The two black-cloaked men walked into the abandoned structure where Drakan and Malak waited in a small antechamber just inside the ruined doorframe. "Master," said Drakan with a bow. Dessous's face was visible under his hood, but the other man's face was completely obscured.
"Just checking your progress," the stranger said curtly.
"We have proceeded according to schedule," Malak replied. "Assuming Dessous finished off his objective, of course."
The master chuckled. "I know that your spies are more active than that. You are fully aware that Dessous followed through. Cormac is dead. If that wasn't true, Dessous would not be welcome back here, I daresay."
Drakan gave a grim smile. "If that is true, then yes, we are proceeding as planned."
"Yes," responded the Master, looking around the chamber. "Carralangar is mine, but that is only one of Zaros's cities. Seven more remain, the most difficult of which is Senntisten."
"We can conquer Kharyll the moment you ask, Master," said Drakan. "And we have several men making strides in the conquering of Dareeyak and Annakarl."
"Change of plans. I've already sent several of Zaros's own men toward Lassar. It has to be the next to fall."
"Lassar?" asked Drakan. "What difference can it possibly make?"
"All the difference in the world."
"But how? Zayd is one of Zaros's best friends. Zaros is bound to have guards stationed around all the leaders now that Cormac is dead, and Zayd will probably have more!"
The man smiled under the hood. "You're forgetting, Zaros has a lot of soldiers that have already sold out to my cause."
"Then, your men are going to Zayd on Zaros's orders?"
"Ironic, isn't it?" The man turned for the doorway. "Dessous and I need to get back to Senntisten before our absence arouses suspicion. I just wanted you to know not to make any moves for Lassar. I will signal when I want you to get Dareeyak and Annakarl. Best of luck."
The man and Dessous left the swamp as fast as they had come.
