Hathka nodded intently as Auria rattled off her piloting experience. When she started describing her own small craft, the Kanta's forehead wrinkled in confusion.

"...Experimental military tech?"
she wondered aloud. Still, she waved the offer of the schematics aside.
"You can send that to the captain if she wishes, but it'd mean nothing to me."
Hathka paused for a moment, then nodded.

She leaned in, almost conspiratorially, and said,
"'Course, Captain gets final say. But I think that - AI companion notwithstanding - we could use a person like you. Assuming, that is..."
Hathka paused for a moment, dropping her voice and taking on a very serious tone.
"There's no one looking for that mech of yours, is there? We'd wanna know about that up front."

As Rylan passed by her, Auria paused for a moment, the uncomfortable feeling of his constant gaze making her feel just a little uncomfortable. He did not look angry, and that just made it worse. A bad relationship was easy enough to avoid, but someone that couldn’t help themselves…well, she knew what that felt like. Her own injury had been lesser in scope, but the involuntary fear had been problematic for many years.

It wasn’t until she couldn’t feel the gaze anymore that she went back to the conversation, although Rhamnusia was already commenting in a rather irritated voice,
Oh sure, I’m the problem. They ever take a look at how badly the organic races fuck everything up?
to Hathka’s comment. Auria would have shaken her head, but without an auditory cue to make others recognize she it was towards Rhamnusia she had to settle for,
Don’t worry, it doesn’t look like most of them actually dislike AI, and we can figure out how to deal with that one later.

The last question, though, was something she hadn’t even thought about since she was so used to not worrying. Thankfully, that was easy enough to pass on, and she quickly replied, “
No, there’s nobody. I was part of the development project, and the facility was destroyed in a Ghiak Feith attack. As far as they’re concerned, everything is destroyed and everyone is dead. Search and recovery have declared the project a complete loss.

Lorne jolted forward, swiping up her pail of kidneys before Ghivar could devour them. Chilly water sloshed about as she clumsily regained herself. She was fortunate for the diversion, which had enough of an urgency to snap her out of her paranoia – at least for now.

“Bad!” she chastised the Kathiss, waving her spoon sassily. “These are mine, fair and square!” she declared with a wink, showing just the tip of her tongue. Knowing that a new pair of shoes might be the only worthwhile thing she got out of this excursion, Lorne could hardly afford to allow her crewmate to eat her spoils.

Jaeden nodded.
"Of course,"
she answered quietly, lowering her arms to let him slide free. She watched him walk away, her brow furrowing for a moment before she exhaled sharply, turning her attention back to her crewmates.

She wandered over to them, her hands loosely resting on her hips, her icy blue eyes fixated on Auria. She came to a stop in front of the other woman, peering up at her thoughtfully. For a few moments, she stayed silent, mulling over the pros and cons of having this woman in the same area as a young man who hated AIs.

"...You'll have to forgive Rylan. He has a bad past with AIs,"
she stated flatly, folding her arms as she moved into a nonchalant and relaxed pose, shifting her weight to her left hip.
"I assume you can keep that one under control, aye?

The Kanta visibly relaxed upon hearing that the Federation wouldn't be on their asses for taking on Auria. Well, not immediately anyway. Though she'd escaped their misguided cover-ups, Hathka had seen too many good people get arrested for petty reasons in order to tear apart the Autumn Star.

Still, Rylan headed off toward the place where the Star was docked. Jaeden seemed to take back over for Auria's onboarding interview. Hathka stepped back, a symbolic passing-over of those responsibilities. This gave her a better view of... Whatever Ghivar was doing. He was... Nuzzling a bucket? Lorne quickly snatched it away from him and something sloshed around inside.

The Kanta frowned. Hopefully, the two of them could sort out whatever was happening over there. Hathka caught the captain's eye for a moment and nodded toward the dock for the ship. She figured it was about time for her to head back to check everything over before takeoff. Hathka took off at what she considered a leisurely pace, though most people around her seemed confused at her speed.

I understand. It wasn’t our intention to cause pain; we only felt it needed to be done now rather than causing such a problem later.
” Auria replied to Jaeden as she came back and took the conversation over again. It was true, and she tried to make it clear that she wasn’t saying what she was just to brush it off. Keeping Rhamnusia a secret would have been simple enough, but it would have been unfair to keep her tucked away when Auria knew the AI liked to be around people more than she did.

What was said next, though, was…a bit of an issue. The anger from Rhamnusia was something she could feel, and before she did anything further she made sure to say,
Don’t, Nemesis. I’ll say something, you don’t need to.
It didn’t exactly make the anger go away, but it did stop her from speaking. Instead, she just said,
Fine.
and didn’t do anything further.

