I had always dreamed of. However, I could never escape the thought of Raldeir.
"He just always seemed to be a step behind me, and so when we started to get word that the Empire's forces were entering our lands, I just knew that it was Raldeir searching for me. So I sought out Ihrba*ka, who was rumored to be living in the area."
"In Al-Kharid?" asked Zaros. "Why wasn't he in the southern part of the desert?"
"Because I was in the area. He usually appears only where he is needed, and there were events that he needed to manipulate. When I talked to him, he warned me that Raldeir wanted me dead, and he told me what to do to save my unborn child...you. He instructed me to enter a gateway to Freneskae--there was one buried in a cave deep underground in the southern reaches of Al-Kharid--and find the one called Thaduka."
"Thaduka! You met Thaduka?"
"Yes. He was in exile at the foot of Seethrim, the Ice Mountain, and he was very sad. When I begged for his help, he agreed to aid your survival. He infused his magic into your blood."
Zaros felt his stomach plummet. "Then...my magic is from Thaduka?"
"Yes, he gave it to you as a means of protecting yourself. It seems that it has worked out. Thaduka has been guarding you since you were born."
Zaros looked down at his arms. The very blood that poured through his veins was tainted by the power of a Mahjarrat Lord. He felt a shudder go through his bones. How could such a thing be so? The wondrous force that he had used to fight so many of the Mahjarrat*it was actually one of their own.

Zaros continued walking alongside his father. The mountains on either side of the canyon started to end, opening up into a huge gray plain that seemed to stretch forever. "Where are we?" Zaros asked.
"The unknown lands of the Xinadi," Hasan replied. "Strange tales emerge from those lands."
Try as he might, Zaros could not stop thinking about his magic. "Why did Thaduka help you?" he asked. "You were a human!"
Hasan frowned. "I had heard the stories, and so I thought at first that it was guilt that he felt for having his own brother sent into exile. However, after I died, I learned the truth. He had received a visit shortly before I arrived."
"Who was it?"
"I have already spoken of him. It was Ihrba*ka; apparently he was playing both sides. He instructed Thaduka to help me when I arrived."
"So Ihrba*ka helped you! Why are you so distrusting of him?"
"He gave me two other pieces of information. The first I do not understand. He said that my son should make the brothers reunite."
"Tsugon and Thaduka?" Zaros thought. "Possibly, but I need to find Tsugon before I can reunite them."
"I'm not sure," Hasan replied. "I have thought of all this for decades, and I am no closer to an answer."
Zaros shook his head. "The second piece of information?"
"He told me to take my family and caravan and move south to Khaseph."
The silence that followed seemed to stretch on for eternity. Zaros stood motionless as he processed the words that his father had said. The scene of Sarraphar's attack and the brutal murder of his parents played over and over in his mind. Ihrba*ka himself had even showed it to him! And he had been so comforting...so comforting.
"That snake!" Zaros barked, rage pumping through his veins. He felt his blood boiling, the magic seemingly burning through his skin. "I'll kill him!"
Zaros began to drift away from his consciousness, as though the situation had turned into a blur. He had lost control of himself.
"Stop," Hasan said.
