Shadows flitted to and fro, casting an array of dancing shadows across the cavern wall with the writhing hunger of the oily, twisting flames seeking freedom from their sustaining torches. The shadows grew and darkened in this most sacred of sanctums, foreshadowing the entry of a procession of several dragons, bearing a whimpering bundle of scales. A lone shape sat crouched before a rusty slab of an altar, an intricate array of bound bones dangling from the dragon’s horns, swaying over his painted scales with each turn and inclination of his head. A solemn nod greeted the procession, granting permission to place the dying child on the bloodied slab before slipping off into bowels of the earth from whence they came. Silently, the dragon placed a claw over the hatchling, his scales dampening with the blood oozing from the holes riddling the hatchling’s hide.
“Be still, my child… The pain shall soon cease and the earth shall protect you in her caress…” With a single, swift motion, the dragon slit a claw through the hatchling’s throat, watching the little body still as blood poured across the crude altar. “Terra! Feel our blood seep through your flesh! Hear our screams as they rend our bodies and across your hide! Terra, remember your children and wake from your slumber! Clean the stain of the ignorant and free us from their yoke! Rend the earth asunder and grind them to dust in your great maw!”
