Zayd spun away from the crystal, sighing. The world had gone crazy, and they had no control. Zaros had to be at the end of his rope.
"Lord Zayd," ventured a voice from the doorway. Zayd looked up, and he saw Torin standing there.
"Yes, Torin, come in," Zayd replied, a smile on his face. That was how he functioned. No matter what was on his mind, he always had a positive face to show his staff.
Torin, though not fooled at all by Zayd's act, entered the room holding a small leather pouch. "This came directly from Emperor Zaros," he said.
Zayd took the pouch and looked within. He pulled out a small scrap of parchment that had a short message printed on it. It read simply, "Guard this," written in Zaros's handwriting.
Zayd dug deeper into the bag, and then he felt a small pebble. He pulled it out of the pouch, and saw that it was a brilliant crystal about the size of a marble. "What is that?" asked Torin.
But Zayd just kept looking at it. He remembered it all too well. Just six years earlier, he had put it in place in the hilt of Zaros's blade at the Emperor's coronation. "It's one of the gems from Zaros's sword," he responded. "I wonder why he gave it to me?"
Torin shook his head. "I don't know, but there's something else I need to tell you."
"Go on."
"Well, we haven't been able to locate the culprit for the attempt on your life. We've decided that it's best for you to move into a windowless room in the tower and have Kamil stand guard."
Zayd frowned. "That's the best option? To hide?"
Torin nodded gravely. "At the moment, yes, but we have word that Zaros is dispatching someone directly from Senntisten to hunt down the Sons. We'll see if whoever it is has any luck."
"I pray so."
"You and everyone else."
Zayd sighed and got up. Kamil was waiting outside in the hallway for him. "This way, Lord," Kamil beckoned, and the guardian led Zayd up the staircases to his new room.
