Matt hesitated, not sure how to react to Rhen's response. ~I can't say that was the answer I was looking for. I hope I do not regret this.~ He grasped Rhens' hand firmly and shook it. "We have a deal then. I must ask though: how exactly are the worlds broken? I agree they are not perfect, but I would not say that they are broken. Either way, I guess we will begin tonight, after we leave this hellish place. I'll try and think of things to ask you in the meantime."

Rhen noted the hesitation from Matt and he knew why. Rhen didn't realize it at first but what he had said earlier made him sound either crazy or malevolent.

''I....I got a bit ahead of myself. All of these emotions bottled up inside for so long are coming to the surface. The worlds are not perfect that much is true I agree. I have let my emotions blind me to many things. Perhaps I am the one who is broken and needs to be repaired, who knows.'' siad Rhen as he withdrew from the handshake. ''It feels good to get all of that off my chest. It feels like a load has been taken from me.''

Matt patted Rhen on his shoulder. "Don't worry about it. It sounds like you needed to say that. Go ahead and keep talking if you want to. It sounds like it is doing you some good. But while you are doing that, also tell me a bit about what makes you worthy of the respect you crave. You are always attacking yourself. If I went by just what you were saying, i'd get the impression that you were some half-insane weakling with no real talent to speak of. Now I know that isn't true. So tell me, what makes you worthy of respect Rhen?" Matt asked.

~Rhen needs to learn to view himself in a positive light. I'm suprised he still gets up in the morning, considering the way he views himself.~

''To put it simply Matt.....I am not just another cog in the machine as some say. Although I wish to do more than be a thinker I have a great intellect that I wish to share with others. I wager that if I applied myself more so I could discover an infinite amount of solutions to many of the problems in the worlds. But no one has been willing to give me the chance though. Especially on Nueva....most cities I have traveled to in my own travels treat me kindly to begin with but as soon as we sit down to talk they look at me in a different light, almost in disgust. Just because of what I am and how I look should not matter it should be the knowledge I have to offer that should matter. But alas people themselves are blinded by their own opinions or what they are told to believe. Perhaps some of their way of thinking has rubbed off on me which is why I view myself the way I do.'' said Rhen, his answer not exactly straight forward but deep.

"Well, to put it bluntly: We Neuvians don't like that which is not like us." Matt replied. "We are raised to distrust anything that is different then ourselves. I think a lot of it comes from our history. Humans are dominant in Neuva, but this only happened within the last few centuries. Before then, we were cattle to some and servants to others. With that sort of history... well, it's hard to blame us for not liking other beings, at least to some extent. When I was being educated, we were told that you couldn't trust 'lesser creatures and traitors to our kind' or we would be cattle again. That sort of thought isn't limited to a few countries. Pretty much every society thinks that way, at least to an extent."

''Despite what the past has been the past is not the present nor is it the future. It is time to put hatred for other beings aside. For if they seek to either wipe all other beings from Nueva or to control them, that makes them no better than the ancestors that of the beings that enslaved humans. Is that how they want to see themselves? do they want to be remembered by the other races as cruel overlords? If that is the case then the cycle will repeat anew for generations. It would create endless war and destroy Nueva as both sides consume resources for themselves to fight back. In the process of fighting those they hate....they shall consume that which they fight for. If he wanted to, Nhil could sit back and let the worlds destroy themselves with their endless slaughter, he need do nothing nor expend energy to achieve his goals.'' said Rhen.

''Those who hold power should use it wisely and with great thought. For if they are not careful that power could destroy them and all they hold dear. That is a lesson I have learned the hard way when I was banished.....It is a real possibility. The factors are there there only needs to be instigation to set the chain of events in motion that will begin an endless cycle of death until all living life is wiped clean from the worlds.''

