The Black Knight

"Hey, you there! Stop!"

What on earth this guardsman had been doing whilst his friends were chopped to pieces or tossed off of battlements is a quandary that only the philosophers may be able to answer. All that is known that here he was, sat alone in the room that Brodus had just abruptly entered. Perhaps his previous inability to understand the signs of an air elemental being awakened was to be put down to sheer ineptitude, for he had left his scabbard on a wall on the opposite side of the room and could do little more than gape at the knight as he ascended the stairs with a speed which defied his age- though certainly this incompetent defender would soon be on the pursuit.

The room that Brodus eventually entered, highest of the tower, was clearly that which the elemental had been previously sealed in. A containment ring had been etched onto the floor in runic scripture, though it had now turned a dull, ashen black- clearly, it was a trap that was not meant to be easily reset, as the magic had gone out of it entirely. Vertically above this seal was the opened trapdoor, and otherwise the room had been used as storage, seeing as its only occupant was usually preoccupied with its own magical enslavement. Scrolls, dented pieces of armour, a few carrier pigeons, a key to the town's undersewers, a ladder for the trapdoor, along with casks that smelt of ale and boxes that from an outward glance appeared to contain some extremely boring paperwork.

Besides from this, the room offered little help. It didn't even have windows- perhaps air elementals were susceptible to high winds? At any rate, the scrambling on the stairs hinted at the reappearance of the guard, whilst the air elemental was nowhere to be seen. Had it followed him inside the tower, or did it remain waiting directly above him, waiting for its time to attack?

The Pyromistress

Ki*a's original repulsion from the absurdly well-defended town notwithstanding, the fire magician managed to make a magnificent entrance inside the walls, landing without notice and with little cause for suspicion. Indeed, not many were looking to the skies for intruders, and with the ferocious cloud cover being provided by the sorcery of the hag sisters, the blackness of night blunted the senses.

With the precision one might expect from someone skilled in the art of flame-assisted flight, Kira had managed to land particularly close to her destination. The town's centre, (if a town it could even be called- given its security measures,) was marked by a pompously large statue of some previous lord, duke or princeling, who was supposedly important in this place's history. However, now it seemed only important for catching the defecating of passing birdlife. Tonight, and for many nights before since Soahc's most recent rampage began, the statue served another purpose though- as a fortified outpost of reserve guardsmen.

Being at the dead centre, the logic would follow that they were in the best position to reinforce any of the towers should they come under attack. The presence of the guards- some twenty of them- seemed to indicate that the alarms triggered at the castle walls had yet to reach the inner forces. Whether they'd go as one full unit to the first tower to call for back-up or whether they'd split into small teams to target each tower when summoned was unknown, as they stood around in no discernible formation that would hint at a separation of units. And whether they would ever get the summons to leave at all was another matter entirely- dependent entirely on the competence of Kira's teammates.

Which meant the way to go forward was entirely in Kira's hands- to wait and see, to take matters into her own fiery hands, or to use this opportunity to explore the area before returning to the centre. After all, the statue was situated a mere twenty feet away from the front door of the keep, which could prove interesting to explore- or else hazardous in providing backup for those already posted outside.

The Assassin

With a swiftness and stealth that marked his trade, Sileo Umbra quickly vanished into the night. Behind him the shouting of the guards could be heard, but their wall-scaling abilities were lacklustre in comparison to the master infiltrator that they intended on pursuing. It was certain that it would not be long before the rest of the town was made aware of their presence though, between the explosion and the infuriating calls of the guards in the night.

Armoured men patrolled the streets, a cut above the guards on the towers by the looks of them, but lacking the details that would imply them to be fully-fledged knights of the faith. Most walked in pairs, or else accompanied by a wand-carrying mage, flanked by pulsing orbs which skulked down alleyways and intruded into windows in search for anyone who would dare to break curfew.

Giving the time of day and the artificial cloud-cover summoned by the hags, Sileo was in no position to discern any distinguishing features of the town as a whole to use as an indicator of where he should be heading, except that some of the roads were on a steady upward inclination- the starting of a hill. Though of course, to traverse anywhere would involve the necessity of flouting the searching probes of the guards, both physical and magical.

