For a moment, flames fluttered around the machine-skeletoned devil. Had his plot for revenge approached his desires?

He crossed his arms, breathing like a furnace. The chaotic agony of a God...forever twisted within an eternity of endless machines? There is no greater prize.
Soahc’s cheerful laugh irritated Mechanical. What a blasphemous noise!

Yet, knowing what his other half was thinking--the half that retained what was truly his living side that also contained whatever fragment of a soul--behaved without reason, without logic, without purpose. But what the Newborn did indeed do, was get the surfacing of the Eight-Legged One going.

A city of machines, molten rock flowing through its pipes like necessary waste through a colon... “That will contain the chaos, replaced by the Playroom...an engine to pain, a single contraption...” Big enough for even a giant deity.

With a flap of his wings, Mechanical took flight, following the ascent of cages as their leader grew to huge proportions.

Mechanical overlooked the flying city. “Ornithonas...an arrow fletched by your own feathers to take you down.” He dove, intending to ram his entire frame while billowing embers, a continuously moving foe fond of grappling.

Yet, something gnawed his consciousness. “Firstborn, where are you!? I know your thoughts, but I cannot see you!?” As he brawled through avian defenders, many feathers ignited as he tore his victims apart with mechanical force. He howled, smoke billowing from his maw.

Mechanical furiously ripped apart pipework, snapping through walls, breaking anything and everything in his way. “I will rip apart this city... Pipe by pipe if I have to, even if I have to destroy the Heartforge! But I will find you...”

Siera Nilifen

Although she was listening to the conversations that were happening as they approached their way into the city, the azure-haired musician was focused on only two things: the destination of their journey and the fact that she was far less in shape than everyone else here. While she was managing to keep up with everyone else, it was with considerable effort, and only the thought that she was close, so close, to her goal kept her going. Too much time had been spent chasing after the trail left by the demigod of chaos, and she refused to let him get away again.

Her journey to get here had been too long. She was tired, tired of everything that had come to stand in her path, tired of the fact that she couldn’t simply have a life that was anywhere close to normal. No matter where she went, it seemed that the world was trying to pull her into everything, and the maddening echoes in her head of a song from a dying world refused to allow her any peace. Rivers of lava, hidden passages to cities built on mountaintops…none of that was what she wanted, not anymore. It all led to death, despair, and destruction, and she had seen enough of it.

As if sensing that she was thinking like this again, both of her companions - a flute that, despite everything, somehow was still flying alongside her, and a puppy, now grown into a rather large dog - nudged her forward, breaking her from her thoughts and reminding her that she was still in a test of endurance that she was most certainly not winning. She came back just in time to hear the exchange about the power of gods coming down, and it just made her sigh. Her people did not have such beings, and given what she had seen during her time in this world, it was for the better. Every problem that she had been drawn into had been due to some action by a deity, and now it appeared that the world was on the brink of destruction because of them.

Why was one being allowed to dictate a world’s fate in such terms?

It was wrong.

Yet she did not raise her views, for who would have time to read a written word during a run through caves? Her voice had not yet found its way back, and as such she was still confined to her writing as a means of communication. It was likely just as well, for most inhabitants of this world held the gods in high regard. Her more unique views weren’t ones that would be received well most of the time, and in the end there was no purpose to sharing them with others anyways.

Finally, after what felt like hours, they reached the lift, and she slumped to the platform as it began rising at ridiculous speeds. For a minute, she focused simply on breathing, regaining her energy and getting into a fit state for what she knew would be a battle. Her breath was her only weapon, and without the ability to transpose it into a state that could produce music she would be unable to do anything once they reached the top.

Once she could do elsewise, she looked around, and from seeing all the others on this lift one thing was clear to her: she didn’t belong with them. They were, or at least appeared to be, all here because they wanted to stop what was happening. Whether that was due to adherence to a deity or simply by virtue of a hero, their goal was to bring the demigod up above to a halt and reduce him, and his plans, back into nothing.

She didn’t care. Although under no illusions that she would not have to take part in what was going on up above, if she could accomplish what she was here for without it she was fairly certain she would do so. One thing had brought her this far, and the only thing it had in common with everyone else here was that it involved Soahc. The only person she truly cared about was here - had to be here - and if she had to tear this entire city apart to get him back then she would without hesitation.

It wasn’t fair, and she was sick of playing by everyone else’s rules.

