Zaros waved both arms upward, and black helmets appeared on the heads of his two comrades. The helmets were composed of a layer of ice on the inside to nullify the creature's mental attack and another layer of darkness on the outside to defend against the fire attack. For good measure, he reinforced his own helmet in the same way.
"Azzanadra!" he yelled, keeping his eyes on the disintegrating shadow veil. "We need to attack this thing!"
"How?" the advisor snapped back. "He controls fire with his mind. We would never get close enough!"
"We have to try," Zaros replied.
Sliske nodded. "I'll give it a shot," he said. Then, he crouched to the ground, placing his palm to the gray earth. Two shadows emerged from his fingers, moving silently across the ground. The passed the shadow veil, which had almost fully vanished by this time. Large holes had appeared on it, so Zaros could see what was happening on the other side.
The creature noticed the serpentine shadows as they approached, almost as if he had anticipated Sliske's attack. It raised its hand, and two spots on the ground suddenly exploded into flame. Then, from the smoke of this onslaught, the serpents that Sliske had sent into the ground sprang up to attack. They were both made of black fire, their eyes glaring red and flaming fangs sharp. Zaros couldn't tell if the creature was surprised or not, due to its lack of facial expressions, but the timing of the attack had been good. Sliske had given the creature barely any time to react.
However, the creature was well prepared. It raised both arms, holding its open palms toward the two serpents. Then, using its incredible telepathy, two invisible streams of repulsion blasted out of its palms. The beams of pressure hit Sliske's attack head on, causing the black flames that made up the snakes to disperse. The creature was still unharmed.
"No," moaned Zaros. But Sliske began to run in a curving path around the monster. He wasn't done yet.

Sliske swung his arm, releasing another flaming serpent at the creature. The figure repelled it just as easily as it had the others; however, Sliske's arc was getting him closer and closer to the beast. Finally, Sliske came to a stop, slapping the ground with both hands. Zaros saw two more serpents emerge underground. They circled and started to come in on the enemy from either side.
Sliske then charged forward to attack from the front. The monster held out its hand and let out another current of force directly at Sliske. Sliske jumped over the stream, hanging in the air as he soared over the figure. The enemy started to make another attack, but it sensed Sliske's hidden assault. The two serpents burst from the ground on either side of it, their fangs bared and ready to strike. The creature had barely any time to swing its arms into place, but it managed to repel both of these serpents simultaneously.
Sliske smiled. "Got you!" he yelled from overhead, sending one more serpent down on the top of the monster's skull, the concentric rings of its crown acting like a target for Sliske.
The monster, with unearthly speed, swung both arms upward and blocked the serpent with only inches to spare. The creature turned its head, but Sliske's distraction had worked. The creature's arms both uselessly up in the air, it was helpless to Sliske from the back. Sliske landed, pulling out his scimitar and moving in to strike. He brought the blade forward just as the creature made one final desperate lunge to escape. Sliske drove his blade through the monster's torso, making a large but nonfatal wound.
Sliske's momentary disabling of the monster's hands had long since worn off. The Mahjarrat tried to leap away from the monster, but it had already swung its right arm down to the ground in a deadly curve. The force it commanded came down onto Sliske, crushing him into the ground at the monster's feet.

"Sliske!" called Zaros as he came running into the fray to defend his vassal.
The monster craned its head to see Zaros, and then it raised its hand towards the Emperor. Zaros summoned a new shadow veil in front of him, but the monster's attack tore through it with ease. The brunt of the onslaught hit Zaros's head and chest at full force, hurling him away. Zaros fell limply to the ground, his entire body aching from the impact. His helmet had shattered, leaving his head open to attack.
But the mental attack did not come. Zaros couldn't understand why he was not being hit by the same thing that had affected Azzanadra and Sliske. Zaros tried to rise, but he was weakened. Suddenly, he heard a rumble in the distance. A storm was approaching.
The creature did not seem to notice. It turned its head back to Sliske, ready to demolish him. However, it was Sliske that took the next round. Before the monster had time to react, Sliske spat in its face.
The venom he had spit burned the enemy's face on impact. A terrible scream pierced all their minds as the creature yelled telepathically in agony. It finally stopped, the venom used up. However, not until half of the monster's face was blackened, burned nearly to the skull.
It looked down on Sliske, sending another burst of force at him. The attack squished Sliske against the rocky ground. Then, it raised Sliske up, leaving him hovering in front of it. The creature then waved his arm up, telekinetically removing Sliske's protective helmet.
Instantly, Sliske roared in pain. The creature was burning his brain again. It waved its hand again, and Sliske himself was hurled away. Even after he hit the ground, he still flailed about in his horrible agony.
Zaros slowly rose to his feet. "I have to save him," he muttered as he began to move into the arena to get to Sliske. However, Azzanadra stopped him.
"One moment, my Lord," he said, his hands shining with bright energy. "This will be over very soon."