She can keep herself under control.
” were Auria’s first words to Jaeden, and it was clear from the tone of her voice that she wasn’t happy with the way the inquiry had been phrased. “
I understand it may be different than what you’re used to, but I need to ask that you treat her like a person. She is not a thing, nor does she belong to me. She is an individual, same as anyone else. If you have a request for her, it is to her that it should be directed, not me.

It might be a bit strange to anyone listening, but the small speech she had just gone through had brought more emotion into her words than anything she had said so far. Whether it was something they agreed with or not, it was clear enough that this was something she felt strongly about.

Jaeden was silent for a moment, her expression hard to read. Was she contemplative? Was she pissed? Was she nonchalant? Any of these was possible. Her hands remained resting upon her hips, before she snorted quietly.

"You're not carrying much. Rhamnusia showed up when you introduced her. An AI needs a core, that much I do know. So since I don't see it anywhere and you're looking to get on my ship, I'm assuming it's on you,"
she answered at last, her voice sharp and no-nonsense.
"She may be her own mind, but she doesn't stop being your responsibility. You don't get to worm out of that just because she's an individual."

She straightens up, raising an eyebrow. Since she could not actually see Rhamnusia, she could only assume she was listening.
"Y'hear that, Rhamnusia? You're welcome on my ship - but if you endanger the crew, your friend gets spaced. Be up front with me if you need maintenance. She cares about you - but I have an entire crew to look out for."

The Captain glanced around briefly, before nodding.
"Alright, grab whatever things you have and go grab a bunk on the Autumn Star. The rest of you - we'll have a new mission soon, so you'd better get yourselves ready. And Ghivar?"
She paused and stared over at Ghivar.
"...Don't eat that. You don't know where it's been."

After Ghivar ‘s tongue tasted blood, his teeth barred and--nothing? Eyes opened, ears flicking, he looked at the ground, then side to side--still nothing? He soon noticed an evil spoon, Lorne’s tongue, and her wink, and Hathka over yonder with similar confusion.

Ghivar’s face sort of smooshed in. He looked at the ground again, where the pale had once been, sniffing the air and scanning this formerly wonderful spot. He stood straight, frowning, whiskers bent.

The captain recommended Ghivar not to eat things he didn’t know about. He sort of frowned disappointedly. He looked at the ground again, one last time, where the pale had once been, still nothing there...

Meanwhile, Cnossos nodded. “I’m sure you’ll fit right in, Auria.”

The look on Auria's face went to confusion for a brief moment before returning to normal, and although she looked as though she might be about to say something she decided against it. Although it seemed her words had been taken differently than what she had intended, the end result was still essentially the same. There had never been any intention to dodge responsibility, and it was not something she would ever do.

And so, due to that fact, she simply responded with, “
Of course I won’t.
” This was added to by Rhamnusia, the hologram appearing again with a few extra flickers, with, “
Yeah, I hear. Don’t worry, I’m not going to blow up your ship.
” before disappearing again.

In the end, the result was what they had come for, even if it had not happened at all in the way that either of them had expected. There was still the small matters of staying away from the crew members that didn’t exactly like them…but hopefully that wasn’t going to be an eternal struggle.

As they started returning to the ship, the giant lizard spoke, repeating the affirmation that he had seemingly come to earlier. Although it was definitely meant as encouragement, Auria’s response was a bit strange, and had just the slightest tinge of sadness in it that seemed to extend far beyond the current situation.

That’ll be something new, then.

Jaeden turned away from everyone, raising her left arm to type at her wrist computer. A holographic screen flickers up in a soft purple, writing rolling down it as if it were on a vertical conveyer belt. Her eyes shift from left to right, reading the message rolling on by. Her expression turned stony, before she nodded sharply to herself. Switching the screen off, she lowered her arms and stared in the direction of the cantina before pursing her lips.

"Alright, I'm heading back to the ship. You lot can linger a bit longer if you want - just don't take too long. We'll be looking to receive those orders and then heading out in the morning,
she announced before turning and heading off in the direction of the docking area - where the Autumn Star sat in waiting.

In times long past, the Autumn Star was a shiny sleek design that was recognised wherever it flew. Mostly black and grey with orange markings, its name written along the side alongside the icon of a star on fire, it was a beauty to see. Or well...It was once. Now it was dirty and covered in surface damage. With the life they now led, Jaeden and the crew could not afford to keep up appearances. If it wasn't required to keep the ship one hundred percent, they went without. It explained why it was hard to recognise it these days.

Jaeden slid through the gates leading into the docking area, heading for the bay that held the ship. She glanced over the ship with a frown, sighing outwardly. All it did was build her resentment at being treated the way they had been. Heroes to criminals. Why bother saving a galaxy that wasn't grateful?