The Hive

Cold Ethyl's expression was one of shrewd distrust at the oncoming swarm, which gave away to scientific curiosity when it became apparent what it was. A horde of insects held together by arcane magic, or else divine will! She licked her blistered and blighted lips in anticipation, eyes roving over the specimen before her. Hags practised magic of a particular sort- illusions, potions, these were their speciality. But they also delved into the dark, into the brands of magic most would find unnatural. Not necromancy- for hags care little for their contemporaries and not at all for their ascendants, but the kind of perversity that this creature clearly showed.

The outer swarm buzzed around the inner core- a corpse of some sorts, perhaps? It certainly wielded a sword, intimidatingly, as though it would seem it wise to strike out at her. Did this thing not realise what it had come across? What power Ethyl held at her fingertips? Of her coven she was one of the eldest and greatest, so great that she could lead a splinter faction away from the Great Mother- in herself a sorceress so powerful that she sought to court the Father. And soon Ethyl would have power beyond imagining- Soahc would see to that, either by holding up his end of the bargain, or by being seized in whatever betrayal attempts he may try.

Ethyl had come too far, had done too much, to be stopped by some mere bugs.

Understanding that the swarm was not going to stop in its advancement- that it would actually be so foolish as to propose a strike against her, Ethyl decided to incapacitate her target with swift efficiency. Preferably without destroying its core, for she felt encouraged to study it and learn its secrets, and in learning those secrets replicate its form in verbatim.

Chanting, raising her arms to spellcast, Ethyl forged in arcane tongue a blistering mist, which, congealing and contorting fashioned itself into a blizzard writ small, obscuring her from the vision of the hive (if it indeed had vision in the commonly known sense,) but also creating an atmosphere that would, with any luck, freeze whatever insects dared to trespass into its domain.

Encampment of the Empire

Alania Clarke opened her mouth to interject, interlocked eyebrows indicating her annoyance at Alicia's position on the matter. But as the other girl spoke, the aggressive features began to slacken, and something close to dawning comprehension replaced it. She said nothing for a long time, and eventually mustered up an, "Oh," before she composed herself fully.

"Yes, you're right, we shouldn't rush into things," Alania said, though somewhat puzzled by her own words. Didn't knights always rush headlong into danger, throwing caution to the wind and saving the day just in the nick of time? Alania couldn't remember any stories about heroes deliberating over various factions for several days...

It was Henry that put her back on track, with the suggestion that they still accompany the legionnaires in order to find out what they can. Yes, this sounded like the action she craved! "I think Henry's right," she whispered back to the rest. "We're not going to solve this by keeping away from the heart of it. It sounds like we're near the front lines, we can't miss an opportunity like this."

Karstone, however, had turned out of that conversation and was instead focusing in on the field report being given by one of the hired grunts- quite a sight, he would add.

"Aye, *'was bleeding," Karstone agreed, stroking his beard thoughtfully. "Bu' Ah reckon it don't need blood like you or me. A beast o' a diff'rent sort, this is."

Decan Martha glanced sideways disapprovingly of Karstone's unwanted intervention, then turned back to Kat and nodded at her once. "Military advancement in ogre culture happens primarily at night, and dusk is upon us. At first light we'll strike out for the dread beast. If it's wounded it won't travel far. If it isn't, it's probably more advantageous for us to give it a head start. Tyrrus be merciful, the demon might even come upon our enemy."

Karstone somehow doubted that, but held his tongue. He'd had enough experience with demons to know nothing went to plan when dealing with them. He just hoped this one was an entity unrelated to that which preceded it, or else all Hell would quite literally break loose.

Above the Bowels of the Earth

A man sat above a hole in the ground, a hole of his own creation. Well, not his . He was just a vessel, an item of clothing to be worn whilst the Mission was taking place. He was Rickard Herring, and the intermingling of the memories of the host and the parasite granted the body-wearer that insight. The parasite had travelled north as a merchant, but swapped hosts when reaching the big building, (The Plucky Hecatonchire, Rickard's memories whispered to the parasite,) needing a more local and less questionable disguise.

The merchant body had been preferable, it came with thin cylinders of gold that could be exchanged for men, men who would do what the parasite wanted. They helped dig the hole, and went down with the merchant into the depths, though they didn't last long. Hosts without a parasite were weak, and these men were weaker still- swayed by greed. The parasite was not easily swayable though, it was loyal, yes, loyal to the one who had sent it- loyal to the one at the end of all things.