<That sounds like the beginnings of a plan, but I’m not entirely certain if we can assume people will listen to the logic that the gigantic dragon that hasn’t done anything is going to continue not doing anything. That sort of thing… well, I think it’d be easier for others to use as a reason to worsen matters than to unite against Nrilgroth. In the wrong hands, proof of the existence of a mountain-sized dragon could easily be the flashpoint of an all-out extermination. You’d have to be extremely careful with who you trust****;

Forlirn paused mid-step for a brief moment, then shook his argentine head and resumed with a quickened pace. “It means we’re not moving fast enough. The Abyss has a semi-sentient nature… and most creatures from its depths share likenesses as the mind of a hive. Something lies ahead of us; I can feel its aura as if we’re dredging through the morass of a quagmire. Rhen, your eyes are sharp; keep them focused on the shadows. If they start rippling like a puddle disturbed, we need to run. They know fresh prey stalks the corridors.”

Shadows flitted to and fro, casting an array of dancing shadows across the cavern wall with the writhing hunger of the oily, twisting flames seeking freedom from their sustaining torches. The shadows grew and darkened in this most sacred of sanctums, foreshadowing the entry of a procession of several dragons, bearing a whimpering bundle of scales. A lone shape sat crouched before a rusty slab of an altar, an intricate array of bound bones dangling from the dragon’s horns, swaying over his painted scales with each turn and inclination of his head. A solemn nod greeted the procession, granting permission to place the dying child on the bloodied slab before slipping off into bowels of the earth from whence they came. Silently, the dragon placed a claw over the hatchling, his scales dampening with the blood oozing from the holes riddling the hatchling’s hide.
“Be still, my child… The pain shall soon cease and the earth shall protect you in her caress…” With a single, swift motion, the dragon slit a claw through the hatchling’s throat, watching the little body still as blood poured across the crude altar. “Terra! Feel our blood seep through your flesh! Hear our screams as they rend our bodies and across your hide! Terra, remember your children and wake from your slumber! Clean the stain of the ignorant and free us from their yoke! Rend the earth asunder and grind them to dust in your great maw!”

“Residents are advised to power down and disconnect all electronic devices for the duration of the night in accordance with the passing of the Electrostatic Comet. The proximity of the comet as it passes out planet is known disrupt and even destroy electronic devices when active. Although researchers have yet to suggest any plausible explanation for this phenomenon, they have assured us there will be no difference since the last pass of the comet-”
The elvish newscaster’s voice abruptly cut off as the wizard flicked off the television. She had always liked that channel for keeping up with Neuvian news, what with the neutrality it presented subject material that seemed all too rare among the non-magical telepathic network the Neuvians referred to as “television.” Fascinating… though now was hardly a time to contemplate on Neuvian technology. Rather, the TV box confirmed her suspicion: Neuva was undergoing the same event as Elune, and even though she could sense no magical energy resonating from this “comet,” she still suspected it and the arcane Sparkstar of Elune were one and the same. After all, this comet caused anomalies on Neuva that were probably similar to the magestorms that occurred whenever the Sparkstar shone brightly in the sky. What it meant, however… well, perhaps returning to her lab on Elune might help her figure that out…

A dull thud echoed through the desolate mountains, the Elunian counterpart of the ranges of the Soulbound. Perhaps a bit less desolate, though; after all, the necromantic cults which took refuge within the stony peaks tended to twist the land to their liking. Not that such trivialities mattered; with one final thud, the figure wreathed in black drove the necromancers’ crystal into the pedestal, completing the circle. Centuries of labor had gone into carving and scoring the great circle countless miles through the mountains, meticulously exacted to impossibly precise detail. The necromancers proved useful in the endeavor; a simple pact in exchange for power left them to create the central crystal with their newfound might, leaving the figure free to carry out the more important task of creating the summoning circle. Now* now the circle was complete, and now the crystalline catalyst stood ready to complete the spell. All that remained was to wait for the oncoming surge of energy, Thlorian’s yellow gaze fixed on the brightening comet in the darkening sky.

((To use Nar's words, I've found a brief respite.))