As the lift rose, the air thinned, and it was with significantly more difficulty that she drew breath by the time they reached the top. It felt strange; not once had she felt like this since coming to this world, despite the fact that she should have been able to traverse areas like this at will. Her lost wings, although hardly forgotten, had just been something that she had accepted by now. It still hurt from time to time, both physically and mentally, and the life that had been starting to make it easier was barely hanging on.

Taking a slightly labored breath - the altitude in conjunction with her already-tired lungs made it much harder than usual - she reached out momentarily, although almost immediately changed her mind, waving off the incoming flute and pulling out her small harp instead. Breath was too much of a limitation now, whereas her hands were in much better condition.

Her fingers gently caressing the strings before they even stepped out of the building, the music wafted through the air, winding its way out into the streets in anticipation of the purveyor. The tune was slow, but determined; a march to carry her forward, a reminder of what had come before that had led to this while holding back what nearly made that journey insurmountable.

As the wall rose, revealing the terror and chaos outside, Siera took one last deep breath and began to walk forward.

There was nowhere to turn back to.

This would end, one way or the other.

Kira Vesteros

My dear Soahc, I have very little interest in personally granting perfection to every soul when it can all be done at once.
” the crimson-clad priestess of flames purred in response to the demigod’s words. “
Those that truly desire it may come and find me, but I shall not seek them today.

The journey to this place had been easy; almost too easy. Flame and ash were all that they left in their wake, but there had been very little that had actually been of any concern to her. In fact, those that she traveled with were far more dangerous, and much more of a threat to her final goal than anyone they had faced thus far. Nobody here wanted the same thing, but Kira did not intend to be one of those who did not get what they desired. At this point, they couldn’t stop her anyways.

While the others spread out to carry out the chaos and destruction necessary for their advance, Kira remained near the demigod, not even batting an eye as he grew in size and blasted the gates back into the city. It was laughable, really. There was absolutely no resistance from any of the so-called defenders, and the forces under Soahc’s command needed to do nothing more than simply walk in the front door. A force waited for them beyond, but if they could not stop them from breaking through the gates she did not expect they would be able to hold them back.

Although there were a few more tricks she could pull, for now she remained inactive, waiting. If heroes were going to show, perhaps that might be interesting, but there was no reason yet to become involved in the combat.

Kat

It had been a long trip from the ogrelands to the city atop the mountain, and Kat had been faced with plenty of time to think. And in thinking, she had come to the conclusion that she was more lost now than she ever had been. It was ironic; the identity split that she had been trying to come to terms with before everything had happened was now the least of her concern. The two halves seemed to have taken what had occurred and used it as a means with which they could come together, agreeing on something so that they were on longer attempting to pull her apart from the inside.

Her anger at the betrayal and continuing existence of the abomination that they had come across had long since tempered, but it had not faded. What she had seen was terrifying, a possible destruction to everything on this world, and yet Alania had seen fit to allow it to survive. It made no sense, and knowing that she could have ended it was a painful thing to be aware of.

It was because of the abomination that they knew what they needed to do, although the knowledge granted by the visions it had granted the Big Fat were just as disturbing as the thing itself. It was a part of a different whole, and there was more than just it in this world. That the two parts were at odds was better than them being in unison, but the realization that the other part was aligned with the demigod of chaos threw everything into disarray. They had known they would need to stop this before, but now they knew the gravity of the situation. The world wouldn’t be able to continue its existence if whatever was happening was allowed to complete.

But now that they were up here, what could they even do? They weren’t numerous enough to deal with an army, they weren’t strong enough to kill a god, and they weren’t knowledgeable enough to even understand what the goal of their enemy truly was.

Kat didn’t want to think; thinking about things like this made them feel impossible. Part of her wished that she could return to the days when she had been nothing more than a helmsman on a sailing ship, getting drunk and getting into brawls at every port they had come across. With that, and the tenets of her faith guiding her, there had been very little question about what to do.

Now, though, she was stuck in a conflict that was far beyond her, and while the side she gained on that unknown island in the middle of nowhere was screaming at her to run from this enemy, the faith that she had held for so long had convinced her that she could not do such a thing. If her presence would make a difference, then it was no different whether she died here or was destroyed in the world’s destruction that would surely follow success by evil.

And so, as the sounds of the gate crashing down came from outside, Kat rose to her feet, a steady hand grasping at her pistol while a shaky one took hold of her spear, stepping out to take her place next to Martha. If this was going to be the end of all things, so be it, but she would not consign herself to sitting back and letting it happen.