The parasite had been given a mission, yes. And he would not forget his mission. He was not Acoxyle the Dreaded, he was not made to suffer vanity. So with the humans dead he continued his descent. The beasts that lied below were from before, long before anything that the parasite had ever known. Janus had plucked out monsters from before the dawn of man and made them his thralls. The parasite's master had sent them back in time, his most loyal lieutenants, but knew that some of them would be found, like the parasite's comrade down below. Janus had waited thousands of years for humanity to arise, and then employed them to build this tomb to seal away the parasite's brother.

But all tombs can be broken.

He could feel it now, yes. The blood-demon had descended past the gates that the parasite had smashed open, and even the parasite did not know what lied beyond that. But he could feel the pulsating, the calling, the longing of the one sealed inside. His mission was done, and he would need to leave. Facing the reptiles down below had ruined the merchant's body, and had prompted the parasite to switch hosts. The parasite did not want to wait around and see what the blood-demon would make of the body of Rickard Herring. The boy with the magical abilities had escaped, but fate had handed him a demon of the likes of which the parasite had only witnessed once, in a time now forgotten to all. He was too weak to face such a foe as the blood-demon, he would flee, he would skulk and hide and find a new body, but until then he would hide and hide well.

Not that the hiding mattered- for he had been released, and soon the world would drink its own blood and despair.

Bowels of the Earth

Through the miraculous ingenuity of his artificially created and magically augmented form, Spirry had bested his foes in a blood-filled brawl, and was now advancing upon the mega-structure which dwarfed everything in this subterranean chamber. It seemed that the world was conspiring to stop the Newborn, to halt it in its path, but the containment field was built in mind for much more fickler foes than this behemoth, this rebirthing of a demonking, this great sorcerer whose existence had long been lost to history.

Blood turning to steam, muscles melting down in streams, with the weight of the world against him, Spirry still managed to reach the orb, to place his withered hand upon it and in doing so transfer some energy into it.

A single crack appeared upon the surface.

The glow, that mystical glow which had made it so enthralling, was rapidly depleting to darkness, and in that darkness the cracks grew and multiplied and joined and splintered, pitch-black snake trails racing across the surface of the egg. The darkness in the room seemed to be retreating, only to be replaced by a greater shadow, a shadow which was emerging from aeons of being sealed away, locked beneath the earth to be forgotten forevermore, freed in the most miraculous manner.

A great leg stretched out from within the egg, and pierced the ground like lightning. It was followed by another, and another, until eight great, hulking towers spread out from the centre, and rising from the depths of the tomb raised the hulking beast. It was a spider in simplest terms, though the greatest spider that ever lived- perhaps the first, perhaps the forefather of those horrors which lurk in the darkest of corners, the reason why humans have such an unnatural fear of its descendants- for they are a reminder of this, this which had been revealed, this which had been returned to the earth in its fullest.

With seven eyes it saw, and those eyes took in its unwitting rescuer. The arachnid's mandibles moved, perhaps in place of a mouth, for it was certain that this creature could not speak- but it was powerful, and through its power could it communicate directly to Spirry, now that it was freed from its containment.

I am freed. You are New and I am Old. Together we make the world Black. Together we bring the night. Together, we shall kill gods.

((As always, I apologise profusely for the delay. I hope you all can forgive me! Or at least, failing that, begrudgingly continue on with this quest whilst secretly wishing me nothing but misery in my life!

I'm incredibly sleep deprived so I might have written utter twaddle- if that's the case then tomorrow I will post extra to get things moving again. The birds featured in posts directed at Annie/Siera and Zed/Judy are ones sent by Conleth, as detailed in Sir Duncan's last post in the first paragraph.

Quicksilver, I will indeed add you to the character list!

Happy roleplaying x))

Kuro

"Thanks that horse means a lot to me.", Kuro said with appreciation for the knowledge his horse is alright and nearby. Although he did notice the tone in the hags voice he couldn't help but feel bad about being just a burden on the group.

Kuro looked around the room to see who was still around, Kuro realized he doesn't know how long he was out for. Which that actually concerns him a bit. Kuro was going to ask but he didn't think reminding everyone he was out while everyone was still moving around awake and working.

"So what have I missed, anyone want to catch me up?" Kuro asks not knowing what is going on at the moment he remembers the original mission and what knocked him out, but nothing that he missed why being unconscious
and nothing was spoiled :P
